This table began as a comparison of Etruscan words to other Indo-European words, and it is clear that the linkage to Etruscan illuminates some new patterns in Indo-European word relationships. We added for further comparison words from the Baltic group (Latvian), Kartvelian (Georgian) and Uralic (Finnish) and Basque, a "language isolate" that looks as much Indo-European as othes in the Indo-European group. For those who advocate Hurrian connections Hurrian words that are available have been added to the table.  *PIE specialists have been speculating on the idea that the three language families, Baltic, Uralic and Kartvelian may be related to Indo-European, perhaps as a super family.
  The Indo-European family of languages is believed to have originated north of the Black Sea (Pontic Region). Some scholars have indicated a Caucasus origin. Although we can't rule out borrowing among [unrelated] languages it appears from the interesting shifts that the languages in our "Indo-European Table may be one family. Este artigo pretende chamar a atención sobre a existencia dalgúns fenómenos dialectais que mostran a existencia dunha área xeolingüística galego-asturiana (que inclúe o Baixo-Minho portugués) que xa ten a súa orixe no mesmo momento da romanización. De feito, retómase a noción xeo-histórico-lingüística de Gallaecia Magna demarcada por Joseph M. Piel como locus xeográfico orixinario do nacemento do portugués, do galego e do asturiano. Esta área estaba formada polo noroeste de Portugal, as provincias de Pontevedra, Coruña, Lugo e a metade occidental de Oviedo. Algunhas diferenzas entre galego e portugués (que agrupan galego con asturiano) deben remitirse á inclusión de Galicia e do oeste de Asturias nesta área. Os fenómenos mostran un prolongado contacto galego-asturiano e unha fidelidade do galego e do asturiano a esta área e un comportamento independente e, ás veces, unitario do portugués e do castelán con respecto a estes fenómenos.

In den nunmehr sechzig Jahren ihres Bestehens war die neue Wissenschaft vom Übersetzen immer wieder bemüht, ihr Verhältnis zur Linguistik zu definieren – sei es durch die Übernahme theoretischer Ansätze aus verschiedenen sprachwis-senschaftlichen Schulen oder aber durch die Abgrenzung von linguistischen Fragestellungen. So hat die Übersetzungswissenschaft jahrzehntelang die innere Entwicklung der Sprachwissenschaft von der sprachkontrastiven Forschung bis hin zur Computerlinguistik mimetisch mitverfolgt, um dann später im Zuge ihrer Emanzipation von der Matrix-Disziplin Linguistik auch eine Reihe anders orientierter "Wenden" (Snell-Hornby 2006) zu erleben. Dabei waren es insbesondere die Kultur- und Kognitionswissenschaften, die den Horizont der übersetzungswissenschaftlichen Reflexionen entscheidend erweiterten. Allerdings ist die Linguistik weiterhin ein Referenzpunkt. Davon zeugen neue Publikationen (z. B. Kvam 2009, Milliaressi 2011), die linguistische Fragestellungen in systematischer sowie praktischer Hinsicht als aktuell für die Frage der Translation erachten. Jörn Albrecht (2001) kündigt sogar einen linguistic return der neueren Übersetzungsforschung an.

This paper deals with grammatical aspects of code-switching between Italian and Italo-Romance dialects, and focuses on the case of negative constructions featuring a MICA-type particle (i.e. a particle deriving from the Latin MICA(M) " crumb ") in a corpus of Italian and bresciano speech data. The case at hand, which will be examined following the so-called comparative variationist method (cf. Poplack & Tagliamonte 2001 inter alia), will offer valuable insight into the conventionalization of mixing patterns and the interplay between code-switching and convergence in Italo-Romance.

In several Romance languages, including Catalan, Spanish, Asturian and Neapolitan, several verbs ('phone', 'answer', 'shoot', 'rob', among others) can take a dative-or accusative-marked complement. I argue that this alternation is indeed a transition from dative to accusative; that is, it is a process of syntactic change, with different stages of evolution depending on the dialectal or even idiolectal variety. The relevant verbs, being a priori dative-taking intransitive verbs, are analyzed as unergatives, made up of a light verb and a nominal, 'phone = do+phone call'. When the complement 'to somebody' is added, a ditransitive structure is obtained, where I assume that the direct ('phone call') and the indirect ('to somebody') objects are related via an applicative head. The properties of this functional applicative head allow me to explain the change from dative to accusative case in the first stages of syntactic change. Likewise, I show that the completion of the syntactic change results in a true transitivization of the structure.

Darstellung der valdostanischen Mehrsprachigkeit unter zwei Aspekten: Teil 1 (Externe Sprachgeschichte) bietet ein von der Vorgeschichte bzw. der Romanisierung bis in die 1990er-Jahre reichendes Panorama der Geschichte des Aostatals unter besonderer Bedachtnahme auf die sprachliche und autonomiepolitische Situation. Teil 2 (Soziolinguistik) stellt dazu das empirische und synchrone Gegenstück dar. Es wird ein Forschungsbericht über Untersuchungen gegeben, die in den Jahren 1987ff. in 24 valdostanischen Ortschaften bei über 100 Gewährspersonen durchgeführt worden sind.

