Religious Landscape

The art of resident monastic painter Jan Jerzyczek (1788-1842) is paradoxical, as his technical skills and painting technique were categories as folk art even though the artist himself copied 17th century work and his paintings are based on 16th century Antwerpian engravings as well as his own experience of the Calvary’ mystery plays. Authors of monographs on the Calvary complex barely mention Jerzyczek, yet even without providing a historical, economic, and political context of the job of a resident monastic painter in the early 19th century, due to which they fail to notice the phenomenon of Jan’s paintings in the course the changes that were in progress at that time. Places are the repository of the human imprints on the landscape, and the true representative of the changes and transformations that took with time, through the channel of placemaking. The studied city, Ayodhya is one among the holy-heritage cities in Hindu cosmogony that is known for bestowing salvation. Of course, it had a history of the Babri Masjid-Rama Janmabhumi issue, which once recorded an example of the contested landscape; however, it is resolved smoothly through the jurisprudence process and public awakening. The transformation of the landscape and the issue of placemaking, with case studies of the Ram Janmabhumi temple and Queen Huh memorial park, are illustrated here as examples of making and recreating the cultural landscapes in the holy-heritage city of Ayodhya in the frame of historical processes and events. The historical growth and landscape changes in Ayodhya are narrated, emphasising the recreation of the Rama Janmabhumi temple. Moreover, the recent development and expansion of Queen Huh Memorial Park, honouring Queen Huh who went to Gimhae (Korea) and married King Kim Suro in CE 48 as narrated in the 13th-century memoir—the Samguk Yusa, represents an example of Indo-Korean interfaces of placemaking and will promote cross-cultural integration and cultural tourism. The narration and interpretation of the case studies will further be compared with a similar case of holy-heritage cities in India.

W ramach trzeciego naboru wniosków MOLAB/FIXLAB PL w 2019 r. zrealizowano program badań obrazu tablicowego z cudami słynącym wizerunkiem Matki Boskiej Bolesnej, tzw. Piety z Czarnego Potoku (1649 r.), której autorstwo przypisuje się antwerpskiemu malarzowi wykształconemu w Rzymie – Mateuszowi Ingermanowi, osiadłemu w Małopolsce w XVII w. Obraz został z obu stron sfotografowany w światłach analitycznych (VIS, Na, UV, IR), a następnie poddany skanowaniu metodą makrofluorescencji rentgenowskiej (MA–XRF), dzięki czemu uzyskano czytelne mapy rozkładu pierwiastków na jego powierzchni i wstępną ocenę użytych przez artystę pigmentów oraz zasięg późniejszych przekształceń. Na odwrociu, pod widniejącym napisem czernią, odnaleziono jego pierwotną wersję o zbieżnej treści, z dodatkowo widocznymi dwiema kolejnymi literami nazwiska dawnego proboszcza kościoła w Czarnym Potoku. The aim of this article is to present the role of geographic factors (elements of the natural, social and geopolitical environment) in shaping the broadly construed sacral landscape, with particular emphasis on its impact on the development of religious tourism space. The individual determinant of the development of the sacral landscape of the region is its individual and symbolic perception of  sacrum  but its final form and spatial and materialistic organization are influenced by numerous factors of non-religious nature ( profanum ). Geological considerations, relief, vegetation, and even climatic and weather phenomena largely determine the image of the cultural landscape and delimit its extent. The traditional religious landscape is changing considerably, and the current religious landscape exhibits a remarkable variety. The religious landscape was shifting. Today in Europe there are three general trends – secularization, new spirituality and immigrant religions such as Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism additional to Judeo-Christian tradition. Phenomenological approaches are crucial for developing new and deepening existing modes of cooperation between dissimilar cultures and religions. Using phenomenological approach we look on religious landscape of Vilnius as pluralistic from the two general views: old historical, traditional source and nowadays the increasing diversity. This study investigates how different religious streams influence the morphological development of a historic city by giving a unique identity as a sacred landscape. Sylhet city, which is popularly known as the spiritual capital of Bangladesh, has been shaped by two different spiritual streams over years. From thousand years Sylhet is known for a transitional hub of political, cultural, ethnical and religious migration which shaped a unique urban fabric in the morphology of this city. The spirituality of Sylhet deeply influenced by two major streams of religious philosophy of both Islam and Hinduism, not in conventional form but in form or Sufism and Vaishnavism which is deeply rooted in a spirit of mysticism, humanity, and self-consciousness. В статье раскрываются некоторые особенности становления и развития религиоведческого образования и религиоведческих научных исследований в Алтайском государственном университете. Основное внимание сосредоточено на деятельности лаборатории этнокультурных и религиоведческих исследований, а также кафедры политической истории, национальных и государственно-конфессиональных отношений. Рассматриваются основные проблемные моменты в развитии религиоведения на региональном уровне. В работе обращается внимание на то, что проведение различных экспедиционных археологических и этноконфессиональных исследований на Алтае, в Казахстане и Монголии стало возможным благодаря активному участию сотрудников указанных подразделений в грантовой деятельности, в т.ч в реализации проектов, поддержанных РФФИ. РГНФ. Фондом Президента РФ и др. Отмечается, что коллектив религиоведов Алтайского государственного университета активно публикует результаты своих исследований, в т.ч в виде монографий, выпусков журнала «Народы и религии Евразии», а также организует различного уровня всероссийские и международные конференции. В рамках деятельности указанных подразделений университета отмечается заключение договоров о сотрудничестве как с научно-образовательными центрами России, так и зарубежных стран. Одно из приоритетных научных направлений ученых Алтайского государственного университета связано с изучением особенности развития религиозного ландшафта Западной Сибири и сопредельных регионов Центральной Азии от эпохи поздней древности и до современности. При этом отмечается, что эволюция религиозного ландшафта обусловлена особенностями этнических, социально-экономических, культурных и политических процессов.

