Over the course of time, life as a teenager has changed abundantly. How
teenagers lived back then is incomparable to how they live now. In today’s
generation, being a teenager is anything but easy. Or at least that’s how I
feel. The growth from childhood to adulthood is effortless for some, but
difficult for others. There’s many challenges to face, decisions to make, and
roads to take set out for all of us. Based on our preparation for these
moments, we’ll know just how “ready” we are to take on life.

The hardest part of being a teenager now feels stuck. Stuck between what
responsibilities are yours to handle. You’re no longer a child but you’re not
officially an adult yet either. This can be the biggest struggle we all come
across. It gets very frustrating trying to live up to so many expectations from
your friends, family members, and sometimes their friends too. We’re stuck in
this stage in life where we’re expected to be responsible young adults yet
we’re not permitted to do just as much as adults can. It’s hard being
expected to act as an adult, but all adults see in you is a child just trying to be
someone they can’t be just yet.

14
I myself struggle with getting things
done when it’s needed. At times this
gets me in a lot of trouble. Many
adults automatically expect us to do
things exactly how they want us to
and expect us to act just as they did,
but they don’t understand that we
were raised differently. Times have
changed compared to 30 years
ago when our parents were
teenagers. Back then, technology
wasn’t as convenient so they had
more time away from phones,
laptops and TVs. They interacted
face to face more and were always
busy whether inside or outside of the
house. Nowadays we are glued to
our gadgets. Face to face
interaction has been compromised
over text or video calling straight
from your phone. Losing this really
took a toll on our generation.

The best part of being a teenager is being able to find things at the click of a
button. With the advancement of technology, today’s generation doesn’t
struggle as much as they did 30 years ago. The new technology has become
such a great investment and factor in our lives. Compared to the past,
teenagers nowadays are closer than ever. Teenagers now can easily reach
each other at the click of a button. Along with the advancement of
technology came a faster more efficient access to knowledge. Although there
are still many struggles of being a teenager now, the superlatives of the
present triumph it all.

TEENAGERS AND
COMMUNICATION
Issues that can affect communication with teenagers:
Adolescence is a time of rapid change, not just for the young person but for
the parents too. It might be hard to let go sometimes, but parents need to
recognise that:
A child’s job is to grow up and become an independent adult. As a
parent, you need to help young people through this process.
Decisions can now be made together. Try to discuss issues to reach an
outcome that you and your teenager can both accept.
Young people may have viewpoints that are different from yours or may
take up activities that you don’t understand. Try to see this as good thing.
They are learning to be their own person
You will always feel responsible for your child’s wellbeing and safety, no
matter how old they are. When children reach their teenage years, they
start to make their own decisions. Sometimes they make the wrong ones.
Try to be supportive and not criticise. They will (hopefully!) learn valuable
lessons from their mistakes..
During this time of constant change, both parents and young people
need to take time to care for themselves.
You need to show you value your teenager and their uniqueness – show
them your unconditional love.

21
General communication tips with teenagers:
The most important thing is to keep the lines of communication open.
Suggestions include:
Listen more than you speak – remember that we are all given two ears
and one mouth. This is to remind us that we should spend twice as much
time listening as talking. This is especially important when talking to
teenagers, who may tell us more if we are silent long enough to give them
the opportunity.
Make time to spend together – teenagers are often busy with school,
friends and other interests, but you can have a conversation with them over
breakfast and dinner. Offer to take them to or pick them up from places;
this will provide other opportunities for conversations.
Give them privacy – teenagers need their own space. For example, knock
before you go into their room.

22
Keep up with their interests –
listen to their music, watch their
television shows with them and
turn up to their sports practise
sessions. Continue to take an
active interest in their life.
Be a loving parent –
adolescence is a time when
young people often struggle with
their changing sense of identity
and need to feel loved. Tell them
often. Demonstrate your love
using whatever physical contact
they are comfortable with.
Celebrate their achievements,
forgive their mistakes, listen to
them when they have a problem
and show interest in how they
plan to solve it. Support them in
their problem solving. Feeling
included and special is vital for
every young person’s sense of
positive self-esteem.
Have fun – make time for leisure
and laughter. Good feelings help
to build good rapport.

THE GENUINE
IMPORTANCE OF
HAPPINESS IN
YOUR CAREER
The Truth About Your Job
Finding career satisfaction is one of the most important factors in choosing a
job. This is especially true with Millennials, and with more people from this
generation entering the workforce, someone might already be filling the
position of your dream job. So how do you solve this? Looking for a backup
plan sounds good and all, but is it really worth it when you know you like
something else? Research shows that you are not alone in this dilemma.
Around 61% of employees feel they have been misled during job interviews
and about how working for a company would be like. If you are one of these
people, the truth is, you might have set your expectations too high. No job is
going to be all fun and games. There will always be stressful situations that
are sure to make you feel like quitting, but if you’re looking for happiness in
your career, days like these are something that you have to go through.

Your Passion: Should You Pursue It as a Career?

To some people, working at least 40 hours a week doing their job means
spending more time at work than at home. If this is the case for about a
million other people in the world, would you want to spend this much time on
a career you hate or would you spend it doing something you love?
Nowadays, career happiness is often associated with pursuing your passion.
In fact, it’s easy to actually think this way due to the many benefits of
choosing a career you love.

40
The idea of never feeling like working, having a fun and easy job, and
experiencing lower stress levels is very enticing to anyone. However, unknown
to a lot of people, pursuing your passion does not always turn out how you
think it would be. There are a variety of problems with pursuing your passion.
One of these is the fact that most people’s passions do not fit the job market.
This means that though you may be passionate about sports, music, or art,
there are only a handful of jobs in these industries which make job hunting,
let alone career growth, very difficult.of purpose while letting you expand
your skill set and providing proper feedback.

What It Takes to Be Happy with Your Career

Many studies have revealed that the most consistent factor for career
happiness is having an engaging work. Different jobs have different features
and research has shown that it is these features that actually determine
career satisfaction.
One of these determinants is independence. Most people, particularly
Millennials, prefer to have control over their jobs to a certain extent. Things
like the manner of carrying out a task and when to do a job are some of the
things that people like to maintain control of.
Another factor is having a sense of completion feeling involved in a company
is something that a lot of people are looking for. Though you may not admit
it, everyone likes to feel like they are part of a team and see that they make a
difference in the company. This is where career growth and corporate
culture come into play. Corporate culture affects career growth by instilling a
sense of purpose
