A Community Learning Event

Local Park Cleanup

This is a school-wide event that I would organize, along with some help from my
colleagues. I would require the administration to help promote the event and
post it on the school website and in the newsletter.

What: An afternoon to bring the community together and clean-up a local park in
the community. The park chosen for this event is one familiar to the students and
visited by many local schools. It is an enormous space, equipped with a water
park, playground, multiple ponds, walking trails, and huge grass space.

Who: Students, parents, staff and members of the local community surrounding
the park area.

When: 12:30 to 2:00pm on Wednesday September 25th, 2019.

Where: Hawthorne park located at 10513 144 St, Surrey, BC.

Why: This event has been planned in an effort to bring awareness to the impact
of our footprint on the world. Having talked about ways in which our lifestyles
and decision affect our local community, this is an opportunity to help take care
of the planet we live on. After focusing on garbage clean-up at our own school,
students will have the opportunity to clean-up a park in the local area, one that is
visited by many of our students throughout the year. In an effort to making this
world a better place to live, we will collect garbage and also focus our efforts
towards recycling various materials found in the park.

How: This event will take place on the afternoon of September 25, 2019. The park
is about a 10-minute walk from the school and will be reached on foot by
students, parents, staff and community volunteers.

Leading up to the event, students will engage in discussions about how, we as a

community, can take care of our planet. Cleaning up garbage and recycling will be
some of the ways discussed on how we can take care of our planet. Preparation
will begin days leading up to the event, wherein I would be coordinating with
community volunteers and acquiring all the supplies necessary. As I will be leading
the event, I will have my students create awareness posters that will be displayed
around the school, as well as have them circulate to the classrooms, to introduce
the event. As per my peers’ suggestions, I will also help organize a “Green Team”
planning committee, consisting of students and staff that will help promote and
organize the event!

On the day of the event, teachers will remind students of the purpose and
benefits of our plan. Once at the park, students, parents and volunteers will be
equipped with gloves, tongs, biodegradable bags and bins to collect recycling. Not
only will we focus on cleaning up garbage found in the park, but also draw
attention to the many things we can recycle. Bins will be set up to organize
recyclable materials. Materials such as bottles and cans will be gathered to bring
to the local bottle depot and money collected will be donated to Plastic Oceans
Foundation Canada, as a way to help with shoreline clean-ups, education for
communities and schools, as well as solutions for collected plastics.

Organization: Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada https://plasticoceans.ca/

Day of the event

8:30 to 9:30 Students will enter school and take part in classroom activities,
highlighting the importance of cleaning up and recycling. These activities will be
geared towards specific grade levels and lead by the teacher.

9:30 Snack time

9:30 to 10:00 Recess

10:00 to 11:00 Teachers will discuss the importance of the event and highlight the
details of the afternoon. Each classroom will be given gloves and tongs (to pick up
garbage), biodegradable bags and a bin to organize recyclable materials.

11:00 to 11:30 Lunchtime and recess

11:30 to 12:00 Students will be organized into their groups and an adult will be
assigned to supervise that group (a staff member or parent volunteer).
12:00 Classes will begin walking down to the park.

12:30 to 2:00 Classes are to clean up the park in their designated areas. These will
be highlighted on a map for the teachers and parent volunteers and given out
ahead of time.

2:00 Classes begin walking back to the school.

2:30 Students are dismissed for the day.

Possible challenges:
 Students need to be informed of the possible hazardous materials they may
find in the park, including drug paraphernalia and needles. They will be
reminded NOT to touch any of these substances. Classes will be divided
into small groups, accompanied by an adult, to help supervise with the
clean-up.
 Too many people in one area! Although the park is big, it is important that
classes are given sections to focus on, to help cover the entirety of the park
and avoid too many people in one location. A map, with highlighted areas
of where they will be cleaning up, will be given to teachers in advanced,
and passed out to other staff members and adults on the day of the event.

Follow-Up activities:

 Bringing the recyclables to the local bottle depot and collecting money to
be donated to the Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada. This would be done
by myself and other colleagues.
 Reviewing the event and asking the students what their thoughts and
impressions were.
 Organizing a school-wide assembly to discuss the impact of the event! This
may include how much garbage was cleaned-up, how much money was
donated to the Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada and the contribution
made by students and staff at the event.
 As per my peers’ suggestions, I will also help plan and facilitate a bottle
drive for families who would not be able to participate in the day’s event!
This would be an opportunity for them to help contribute and the money
collected would also be donated to the Plastic Oceans Foundation Canada.