The article reveals some features of the formation and development of religious education and religious research at the Altai state University. The main attention is focused on the activities of the laboratory of ethno-cultural and religious studies, as well as the Department of political history, national and state-confessional relations. The main problem points in the development of religious studies at the regional level are considered. The work draws attention to the fact that various expeditionary archaeological and ethno-confessional research in the Altai, Kazakhstan and Mongolia became possible due to the active participation of employees of these units in grant activities, including in the implementation of projects supported by the RFBR, RGNF, The Fund of the President of the Russian Federation etc. It is noted that the team of religious scholars of the Altai state University actively publishes the results of their research, including in the form of monographs, issues of the journal “Peoples and religions of Eurasia”, as well as organizes various levels of all-Russian and international conferences. As part of the activities of these departments of the University noted the conclusion of agreements on cooperation with scientific and educational centers of Russia and foreign countries. One of the priority scientific directions of scientists of the Altai state University is connected with the study of the peculiarities of the religious landscape of Western Siberia and neighboring regions of Central Asia from the late antiquity to the present. It is noted that the evolution of the religious landscape is due to the peculiarities of ethnic, socioeconomic, cultural and political processes.

Ens limitarem a les zones de la Bètica i la Lusitania. Les aigües mineromedicinals eren considerades sagrades per les seves propietats curatives i els dominus utilitzaran un seguit d'elements iconogràfics en els mosaics de les estances que servirà de recordatori de les propietats salutíferes de les mateixes. Abstract This study deals with a new interpretation towards certain decorative motifs found in the mosaics of domus and villas near spas and thermal spots. We will limit ourselves to the areas of Bética and Lusitania. The mineral-medicinal waters were considered sacred for their healing properties and the Dominus will use a series of iconographic elements in the mosaics of the rooms that will serve as a reminder of the health-care properties of the same.

Las aguas  mineromedicinales eran considerades sagrades por sus  propiedades curativas y los dominus utilitzaran una serie  d’elementos fonográficos en los  mosaicos de las habitaciones  que servirán de recuerdo de les propiedades  salutíferes de las mismas.

Přestože se více než 80 % obyvatel Prahy neidentifikuje s žádnou církví ani náboženskou společností, díky bohatému historickému vývoji spjatému s katolicismem je sakrální krajina města velmi pestrá. Dominance katolicismu je sice patrná dodnes, nicméně hlavně v průběhu 20. století se začaly výrazně pluralizovat nejen náboženské tradice, které v Praze působí, ale i samotná funkce sakrálních staveb. Právě vývoj sakrální krajiny v Praze, jeho dynamika,  proměny a důsledky pro současnou podobu Prahy jsou hlavním zájmem tohoto příspěvku.

