Omeka

This research work is an experiment with the latest theory of bibliographic relationships as proposed by Murray & Tillett and is known as graph-friendly theory for biblio-cultural relationships. It sets objectives to develop a prototype digital archive of cultural text in an Indian language with the provision for bibliographic relationships based navigation to support the new user task 'to explore' included in IFLA-LRM, discusses groundbreaking theories of bibliographic relationships from the time of Panizzi to date, formulates research questions that are related to developing the prototype, and finally demonstrates the navigational framework through biblio-cultural relationships by using an array of open source software and open standards.

This poster reports on a work-in progress project of building a digital library for metadata records of books published by Sonzogno between 1800 and 1943. Metadata records from seven major libraries that have Sonzogno collections were harvested and used for building a unified collection for this project. Omeka, open-source software for building digital libraries, was used to host, manage, and provide the public with access to the collection. Currently, a sample set of the metadata of books published in 1885 is available from the digital library (http://sonzogno.cci.fsu.edu/). This poster reports on the current status of the project, explaining the process and challenges associated with building a digital library of the metadata collection (metadata harvesting and crosswalk) using Omeka.

Video games are increasingly part of everyday life, impacting our shared social norms and values across the world. Some game studies focus on the narrative to convey the socio-cultural nuances of games. Others emphasize the persuasive rhetoric of given mechanics in a game (Bogost 2007; Sisler 2017). However, "The Digital Borderlands: Glocalizing Iranian Video Games" foregrounds games made in non-Western contexts through frameworks of culture and discourse analysis (see: http://iranianvideogames.com/cms/). Through the emphasis of multimodality, my project on Iranian video games uses the Omeka Classic platform to envision temporal, geographical, and visual ways of portraying industry and culture. In doing so, I use the plugin tool Neatline for geotemporal mapping, and metadata collection to preserve Iranian games as cultural artifacts. In using the methodology of discourse and theoretical framework of glocalization, I show how video games are interconnected with socio-historical contexts and materializations that make claims about a society. At the same time, I argue that games made in Iran are part of a political and social discourse on a global and local level. By showing how games make arguments about culture and political consciousness, my preliminary conclusion is that games in Iran are not only in a dialectical conversation with games made globally but are forms of sacred defense and cultural preservation from a Western paradigm.

The widespread interest in digital humanities (DH) has given rise to a lively discussion about the role of technology in undergraduate classrooms. This article discusses the author's own experience designing and teaching two DH courses in a liberal arts college in North America and offers advice to others who wish to attempt similar courses. The different designs of these two courses serve to demonstrate different ways of tailoring pedagogical objectives and strategies according to the needs and readiness of different student audiences. Both courses illustrate how the infusion of technology into liberal arts programs advances student-centered learning and promotes the teaching of discipline-specific knowledge and critical thinking skills. They underscore the importance of blending technical instruction with methodological reflections and carefully scaffolding course content and activities.

Metadata  is  one of  the  important  concept  in  the  field  of  digital  technology  throughout  the  higher education  as  well  as  research  environment.  Digital  resource  management  is  possible  through  open source  standard  and  tool.  This  paper  has  select  the  metadata  standard  like  Visual  Resource Association  (VRA)  Core.  Now  the  methodology  is  very  simple  to  perform  and  add  the  different items  in  this  system.  Integrated  this  VRA  Core  metadata  framework  with  the  Omeka  open  source software  for  the  better  management  of  library  resources.  Apart  from  this  it  is  also  manage  the Museum for cataloguing the different images with suitable metadata. This integrated framework is very  user-friendly  for  easy  install  and  configure  the  metadata  with  fulltext  documents  and  also display the ngram view with sequence graph of different metadata available in the database.

"This article concerns the dreams, practices and future for digital media for public history. Has the digital revolution changed the public history discipline? Thanks to characteristics such as flexibility, interactivity and capacity, digital media offer public historians new ways to present history and interact with the public. Wikipedia and the Children of the Lodz Gettho are two interesting public history cases that experiment with the potential of new media for public history. Looking at history online in general and the role public historians play there, some problems appear:
a lack of historical narratives, a lack of self-criticism and digital illiteracy to name three. Based on some online field experience we distill some hands-on lessons concerning narratives, media and the public. Public historians have a lot of work ahead if they want to understand and use the Internet as a new arena for history."

Among the written heritage public or private institutions are likely to receive, the archives of contemporary writers are by their original diversity and length, a challenge for those who are willing to receive and keep them to make them available. The archives and manuscripts of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries writers attest of the big technological changes of our times: from the written pages bound by hand to the mass-produced notebooks such as “Moleskin”, from quills to biros, from typewriters to computers. Today, all these pieces of evidence from a pre-digital era keep our institutions and research teams quite busy. They toil to convert them into digital data by means of two main processes: digitalising them on the one hand, and typing and broadcasting their metadata on the other hand. Cet article propose une réflexion sur les possibilités inédites qu’offre le numérique pour développer de nouvelles méthodes de recherche et de diffusion de données sur l’histoire de l’islam en Afrique de l’Ouest, ainsi que quelques considérations méthodologiques, technologiques et éthiques soulevées par de telles initiatives. Au centre de ces considérations se trouve la Collection Islam Burkina Faso. Ce projet de base de données numérique en libre accès, que j’ai lancé en 2021 et qui est hébergée par les bibliothèques George A. Smathers de l’Université de Floride (UF), contient actuellement plus de 2 500 documents d’archives, articles de la presse généraliste, publications islamiques sous diverses formes et photographies, en plus de 200 références bibliographiques liées à l’islam et aux musulmans du Burkina Faso (https://islam.domains.uflib.ufl.edu/s/bf-fr). Le texte propose également un bref état des lieux des humanités numériques dans le champ des études africanistes et plus spécifiquement sur l’islam.

