Religious Landscape

Religion had played a role for controlling power in Indian monarchy in the ancient past, and in contemporary India too it played a role in the formation of religious landscape and corporate identity of religious heritage, through commonly using processions, pilgrimage, religious assemblies, religious fairs (melā), and sacred places. Ayodhya-Faizabad represents an aesthetic and unique type of cultural landscape and heritagescape that include natural, cultural, tangible and intangibles heritages, and variety of cultural landscapes. The city’s cultural landscapes, are illustrated with riverfront sacredscapes and faithscapes, sacred sites associated with Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Buddhist and ever Sufis (and other Muslims), and several other small congregations. The existence, maintenance and functioning of intangible heritages and sacredscapes make this city a role model for understanding spirit of place, ritualscapes, and finally a model for inclusive heritage development.

En este trabajo la autora, que comienza aportando numerosas referencias nuevas sobre El Saucedo desde el siglo XVI, hace una propuesta metodológica: aunque había ya bastante bibliografía española sobre termalismo antiguo y lugares sagrados asociados con ellos, casi nunca se había tratado de definir cuál era exactamente el “paisaje del teónimo”, y descubrir a través de ello qué se curaba en estos lugares; para ello se precisa una mayor interdisciplinariedad.

Frente a la interpretación tradicional (y aún en vigor) de los excavadores de este yacimiento como una ‘villa’ privada reconvertida en el siglo VI en basílica cristiana (pero con una extraña diosa pagana bajo su “altar mayor”), la autora propone aquí que ya de antiguo el edificio, erigido en un ‘salicetum’ (saucedo), era un ‘locus sacer', un 'delubrum' o santuario pagano con zona termal, que fue cristianizado luego como ‘delubrum’ con baptisterio a los pies, seguramente por la importancia e influjo que ya tenía.

La diosa ‘Iscallis’ (antes entendida como un hombre, o bien como la diosa propia de la británica Exeter), que deja rastros en la toponimia regional (Escalona, Illescas), sería una divinidad local, y trasunto de Proserpina. Un nuevo análisis de su precioso mosaico permite reconocer mejor, además de las cinco cráteras ya conocidas, una serpiente con cornucopia y un creciente lunar invertido (como muchos de bronce aparecidos en la zona, romanos y posteriores). Dos mosaicos en sendos absidiolos enfrente de ella, con delfines y granadas, insisten de nuevo en su carácter sanador y en que se trata de la diosa del inframundo (cuyo culto pervive en las “Mundas” talaveranas), y algunos hallazgos previos, como las asas de tres sítulas de bronce, un elemento más propio del ámbito religioso. Igualmente apoya el carácter sacro y sanador la existencia de dos fuentes inmediatas con un epígrafe “A las Ninfas”, que antes de 1999 no había sido asociada al yacimiento por los excavadores.

Finalmente la autora sugiere que el carácter curativo vendría precisamente de los sauces del lugar, que aportan el componente primario del hoy popular ácido acetilsalicílico (aspirina). Las epidemias de fiebres que se dieron en la zona de Talavera del siglo XIX probarían este problema sanitario, y su uso en ellas.

Análisis polínicos hechos y publicados diez años después (en 2009) vendrían a comprobar el “paisaje del teónimo” previamente imaginado. Esto, junto con buenas fotos en color del mosaico, se encuentra en la Addenda (1-8) que ahora se ha añadido al final del estudio.

Přestože se více než 80 % obyvatel Prahy neidentifikuje s žádnou církví ani náboženskou společností, díky bohatému historickému vývoji spjatému s katolicismem je sakrální krajina města velmi pestrá. Dominance katolicismu je sice patrná dodnes, nicméně hlavně v průběhu 20. století se začaly výrazně pluralizovat nejen náboženské tradice, které v Praze působí, ale i samotná funkce sakrálních staveb. Právě vývoj sakrální krajiny v Praze, jeho dynamika,  proměny a důsledky pro současnou podobu Prahy jsou hlavním zájmem tohoto příspěvku.

This article presents preliminary results from the project “Religious Diversity of a Eurasian City:
Statistical and Cartographic Analysis.” The project focuses on the evolution of the religious situation
in late 19th–early 20th century Ekaterinburg. The research is based on documents found in
state and private archives, statistics, and visual materials. We have reconstructed the manner in
which different religious denominations formed their institutions in late 19th century Ekaterinburg
and how this diversity increased due to mass migration and a relatively tolerant religious
policy in the early 20th century. The paper argues that religious institutions played important roles
in advancing the civil society in Russia, as most of them promoted non-governmental forms of
socialization, education, and charity. The decade after the Revolution, often called “the Golden
Age” of Protestantism in Russia, ended with the Soviet state’s socialist modernization and atheist
policy. That resulted in the destruction of the city’s religious landscape. All the changes manifested
in this religious landscape can be presented as a text, which can be “read” and interpreted.

The landscape in Czechia has been influenced by variety of religious trends during the last decades, for example privatization and pluralization of religion or (post)secularization. This trends are connected with the process of globalization. Nowadays, Czech society is secularized to an extend unprecedented in the rest of the world. Almost 80% of population (2011) indicate that they are nondenominational. Nevertheless, sacral objects as well as religious institutions play an important role in the landscape and in the whole society. The explanation of tensions between post-socialistic sacralization in cultural landscape and secularization and religious pluralization in the society are the main aspects of the research within the new geography of religion in Czechia. This two trends are visible especially in the capital city of Prague, where the influence of diversification of religious communities leads to a high degree of disintegration of various religious movements. There is also a high increase in occultism in Prague, however, alternative religiosity is mostly in private sphere. The aim of this paper is to analyze the main trends and processes in Czech religious landscape with emphasis on religious landscape in the city of Prague. The paper is based on the qualitative and quantitative research in selected micro-regions in Czechia which was carried out during the summer of 2014.

Taking the example of the Biturige civitas, and based on field studies, we investigate the establishment of sanctuaries in ancient settlement aeras. We then assess the role of the "large sanctuaries" in the process of territorialisation.
