About this audiobook
New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Mariana Zapata’s most beloved book, The Wall of Winnipeg and Me—now with new exclusive content!
Vanessa Mazur refuses to feel bad for quitting—she knows she’s doing the right thing. The thankless job of personal assistant to the top defensive end in the National Football Organization was always supposed to be temporary. She has plans for her life, and none of them include washing extra-large underwear one more day for a man who could never find it in him to tell her good morning, congratulate her on a job well done, or wish her a happy birthday—even when she was spending it working for him.
The legendary “Wall of Winnipeg” may be adored by thousands, but after two years Van has had enough.
But when Aiden Graves shows up at her door begging her to come back, she’s beyond shocked. Mr. Walled-Off Emotions is actually letting his guard down for once. And she’s even more dumbstruck when he explains that her job description is about to become even more outrageous: something that takes the “personal” in personal assistant to a whole new level.
What do you say to the man who is used to getting everything he wants?
Mariana Zapata
Mariana Zapata lives in a small town in Colorado with her husband and two oversized children—her beloved Great Danes, Dorian and Kaiser. When she’s not writing, she’s reading, spending time outside, forcing kisses on her boys, or pretending to write.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to be a slow burn with a long buildup, but the end is worth the wait. The male character's behavior is initially rude and cold, but readers wish there was more understanding of his journey to falling in love. The book is funny, emotional, and gripping, with excellent narration that brings the story to life. Fans of sports romance will especially enjoy this special and highly recommended book, which is a favorite of the year.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5Sep 12, 2025 5 star book for me except for the female narrator. She’s a little singsong-y also it sounds like she needs to blow her nose. It’s driving me crazy.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Mar 10, 2025 Loved loved loved this! Such a great story about overcoming your past and accepting the love you deserve.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Nov 1, 2024 Good if you're a high school girl. I'm not that.
- Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5Oct 29, 2024 I am at chapter 12 and her voice is killing me plus wow so boring. Skipped chapters like crazy. Chapter 32. She is really bad
- Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5Jul 19, 2024 DNF. Female narrator makes me crazy, she sounded terrified and on the edge of the tears all the time. Just couldn't focus on book with all that whining.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Dec 9, 2023 Loved this version it brought Aiden and Vanessa to life.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Nov 23, 2023 I don’t usually write reviews like this. But I had to for this one. I LOVED this story. And the two voice actors did such a phenomenal job that I was completely lost in the performance. I’m not a huge fan is sports romance but this one…. This one is special. I enjoyed it so much. I’ll be giving Mariana Zapata’s other books now. Highly recommended. You won’t be disappointed.

I flew through all the 16 hours of this book in a couple of days ?
My goal for 2023 was to read a Mariana Zapata book. Of course I was dreading it due to the size, amount of angst and basically one spicy scene. I couldn't have been more foolish. It was funny, emotional and gripping.
But the narration?! Oh my God, Emma Wilder is in a league of her own! She made me laugh and (almost) cry. I felt everything thanks to her! Even though it's a single POV, all the male dialogue is spoken by a male narrator. This style of narration is the second best thing to a double POV.
This is a love story between an NFL player and his (former) assistant. Aiden has a single focus: football and his whole life and Vanessa's professional one revolves around the sport. However, she doesn't plan to assist him till his retirement, she wants to be her own boss and focus on graphic design, so she quits. After some time passes, Aiden reaches out to her with an offer that will bring Vanessa back into his life and it's one she can't refuse.
This might have been my first, but it will definitely not be my last MZ book. I loved all the emotions this book brought and all the new aspects of distorted family life it put a light on. The chemistry was there, but I was surprised to discover that the story hooked me up so much so I didn't scream at the characters to just jump their bones already. It was that well paced.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Oct 28, 2023 Loved this book but know that it’s a SUPER SLOW BURN. So be prepared for a very long buildup. The end was worth the wait though. This is NOT for the insta-love readers however

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Sep 22, 2023 It was slow and sweet. I wish there was more about male character. I didn’t really understand him. Why was he so rude and cold towards her for 2 years and when did he fall in love.1 person found this helpful
