INTRODUCTION TO THE SELECTED TOPIC
Our world today is constantly changing, and learning English is more important than ever.
One of the best ways to improve English skills is through reading, as it helps us understand
new ideas and connect with different cultures. This Reading Portfolio focuses on two
important and interesting topics: Health and Culture. Health is a topic that affects everyone.
In modern life, staying healthy is not just about eating well and exercising, but also about
understanding how to take care of both our bodies and minds. Through reading passages
about health, learners will explore topics like healthy habits, mental well-being, medical
advancements, and common health challenges. These texts will not only improve reading
skills but also give practical knowledge to make better lifestyle choices.
On the other hand, Culture is what makes each community unique and special. It includes
traditions, beliefs, customs, and ways of life that shape how people think and behave.
Learning about culture helps us become more open-minded and respectful of differences. In
this portfolio, readers will discover a variety of cultural stories and practices from around the
world. From traditional festivals to modern cultural changes, these texts offer a deeper look
into how people express their identities and values.
By focusing on Health and Culture, this portfolio encourages learners to think about
important issues that affect their daily lives and the world around them. The carefully chosen
reading passages help develop language skills while also building knowledge and awareness
of these essential topics.
We hope that this portfolio will not only help improve reading comprehension but also
inspire curiosity and a desire to learn more about health and cultural diversity. Enjoy
exploring these meaningful and thought-provoking topics as you practice your English
reading skills!

for recording thoughts in a journal.
B. reading - Incorrect. "Reading down" is not a valid phrase in
this context.
C. recording - Incorrect. "Recording down" is incorrect;
"recording" is used for audio/video, not writing in a journal.
D. telling - Incorrect. "Telling down" is not a correct phrase.
A. defend - Incorrect. While "defend" means to protect against
an attack, it is more commonly used in a military, legal, or
competitive context (e.g., "defend your country," "defend your
title in a competition"). It does not fit well when talking about
mental health and stress.
B. destroy - Incorrect. "Destroy" means to completely ruin or
break something, which is the opposite of the meaning needed
in this sentence.
5 C. protect C. protect - Correct. "Protect against" means to keep someone or
something safe from harm, which is the best fit here. Good
social support helps "protect" a person from the negative effects
of stress. This is the most natural and commonly used phrase in
English.
D. decrease - Incorrect. "Decrease" means to make something
smaller or reduce it. While social support may help reduce
stress, we do not say "decrease you against stress." The verb
"protect" fits the sentence structure better.
A. interacted - Incorrect. "Get interacted" is grammatically
incorrect. "Interact with" is the correct structure.
B. involved - Correct. "Get involved with" means to participate
actively in something, which fits the context.
6 B. involved C. interested - Incorrect. "Get interested with" is incorrect;
"interested in" is the correct phrase.
D. inspired - Incorrect. "Get inspired with" does not fit the
sentence structure or meaning.
27
B. solve - Incorrect. "Solve with" is incorrect. Stressful
situations are not always "solved"; they must be handled.
C. face - Incorrect. "Face with" is incorrect; "face" is used alone
(e.g., "face challenges").
D. deal - Correct. "Deal with" is the standard phrase for
handling stressful situations. Structure: "Deal with something"
(to manage a situation or problem)