We seek to elucidate the challenges scholars face when preserving popular culture artifacts that are created in right-to-left oriented languages. Victoria, a graduate student at Stanford University who conducts research on Japanese-language comic books (manga), will share with attendees of #Right2Left how digital manga, in both the original and translated editions, can and does preserve a right-to-left reading orientation. She hopes by showing examples of this practice as performed by both American and Japanese publishers, she will inspire digital humanists to rethink user experience and digitally mediated reading orientation when using content management systems such as Omeka. Melinda is researching Iranian gamers who play World of Warcraft through the frameworks of masculinity, affect, emotion, and sentiment, at the University of Washington. In tandem, she looks at Persian-language interactive media, including video games. She will address at the #Right2Left conference the challenges to preserving Iranian video games through metadata collection. Additionally, she seeks to explain how video games made in Iran are often overlooked in the academy and as such current video game metadata practices do not account for culture and religion ethically, as well as how the Omeka Classic platform is not intuitive to use for right-to-left orientated languages. Through back-to-back lightning talks, our presentations show the challenges we and varying institutions face in creating digital work which preserves the directionality of writing right-to-left in Arabic, Japanese, and Persian script. Current standards practiced in digital platforms, such as Omeka, rely on English whilst only providing a mere language configuration for right-to-left languages. This does not extend to images, and therefore users are forced to click left-to-right when reading right-to-left. This poses a problem when digitally preserving right-to-left orientated materials as it sacrifices accuracy which is detrimental to a fluid user experience. Therefore, we desire to create discourse surrounding issues with cataloging metadata, and broader institutional awareness or lack thereof on the saliency of artifact preservation.

Se trata de un repositorio virtual creado mediante el software Omeka e ideado con dos objetivos fundamentales: la preservación de un patrimonio único y la difusión de sus contenidos para que puedan ser fruto de análisis por parte de la comunidad científica. Mediante este artículo nos proponemos trazar un recorrido por esta herramienta que no solo sirva como presentación sino también como una práctica demostración de su uso y posibilidades; pero, además, detallaremos los principales problemas a los que nos hemos enfrentado en el proceso de adaptar los documentos desde el formato analógico al digital con la modesta intención de que pueda servir de ayuda a investigadores que se encuentren en proyectos similares.

The KRIA internship is an opportunity for students interested in the fields of library science, Scandinavian studies, constitutional law, journalism, or civic movements. The internship will be conducted remotely. Tasks will be performed independently on the student's schedule. Students will meet on Zoom monthly with the Project Director and internship team to discuss ideas and progress. The present study attempt to compare the research output in terms of publications between two
Asian giants India and china in nuclear science and technology for the period 2000 to 2019 as
indexed in web of Science database under different parameters like publications size, mode of
communication, research wise distribution, authorship pattern and collaboration pattern, citation
pattern. The study reveals that India published 8637 research papers while China published
16879 papers which is almost twice of India’s publication. India leads China in terms of average
citation per paper. China shows tremendous growth after 2012. In terms of collaboration,
Germany is at the top with India and USA is at the top with China. Researchers have tendency to
publish their papers in group rather than individual. Contributors from both the countries have
tendency to publish their paper in journal. Bhabha Atomic Research Centre share 37% of the
total output of India’s publication where Chinese Academy of Science shares 33% of the total
output of China in nuclear science and technology.

This article describes the development of an Omeka student project in a Pre-Columbian art history survey class that also acquaints students with digital art history (DAH). The course incorporates daily activities intended to help students create a collaborative Omeka exhibition focused on the Mixtec Codex Zouche-Nuttall (CZN). These activities, which include annotating images, creating metadata for images, discussions of image copyrights and fair use, sourcing images, and assessing online resources, introduce some of the important tools, skills, and methodologies of DAH to students largely unfamiliar with the digital humanities. They also prepare students to create an Omeka exhibition framed around the CZN and comparative images. Both the classroom activities and Omeka project help students to think about digital visual culture, non-linear storytelling, and public art history as well as the opportunities afforded by DAH to shape new narratives about the history of art in the ancient Americas.

Digital Humanities, i.e. the use of digital tools, methods and approaches for research in the disciplines of arts and humanities have become a central part of the intellectual landscape. The online seminar Towards Digital Research of Russia and Russian Jewry offers to discuss the use of Digital Humanities in these fields from various points of view: achievements, challenges and development prospects.

