FLOTTANTE
EXPRESSION1 FIBER ARTS Expression Fiber Arts
-Flottante-
I love getting in our RV and traveling to new places. The places we’ve seen and the experiences we’ve had will stay
with me forever. I keep the memories in my numerous journals and in the items I knit and crochet. The asymmetrical
shawl Flottante (a French word for “ oating”) was inspired by a trip to Yosemite. Our camping spot was along the
Tuolumne River. I loved sitting at the river’s edge, watching the water as it made its way over rocks and logs
(represented by the stripes and garter stitches), and at times, owing free (represented by lace stitches in the Waves
section), and nally, rippling against the river’s edge. This shawl, not only asymmetrical in shape, but also in design, is
made with knit and purl stitches, along with typical stitches used in lace stitches. Lace weight yarn was used to keep
this shawl light and airy. I hope you enjoy making this shawl and sharing a little bit of my travels with me.

NOTES

• The sample shown used approximately 800 yds/732 m total: Color A: 520 yds/475 m and Color
B: 280 yds/256 m.
• Gauge is not crucial but can affect yardage use and dimensions.
• The sample carried both colors up the side to eliminate weaving in multiple ends.
• The size can be increased by following the established pattern in the last Ripples section.
• Each right side row will include an increase.
• Some lines include stitch counts for multiple rows, as these rows will be repeated. For example,
Row 5 under Waves, shows (R5:66, R29:78 sts). After completing Row 5, you will have 66 stitches.
On Row 27, you will start repeating the pattern beginning at Row 3. When you repeat Row 5, you
will be on Row 29 and will have 78 stitches.
• It is strongly recommended that you use lifelines, as it is easy to drop or lose a stitch when
working with lace weight yarn.
• Place a removable stitch marker to indicate right side (RS) of work.
• Place markers every 50 stitches for quick counting and to make sure your stitch count is correct.
• Click here to watch a tutorial on how to work some of the special stitches found in this pattern.