phrases with meaning and a related example
.
Thank you, teenage first aiders!
When 12-year-old Donovan Stuart had an accident, his friends showed what they had
learned at his school's first aid training. The boys were playing outside when Donovan
suddenly slipped on a stone and fell down a hill. He was lying on the ground when one of his
friends found him. His leg hurt terribly. Luckily, the boys had done a first aid training course
at their school just two weeks before, so they knew exactly what to do.
Donovan remembers "One of my friends called the ambulance, my friend Steve called my
parents with my mobile, and Joe took his T-Shirt and put it round my knee. He talked to me
all the time and told me that everything was going to be alright." Of course my knee still hurt
terribly, but because Joe kept talking to me, I didn't feel so bad. And I nearly forgot about my
knee and my leg."
Adam Johnson, the first aid officer who trained the children at Southend School two weeks
ago, is really happy "It's fantastic that they did everything just right. They didn't panic. They
called the ambulance right away, helped Donovan and what is most important, they talked to
him so that Donovan didn't panic. In our courses, we even do exercises on how to call the
ambulance and what to say. Now they have practised everything in a real situation. It will
make the students prepared for more dangerous situations that can happen in life. This all
shows that the work we do is important. That's fantastic!"
Frank Simon, principal of Southend School, is happy to see that they are doing the right
things at the school. "We started the first aid training only two years ago, but as you can see
it's a success already. Everybody should be able to help if there's an accident. Our first aid
training courses with professional trainers are the first step for our students. They know
about first aid, they know that they can help and I'm sure they will learn more about first aid
in later life."
Donovan had to go to the hospital for a few days but is at home again now. His leg is broken
but everything will be fine again in a few weeks. "I want to thank my friends. They helped
me in a very dangerous situation. I will do more first aid courses when I'm older, that's for
sure. And I want to ask our principal if we can start a first aid club at our school."
We are sure that the principal will listen carefully to Donovan's ideas because students have
great ideas. And there is more good news: Donovan has a 20-year-old cousin. His cousin is
going to be a doctor, and he wants to help out if there is a club. So we hope that there will
soon be a first aid club at Southend School. If there is, we'll report about it.

1 C The story clearly states that Donovan slipped on a stone and fell
down a hill while playing outside. The exact sentence is: “The boys
were playing outside when Donovan suddenly slipped on a stone and
fell down a hill.”
This tells us that the cause of the accident was slipping on a stone, so
the correct answer is C.
2 D The story mentions: “Luckily, the boys had done a first aid training
course at their school just two weeks before...”
This means the first aid training took place two weeks before the
accident, making D the correct answer.
33
3 B Steve was the one who used Donovan’s mobile phone to call his
parents. The text states: “Steve called my parents with my mobile...”
This clearly indicates that B is the correct answer.
4 B Joe used his T-shirt to wrap around Donovan’s injured knee to stop
the bleeding. The text specifically says:“Joe took his T-Shirt and put
it round my knee.”
This shows that Joe used his shirt as a makeshift bandage, making B
the correct answer.
5 C
Although bandaging the knee was important, the most crucial thing
Joe did was keeping Donovan calm by talking to him continuously.
The first aid trainer also emphasized that calming the injured person
is essential in such situations to prevent panic: “...and what is most
important, they talked to him so that Donovan didn't panic.”
Therefore, the correct answer is C.
6 Adam Johnson, the first aid trainer, expressed his happiness because
A the students did not panic and applied their training correctly. He
said: “They didn’t panic. They called the ambulance right away,
helped Donovan and what is most important - they talked to him...”
This demonstrates that they effectively applied their knowledge from
the training, making A the correct answer.
7 A The first aid training at the school included practicing how to call an
ambulance and knowing what to say: “In our courses, we even do
exercises on how to call the ambulance and what to say.”
This shows that practicing communication during emergencies was
part of the training, so the correct answer is A.
8 D The principal, Frank Simon, explained that the main goal of first aid
training was to prepare students to help in emergencies: “Everybody
should be able to help if there's an accident.”
This clearly shows that the purpose of the training is to prepare
students for emergencies, making D the correct answer.
34
9 B After his accident, Donovan expressed his desire to establish a first
aid club at his school: “I want to ask our principal if we can start a
first aid club at our school.”
This shows that Donovan wants to start a first aid club, making B the
correct answer.