Presentation on the possibilities of developing an in-depth understanding of the digital archive needs of the project and design the archive to suit the purposes of the project using the Omeka platform to ensure its possible inclusion in the SSPS website (hosted by the University of Edinburgh) as a searchable database.”

MORROIS, a digital humanities project in its nascent stages, addresses a series of critical theoretical questions surrounding the use of mapping and other data visualizations in medieval literary studies, while also providing a useful resource to researchers working in the field.

The ultimate goal of MORROIS is to develop a large-scale, open-ended index of place-names found in medieval romance, marking line-by-line instances where a romance explicitly employs geographical terms to describe place, person, or thing.

While these datasets are designed to be projectable across a map, the site should also be seen as both geographic index and gazetteer, allowing users to search by romance, manuscript, language, date, and/or place to find these geographic referents.

Presently, the data (all place names in the Alliterative Morte Arthure, Octavian, and Sir Isumbras) is presented using the Omeka Classic content management system and the Neatline plugin for map display.

Currently, with the assistance of a SSHRC Insight Development Grant, we are migrating the data to a more versatile RDF framework (https://morrois.net/rdf), and expanding our datasets to include all place-names in both the Auchinleck Manuscript (Edinburgh, National Library of Scotland Advocates’ MS 19.2.1) and the Lincoln Thornton Manuscript (Lincoln, Lincoln Cathedral Library MS 91).

This presentation will begin with J. David Bolter and Richard A. Grusin’s definition of remediation to focus on conceptions of digital pedagogy as a form of boundary work. Using student examples in the form of podcasts, infographics, and digital exhibitions (Omeka), I will demonstrate how my college classroom uses digital pedagogy to encourage students to become self-reflexive in their enactment of cognitive and affective experiences, produced by their own compositions. These compositions stretch or cross boundaries through the transparency and/or immediacy that is generated through multimodal composition. Remediation is not a repurposing of one medium in the form of another medium; instead, as Bolter and Grusin argue, remediation is a self-reflexive adoption of one medium by another. As a process, Bolter and Grusin define remediation as “the mediation of mediation;” in other words, “media are continually commenting upon, reproducing and replacing each other, and this process is integral to media.”  Indeed, as a process of reform, the explicit goal of remediation is to refashion or rehabilitate other media. Thus, remediation reinterprets the boundaries between media in a process of transformation, or reformation of reality.
Further, through an analysis of both my students’ compositions and my experience as an instructor in the literature and composition classrooms, my presentation will also look at the limitations of considering multimodal compositions as remediation. Guided by Collin Brooke’s argument that remediation does not quite encompass the ability of new media to invent new forms of mediation, I will demonstrate the implications that this limitation has on my pedagogical practices.  For instance, incorporating blogs in the classroom does not exactly constitute a remediation journal. As a whole, this presentation will use student examples as case studies for innovative uses of digital pedagogy in order to demonstrate how remediation traverses boundaries through self-reflexive expressions produced by multimodal compositions conceived as New (re)Media(ation).

As the field of Digital Archaeology becomes increasingly prevalent, large-scale projects tend to dominate both thinking about and approaches towards the digital landscape. Scholars and students
with smaller budgets and resources are often at a disadvantage; we believe renewed energy should be devoted to exploring the value and integrity of small-scale projects.

This poster presents From Stone to Screen, a multi-disciplinary, collaborative, and open-access digitization project launched in 2012 by the graduate students of the department of Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies at the University of British Columbia. From Stone To Screen is a successful, viable, and tested project that reveals the increasing potential of open-source digital tools for scholars and students with small teams and variable budgets. This initiative is completely student-run and focuses on the digitization of the departmental epigraphic squeeze (an impression of an inscription) and ancient Near Eastern artifact collections. While similar digitization projects exist, From Stone To Screen is unique in its accessibility objectives, its solely student-based administration, and the scanning techniques and subsequent quality of the scanned images, all presented in this poster, and all of which are replicable for squeezes and artifacts obtained from all corners of the globe.

The urban campus type is unique in higher education in that most “campuses” area a mixture of purpose-built and adapted structures that not only serve the institution, but also must interact with the host city. In the course of my research I went about mapping the evolution of the neighborhoods around Temple University and Drexel University in Philadelphia. The first visual phase of my initial project documented the changes as reflected in Sanborn Insurance maps. This work was accomplished the old fashioned way – by hand. The second phase was intended not only to be a public presentation of my sites and some information about them, but it was also intended to serve as an additional outlet for visualizing the changes and additions to these urban campuses, to uncover new relationships and connections between the campuses and the city.  This second phase is on-going.
The process of creating the project began as many Visual Resources databases we are familiar with have in the past - by answering a series of questions related to the desired outcomes, tools available, maintenance, sustainability, and preservation. These questions, the solutions I chose, and those that still need to be addressed will be the topic of this presentation. The digital project was created with an open-source EXHIBIT site using a Google spreadsheet for the data set, images stored in Flickr, and a Google map. This has not been the most elegant of solutions, but it does force one to think in terms of data sets rather than the more comfortable narrative analysis.  And more importantly perhaps, it serves as a pilot project for establishing a series of questions and parameters needed for creating similar projects for my constituents.