The purpose of this paper is to shed light on a particular behavior displayed
by verbs of inherently directed motion, the availability of a causative transitive alternate, and how this phenomenon interacts with the presence of clitic se in the intransitive variant. Data from Catalan, Aragonese and Italian varieties, none of which have received much attention in the literature, will prove crucial for our proposal. We adopt an inter-Romance perspective and a nanosyntactic approach to lexicalization in order to refine the correlation Jiménez-Fernández and Tubino (2014, 2017) find for Spanish, where inherently directional motion verbs are claimed to be more easily causativized (entrar el coche ‘go in the car’) in varieties where the use of se in the intransitive forms is also more frequent (Juan se entró ‘Juan se went in’).

Establishing the origin and dating of the palatalization of the CA and GA clusters in the Rhaeto-Romance languages and in the Cisalpine area is one of the most debated problems in Romance linguistics, also because of the classificatory implications ascribed to this phonetic mutation. In 1958 the Slovene romanist Anton Grad suggested a ‘low’ dating (XII-XIV centuries) for such palatalization in Friulian, on the basis of the loan words present in western Slovene dialects. However, on the basis of toponomastic data and other interlinguistic considerations, it is possible to predate the palatalization of the CA and GA in the Friulian area before the year 1000.

A historical overview in Judezmo of the use of Romanization for writing Judezmo (Ladino, Judeo-Spanish) followed by a description of the Romanization rules advocated today by the La Autoridad Nasionala del Ladino i Su Kultura and the Akademia Nasional del Ladino en Israel (Jerusalem).

Le dialecte de Saint-Priest-la-Feuille, petit village limousin du Nord de la Creuse, est encore aujourd'hui un idiome vivant. Une partie importante de la population, surtout parmi les gens âgés de plus de quarante ans, maîtrise le vocabulaire et les conjugaisons de base tout au moins.
Tout le monde n'est pas d'accord sur le nom qu'il faut donner à ce parler. "Marchois", le nom employé ici, dérive de l'ancienne province de la Marche, qui englobait grosso-modo la Creuse actuelle. Ce nom est employé assez couramment par les gens qui s'intéressent à l'occitan.
Cependant, il présente un grave inconvénient: les frontières de la Marche historique ne correspondent pas au marchois tel qu'on l'envisage ici. Le Sud de la Creuse emploie des parlers appartenant aux dialectes occitans limousin (à l'ouest) ou auvergnat (à l'est). Il vaudrait donc mieux parler de "bas-marchois" à propos du dialecte étudié ici, celui de Saint-Priest.

The Old Sicilian Confessionali are devotional texts of the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries with a very simple textual structure. In particular, two of them, to a large extent, are lists of questions aimed at investigating the sinner and his sins. Nevertheless they prove to be a useful field to define the values of the “passato prossimo” and the “passato remoto”. In the two texts, the two tenses have a clearly distinct distribution. The former has a perfective value, the latter has an aoristic value and, regardless of a temporal criterion, they occur according to this aspectual opposition.

Il nome del linguista croato Pavao Tekavčić (*1931, †2007) è inseparabilmente legato alla nota Grammatica storica, pubblicata in tre volumi (I. Fonematica, II. Morfosintassi, III. Lessico) e in due edizioni (Bologna 1972, 1980). Si tratta di un vero «classico» della grammaticografia italiana, esaurito già da parecchio tempo, ma tuttora in uso presso gli atenei di filologia romanza. Per rimediare al fatto che la seconda edizione (ridotta e ammodernata) si è rivelata piena di sviste e di errori tipografici, da attribuire all’editore-tipografo e non certo all’autore, il contributo presente fornisce, tra l’altro, un elenco di 360 errata e delle rispettive correzioni.

The aim of this paper is to analyse the Catalan and Spanish quotative recomplementation (QRC) in terms of pragmatic features encoded by morphosyntax. In QRC constructions, the second complementizer (que2) is used to set the boundaries between a reproduced discourse and the clausal elements that were implicit in the original discourse, which must be reintroduced in the new communicative situation because they are not shared by the interlocutor (e.g. Sp. Están sentados en la mesa --> Ha dicho que1 los invitados #(que2) están sentados en la mesa). QRC is an evidence for the existence of two types of complements for assertive verbs: quotative complements (embedded speech acts with a de dicto interpretation) and reportative complements (speech events that are stated, with a de re interpretation; e.g. Sp. Están sentados en la mesa --> Ha dicho que1 los invitados (#que2) ya están en su sitio). Quotative complements have the same propositional structure as the original sentence and can include some elements such as speech act adverbs —which are oriented to the original speaker (i.e. the matrix clause subject)—, Hanging Topics, or discourse connectors. On the contrary, reportative complements may be a summary of the original discourse and they have not such elements oriented to the original speaker or the previous discourse. Besides, reportative complements allow long-distance movement from the embedded CP to the matrix CP.

This book deals with discourse markers in the sociolinguistic context of Sicily (Italy). Proposing a broad sociolinguistic approach, two items are taken into account, 'arà' and 'mentri'. These elements are treated synchronically at first, to describe their functional and formal properties, then diachronically, to show how the discourse-marking uses have developed, and eventually from a sociolinguistic perspective, to account for how they are involved in language contact in the bilingual repertoire and how they acquire socio-symbolic value in the community. By integrating the structural, the historical, and the social perspectives, this book allows for a deeper understanding of discourse markers.