Healthy lifestyle
Healthy lifestyle is the need of the hour. While it came easy to the earlier generations these
days people find it hard to follow owing to the fast-paced life. People are working hard,
partying harder and doing everything apart from taking care of their health. It is time we
must take our health seriously. A few healthy habits can help you develop a healthy lifestyle
over a period of time. Healthy habits that must be followed:
Follow a healthy diet plan. Following a healthy diet plan is of utmost importance when you
are trying to live a healthy life. Begin by following a healthy diet plan that includes all the
essential micronutrients and steer clear of junk food.
Wake up early. Most people are unable to indulge in exercise, have breakfast and spend few
quality moments with their loved ones in the morning because they do not wake up on time.
Make it a habit to wake up early each morning so that you have enough time to
accommodate all these tasks.
Exercise. Squeeze in at least half an hour each day to indulge in physical exercise of your
choice. You can choose to go for a walk, swim, practice yoga, deep breathing or do anything
that interests you. This helps in de-stressing.
Sleep on time. Since you have to wake up early, it is essential to sleep on time. You must
ensure that you take at least 7-8 hours of sleep every day.
Put your mobile aside. You should make it a habit to keep your phone aside while you are
working to enhance productivity. Also keep your phone at a distance when you are at home
and spend quality time with your family. The rays emitted by mobile phones are harmful. It
is thus suggested to keep it away especially when you sleep at night.
Connect with positive minds. It is always good to be friends with people who bring
positivity in your life and stay away from those who indulge in negative talks. Also socialize
with those who follow a healthy lifestyle rather than those who regularly indulge in
unhealthy habits such as smoking or drinking.
Have your meals on time. As important as it is to follow a healthy diet plan, it is equally
essential to have your meals on time. Make sure you do not skip your breakfast or any other
meal of the day and have your meals at the right intervals. It is also suggested to have 5-6
small meals during the day rather than having three large ones.
Follow your interests. Most of us are so engrossed in our work these days that we forget to
take out time to follow our interests and hobbies. It is a good idea to squeeze in some time to
follow your hobbies such as gardening, reading, writing or anything of your choice. These
act as a good replacement for the unhealthy habits and also help in keeping stress at bay.
You must make an effort to deliberately inculcate these healthy habits in your daily routine
to attain good physical and mental health.

is an understatement. It was more like an extreme form of culture shock for this adventurous
student who left Melbourne’s Monash University to spend a year at Boston College (BC).
Blackmore, 20, was joined at BC by 50 other exchange students who enroll in American
colleges each year. Blackmore discovered first hand there is a sea of difference between
reading about and experiencing America firsthand. She felt the difference as soon as she
stepped off the plane.
As soon as she landed in Boston, Blackmore could feel the tension in the air. She was about
to taste a lifestyle far more hectic than the one she left. “Driving in Boston is crazy,” says
Blackmore. “It took me a while to get used to the roads and the driving style here. I was
always afraid someone was going to hit me. It was particularly tricky since the steering
wheel was on the wrong side of the car. In Australia it’s on the right side.” Beyond the cars
and the traffic jams, Blackmore said it took a while to get used to so many people in one
place, all of whom seemed like they were moving very quickly.
“There are only 18 million people in Australia spread out over an entire country,” she says,
“compared to more than six million people in the state of Massachusetts alone. We don’t
have the kind of congestion you have in Boston. There is a whole different perception of
space.”
The pressing problem for Blackmore was making a quick adjustment to the American
lifestyle that felt like it was run by a stopwatch. For this easygoing Australian, Americans
seemed like perpetual-motion machines. “Americans are very time-oriented,” Blackmore
says. “Everything is done according to a plan. They’re always busy, which made me feel
guilty about wanting to just sit around and occasionally watch television. Australians, on the
other hand, value their leisure time. The pace there is a lot slower because we don’t feel the
need to always be busy. It’s not that Australians are lazy, it’s just that they have a different
concept of how time should be spent. Back home, I used to spend a lot more time just talking
to my friends.
It didn't take long for Blackmore to get used to American rhythms. “I felt the pressure to
work harder and do more because everyone was running around doing so much,” she says.
When BC students weren’t studying, Blackmore found it strange that they were
compulsively jogging, running, biking, or doing aerobics in order to be thin. “Compared to
home, I heard a lot of stories about the pressure to be thin and that many young American
women have eating disorders. I’ll go out with a friend and just enjoy a good meal and have a
good time, whereas an American girl would just eat only a small amount of food on her
plate.”