This article presents preliminary results from the project “Religious Diversity of a Eurasian City:
Statistical and Cartographic Analysis.” The project focuses on the evolution of the religious situation
in late 19th–early 20th century Ekaterinburg. The research is based on documents found in
state and private archives, statistics, and visual materials. We have reconstructed the manner in
which different religious denominations formed their institutions in late 19th century Ekaterinburg
and how this diversity increased due to mass migration and a relatively tolerant religious
policy in the early 20th century. The paper argues that religious institutions played important roles
in advancing the civil society in Russia, as most of them promoted non-governmental forms of
socialization, education, and charity. The decade after the Revolution, often called “the Golden
Age” of Protestantism in Russia, ended with the Soviet state’s socialist modernization and atheist
policy. That resulted in the destruction of the city’s religious landscape. All the changes manifested
in this religious landscape can be presented as a text, which can be “read” and interpreted.

W rozmieszczeniu przestrzennym polskich ośrodków pielgrzymkowych wyraźnie zaznacza się region Karpat. Obecnie funkcjonuje tam ponad 120 katolickich sanktuariów (tj. około 15% ogółu polskich ośrodków pielgrzymkowych). Zdecydowana większość – 90 ośrodków (75% ogółu) związana jest z kultem maryjnym. W grupie 14 sanktuariów Pańskich, jakie obecnie funkcjonują w Karpatach Polskich, główną rolę odgrywają sanktuaria pasyjno-maryjne w Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej (sanktuarium o randze międzynarodowej) i Kalwarii Pacławskiej (sanktuarium o randze ponaddiecezjalnej)
Pierwsze sanktuaria Pańskie związane z kultem cudownych wizerunków Chrystusa powstały w Karpatach Polskich w XVI w. W XVII w. powstają tu sanktuaria kalwaryjskie związane z kultem Męki Pańskiej (Kalwaria Zebrzydowska i Kalwaria Pacławska). W sumie do końca XVIII w. w granicach dzisiejszych Karpat Polskich powstało 10 Pańskich ośrodków pielgrzymkowych. W odróżnieniu od pozostałych regionów pielgrzymkowych Polski, wszystkie sanktuaria Pańskie w Karpatach Polskich powstały przed 1945 r.
Analizując przestrzenne rozmieszczenie analizowanych ośrodków pielgrzymkowych, widoczna jest ich lokalizacja wzdłuż dolin głównych rzek karpackich: Soły, Dunajca, Białej, Ropy i Wisłoka.
Współczesna sieć sanktuariów Pańskich w Karpatach Polskich jest dziedzictwem wielowiekowej tradycji. Tworzą ją sanktuaria, w których czczone są cudowne wizerunki Dzieciątka Jezus, Przemienienia Pańskiego, Chrystusa Cierpiącego i Ukrzyżowanego, a także kalwarie i sanktuarium eucharystyczne. Pomimo iż analizowane sanktuaria stanowią tylko 12% ogółu karpackich ośrodków pielgrzymkowych, to od początku XVII w. zaznaczyły trwałą obecność w sieci sanktuariów w tym regionie Polski. Z przeprowadzonych badań wynika, że ruch pielgrzymkowy do analizowanych ośrodków pielgrzymkowych wykazuje z każdym rokiem tendencję wzrostową, a głównymi czynnikami, które mają na to wpływ są tradycje pątnicze, walory krajobrazowe regionu, walory historyczne i architektoniczne kościołów sanktuaryjnych, troska o rozwój kultu i praca duszpasterska opiekujących się sanktuarium księży lub zgromadzeń zakonnych oraz rozwój komunikacji.

W opracowaniu przedstawiono formy i wielkość ruchu turystycznego do największych sanktuariów Pańskich w Polsce. Sanktuaria te stanowią 10% ogółu ośrodków pielgrzymko-wych w naszym kraju. W opracowaniu przedstawiono również krótką analizę zasięgu prze-strzennego oddziaływania wybranych sanktuariów.
Sanktuaria Pańskie należą do najstarszych ośrodków pielgrzymkowych w Polsce. Obecnie w Polsce rejestruje się 73 sanktuaria poświęcone Chrystusowi. Ośrodki w Kalwarii Zebrzydowskiej i Krakowie-Łagiewnikach posiadają rangę mię-dzynarodową i zaliczane są do najważniejszych centrów pątniczych Europy. Sanktuarium w krakowskich Łagiewnikach jest światowym centrum kultu Bożego Miłosierdzia.
Do sanktuariów o randze krajowej zaliczono sanktuarium w Piekarach Śląskich i na Świętym Krzyżu, natomiast do grupy sanktuariów o zasięgu ponaddiecezjalnym zaliczono ośrodki w: Alwernii, Białymstoku, Cmolasie, Częstochowie (Dolina-Miłosierdzia), Glotowie, Kalwarii Pacławskiej, Krakowie-Mogile, Pakości, Nowym Sączu i Wejherowie. Najliczniejszą grupę wśród polskich sanktuariów Pańskich stanowią ośrodki o diecezjalnym (32%) i lo-kalnym (46%) zasięgu przestrzennym oddziaływania.

