INFORMATION BROCHURE

1. About RGIPT
Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology (RGIPT), Jais, is an autonomous institution established
by the Government of India. The Institute has been accorded the status of “An Institution of National
Importance” along the lines of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT) under an Act of Parliament
(“Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Petroleum Technology Act 2007”). RGIPT is co-promoted as an energy
domain specific institute by six leading Oil Public Sector Units (ONGC, IOCL, OIL, GAIL, BPCL and
HPCL) in association with the Oil Industry Development Board (OIDB). The Institute is associated with
leading international universities and institutions specializing in the domain of Petroleum & Energy
Technology. Institute’s prime objective is to provide world class education, training, and research to
roll out competent human resources to meet the growing requirements of the Petroleum & Energy
sector. The aspiration is to develop India as a global manpower hub for the entire Petroleum and
Energy Sector. The Institute offers B.Tech., IDD and M.Tech. programmes in various Engineering
disciplines along with a MBA programme. PhD programmes in various areas of basic sciences,
humanities, engineering and management are also offered at the Institute.

RGIPT Jais
Campus

The B.Tech. programmes of the Institute are aimed at developing manpower with sound theoretical
and experimental background in frontier areas of engineering, sciences and interdisciplinary subjects
pertaining to petroleum and energy. The emphasis is on understanding the scientific basis and
engineering principles involved in solving problems of practical importance in the relevant field
using multidisciplinary approach. An important component of these programmes is to instill a sense
of social responsibility, promote independent thinking and develop aptitude towards solving real
problems among students. These programmes seek to develop manpower of the highest quality to
cater to the needs of industry, R & D organizations and academic institutions. The Institute received
a rank for the first time in 2020 in the NIRF assessment conducted by the MHRD, Govt. of India. The
rank of 134th received by the Institute in the category of Engineering Institutions, can be termed as
highly impressive considering the fact that the Institute is relatively new with limited student strength
and offers domains specific UG and PG programmes. In subsequent years, the aspiration is to be
placed within the top 50 in the NIRF ranking framework.

With a view to supplement its on-campus academic offerings, the RGIPT has established two centres at
Sivasagar, Assam and Bengaluru, Karnataka. Assam Energy Institute, the centre of RGIPT at Sivasagar,
Assam is envisaged to offer programs of education and training of skilled technical manpower at the diploma
and advance diploma level courses in various areas of the petroleum sector as per the requirements of
the oil, gas and petrochemical industries. The Energy Institute, Bengaluru centre is mandated to offer
academic programmes along with conducting cutting-edge research in the energy domain. The centre is
established to also handle technology licensing and commercialization along with translational research.

2. Training & Placement

Engineering and Technology is the backbone of the development of the society. Living, health and
economic standards of the people of the society depend on the availability of advanced materials,
devices and support service systems. These are made available by manufacturing and service
industries. The Institution has a dedicated Training & Placement cell headed by a Professor In-
charge to look after the placement activities. In an attempt to give world class industrial exposure
to students, the training and placement cell of RGIPT offers summer internship opportunities to its
students. UG degree holders in engineering and technology are directly employed by a number of
reputed Industries through campus placement drive. RGIPT boasts of placement of its students with
handsome pay packages in renowned companies like public sector units (IOCL, ONGC, BPCL, HPCL
etc) and also multinational companies (Torrent Gas, Wipro Ltd, Shale, Infosys etc).

The graduates of RGIPT are in great demand for placement in Oil and Energy domain industries. Akin
to previous years, most of the leading companies and PSUs in the domain areas of Petroleum &
Energy visited RGIPT for campus recruitment last year and offered jobs to all of the eligible graduates
of 2020 in Chemical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering discipline. The list of recruiters includes
ONGC, OIL, Torrent Gas, Wipro, HMEL, Reliance, Pie Infocomm, BORL, HPCL, IOCL, IOAGPL etc. A
large section of graduating students opted for higher studies in universities abroad, IITs and IIMs via
scoring good ranks in GRE, CAT, GMAT and GATE examinations.

The Institute is introducing the following B.Tech. and IDD programmes from 2020-21 academic year
onwards after extensive research and buoyed by strong feedback from the leading industries on the
projected manpower demand in the following discipline and promising employability potential of the
graduates.

„„ B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering (Intake 60)

„„ B.Tech. in Electronics Engineering (Intake 60)
„„ IDD in Petroleum Engineering (Intake 20)
„„ IDD in Chemical Engineering (Intake 20)
The training & placement cell has already communicated
with a number of potential recruiters in these disciplines
to explore the possibility of internship and future
placement of graduating students.

institute, RGIPT puts sufficient emphasis on encouraging technical creativity among the students and
faculty members. Design and Innovation Center (DIC) is an initiative aimed at keeping the technical
creativity brewing in the RGIPT academic community. Under the DIC, the faculties and the students
propose innovation driven projects and the center supports by providing guidance, infrastructure,
monitoring, and some funding as well, to run the projects.

The Design Innovation Center (DIC) is constituted to sponsor and monitor the following kinds of
technical projects:

„„ Short Term/Summer Projects (with duration around less than three months)
„„ Extended Projects/B.Tech. Projects

3.2 Library
The RGIPT central library is fully computerized with a large and
ever growing collection of books. Currently, more than 8000 books
covering engineering, science, humanities and social science are
available in the library. Currently, we are in the process to create
the text book bank for the students in the library. A total of
15 printed journals, 14 magazines and access to over 30,000
full text online journals are available in the library. Campus wide
internet connectivity provides students access to online library
resources such as Infraline, EBSCO, Emerald, American Chemical
Society (ACS), One Petro, SEG, AAPG etc.

3.3 Central Research facilities

World-class teaching Institutions across the globe essentially boast of State-of-the-Art research
environment as both teaching and research are both complementary. The Institution has established
a Central Research facilities (CRF), where high end sophisticated equipment like NMR, XPS, XRF,
FESEM, HRTEM, XRD, SAXS, AFM and many other are installed to characterize the samples of in-
house researchers as well as received from outside. These facilities are maintained and operated
by qualified technical personals. The aim of the CRF is to promote cutting edge research in the
frontier areas of Energy and Petroleum at RGIPT & its centres and also help nearby academic & R&D