In the paper a spatial differentiation of the Sanctuaries of Our Lord in Poland was described. The aforementioned sanctuaries are the oldest pilgrimage centres in the country. Nearly half of them were founded in the 16th and 17th centuries. The centres in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska and Cracow–Łagiewniki are of international range and they are among the most frequently visited pilgrimage centres in Europe and the sanctuary in Łagiewniki has been declared the world centre of the cult of the Divine Mercy.

Sanktuarium Bożego Grobu w Jerozolimie, już od wczesnego średniowiecza, było źródłem inspiracji dla przedsięwzięć we wszystkich rodzajach sztuki europejskiej. Wyobrażenia i naśladownictwa Grobu Chrystusa powstawały m.in. w takich krajach, jak: Anglia, Francja, Hiszpania, Niemcy, Polska i Włochy. Jak zaznaczono na wstępie, kopiowano lub trawestowano różne elementy jerozolimskiego zespołu: sam sarkofag grobowy, komorę grobową, kaplicę Świętego Grobu, całą rotundę Anastasis, a nawet całe założenia Bazyliki Grobu Świętego w Jerozolimie.
Wśród wielu kaplic Grobu Chrystusa w Europie kilkanaście znajduje się na terenie Polski. Bardzo często zdarzało się, że te kaplice stawały się sanktuariami i mogą być przykładem translokacji kultu Grobu Chrystusa. Głównymi krzewicielami tego kultu był Zakon Kanoników Regularnych Stróżów Grobu Jerozolimskiego. W trzech kościołach na terenie naszego kraju, należących niegdyś do bożogrobców, zachowały się kaplice Bożego Grobu. Są to: bazylika Grobu Bożego w Miechowie, bazylika Świętego Ducha w Przeworsku i kościół śś. Piotra i Pawła w Nysie. Kaplice Grobu Pańskiego w Miechowie i Przeworsku są obecnie Sanktuariami Pańskimi, do których corocznie przybywają licznie pielgrzymi. Oprócz tych dwóch sanktuariów Świętego Grobu, w Polsce występują także kopie Grobu Chrystusa, które nie mają rangi sanktuarium. Do tej odmiennej grupy kaplic Bożego Grobu należą obiekty, które występują tylko na Śląsku (w Głogówku, Potępie i Żaganiu), oraz kaplice wchodzące w skład kalwarii, które stanowią najliczniejszą grupę.
Sanktuaria i kaplice Świętego Grobu to przede wszystkim miejsca kultu Męki i Zmartwychwstania Jezusa Chrystusa. Widoczne to jest zwłaszcza w okresie Wielkiego Postu oraz Wielkanocy, kiedy to przy tych kopiach jerozolimskiego Grobu gromadzą się rzesze wiernych, aby na modlitwie rozważać słowa: „Nie ma Go tu, bo zmartwychwstał, jak powiedział” (Mt 28, 6).

Religion had played a role for controlling power in Indian monarchy in the ancient past, and in contemporary India too it played a role in the formation of religious landscape and corporate identity of religious heritage, through commonly using processions, pilgrimage, religious assemblies, religious fairs (melā), and sacred places. Ayodhya-Faizabad represents an aesthetic and unique type of cultural landscape and heritagescape that include natural, cultural, tangible and intangibles heritages, and variety of cultural landscapes. The city’s cultural landscapes, are illustrated with riverfront sacredscapes and faithscapes, sacred sites associated with Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhist and ever Sufis (and other Muslims), and several other small congregations. The existence, maintenance and functioning of intangible heritages and sacredscapes make this city a role model for understanding spirit of place, ritualscapes, and finally a model for inclusive heritage development.

Ayodhya counted among one of the seven most scared and salvation-endowing cities of the India (i.e. Ayodhya, Mathura, Maya-Haridvar, Kashi, Kanchi, Avantika-Ujjain, Puri, Dvarka), is situated on the right bank of the river Sarayu (Ghaghara) at a distance of 7km east from Faizabad city (see Singh and Rana 2006: 277-285). Ayodhya (population: 55,890 in 2011 census) is the part of Faizabad Metropolitan city and both are known together as Ayodhya-Faizabad twin city (Urban Agglomeration/ Metropolitan City, population: 256,624 in 2011 census) extending between 26 0 47' North to 26 0 80' North Latitude and 82 0 12' East to 82 0 20' East Longitude. These two twin cities are divided by a pilgrimage route of Panchakroshi Yatra, and the entire sacred territory is demarcated by the Chaudahkroshi Yatra (see Fig. 1). The state's capital Lucknow lies at distance of 130km west and another holy city Varanasi at 221 km in southeast , Gorakhpur at 145km in east and Allahabad lies at distance of 167km in the south. Ayodhya-Faizabad Urban Agglomeration has a common Development Authority but separate Municipal Boards. According to Hindu mythology, Ayodhya was settled by King Manu (Hindu progenitor of mankind), and narrated as the birth place of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Vishnu. Ayodhya was one of the famous cities and the first capital of the powerful Koshala among the sixteen Mahajanapadas of ancient India (Law 1944: 424, Chakrabarti 2000: 378 and 387). Ayodhya for a period of over two thousand years has borne witnessed to the presence of Jainism, Buddhism, Shaivism, Vaishnavism, and Islam too, therefore Ayodhya consists of the sacred and religious places for Hindus together with Muslims, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs too (Shaw 2000: 698). In the 12th century under the sultanate rule at Delhi and Mughal rulers, Ayodhya was invaded and destroyed many times by the order of the Mughal invader Mir Baqi Tashkandi who demolished the famous Rama temple Ramajanmabhumi of Pratihara from the Gahadavala period at the birth place of Rama, and in the following period of fifteen months he built a Muslim monument (Babari mosque) using the debris of the temple. Since its inception this has been controversial and sensitive place for centuries and even today. Muslims have never performed prayer (namaz) there. As it has been centre of Hindu-Muslim riots, the main site was opened for devout Hindus till 23rd of February 1857 when the East India Company (Britain) made a separating wall and stop the entry of Hindus through the mosque since 5th of January 1950 under the law, and only restricted entry was permitted (Singh and Rana 2002: 301).

Sustainable tourism is influenced by the dimension of heritage (cultural/natural), including community, basic infrastructure, visitor, administration, and enterprises, and other related issues. In a way, tourism and cultural heritage are interrelated to each other. The Indian twin city of Ayodhya-Faizabad consists of the places of cultural heritage. Ayodhya is famous for pilgrimage, salvific quality, and holy tradition of Hindus. Of course, it is scared and religious place for Hindus, where also exists religious sites of Muslims, Jains, Buddhists, and Sikhs. Like other holy cities, Ayodhya too enumerates unique and variety of cultural heritagescapes, like tradition, faith, festivities, pilgrimages, folklore, custom, artefacts, historical building monuments, and other tangible and intangible cultural heritage that attract the tourists. Since 1992 Ayodhya has been suffered from the religious contestation, as exemplified by Babari mosque and Ramajanmabhumi temple; such type of contradiction obstacles the tourism development, however pilgrimage-tourism has been the main force in the city.

The landscape in Czechia has been influenced by variety of religious trends during the last decades, for example privatization and pluralization of religion or (post)secularization. This trends are connected with the process of globalization. Nowadays, Czech society is secularized to an extend unprecedented in the rest of the world. Almost 80% of population (2011) indicate that they are nondenominational. Nevertheless, sacral objects as well as religious institutions play an important role in the landscape and in the whole society. The explanation of tensions between post-socialistic sacralization in cultural landscape and secularization and religious pluralization in the society are the main aspects of the research within the new geography of religion in Czechia. This two trends are visible especially in the capital city of Prague, where the influence of diversification of religious communities leads to a high degree of disintegration of various religious movements. There is also a high increase in occultism in Prague, however, alternative religiosity is mostly in private sphere. The aim of this paper is to analyze the main trends and processes in Czech religious landscape with emphasis on religious landscape in the city of Prague. The paper is based on the qualitative and quantitative research in selected micro-regions in Czechia which was carried out during the summer of 2014.
