Considering complexity and diversity of data and tasks, there is no single best layout, no single best file format or visualization tool: one size does not fit all. This paper presents the history of Trismegistos Networks (www.trismegistos.org/network), a section of the Trismegistos platform that was designed with a twofold purpose: to make available interactive graphs of networks created for scientific papers, and to visualize relations between entries in the ever-expanding Trismegistos databases. At first, TM Networks used the SigmaExporter plugin developed for Gephi, but since Trismegistos is constantly evolving, a live solution was needed. We therefore developed the TOMATILLO, the Trismegistos Online spaghettiMonster visualization Tool-illo (www.trismegistos.org/network/ tomatillo-demo), which is not only designed to pull data from Trismegistos directly but also offers more advanced filtering options to allow for more user interactivity.

In this blog post, I plot a network using the data from the Innovating Knowledge project. The network consist of 279 nodes corresponding to manuscripts transmitting the most important medieval encyclopaedia, the Etymologiae, and 1047 edges corresponding to innovative features shared by these manuscripts. The resulting graph shows how widespread certain innovations were, and how particular clusters of manuscripts sharing a specific innovation (coloured in the graph) do or do not overlap. The graph consist of 40 separate components, of which one is central.

In the first 20 years of the 21st century, Central American film production has increased exponentially, despite a persistent lack of state support after decades of armed conflict. The relatively recent professionalisation and visibility of the ‘small’ and ‘precarious’ cinemas of Central America has coincided with the development of film festivals. In the ongoing emergence of regionally embedded film cultures, film festivals have assumed particularly mediating and enabling roles, in terms of education, promotion and distribution of local cinemas. These initiatives are contained within traditions that can be traced back to the heyday of New Latin American Cinemas during the 1980s, the Havana Film Festival and the educational ideology of the EICTV Film and Television School in Cuba, which emphasise creative solidarity and collaboration across borders. Since the signing of the last regional Peace Agreements in 1996, events responded to the broader cultural sector’s call to set up networks for cultural production on a regional scale, due to an emphasis on commonality, and the need for a larger audience. Through immersive and reflexive ethnographic fieldwork at film festivals in the region and a network analysis of film production relations, this study illuminates film-cultural developments during the postwar moment, a time especially marked by the active processing of past conflict and trauma through the socially cathartic experience of cinema. This results in a threefold thematic analysis of respectively film festivals, filmmaking communities and the creative use of the ‘postmemory’ phenomenon in the Central American film landscape. In absence of strong national support structures, film festivals have surfaced as multipurpose interfaces that facilitate the exhibition of Central American films, the transnational mobilisation and networking of film professionals, and the mediation of a conflicted past. Against economic, social and political odds, filmmakers in Central America share a common energy to strengthen and expand the region’s small cinemas for both cultural and economic reasons.

GEOMI (Geometry for Maximum Insight) is a visual analytic tool for the visualisation and analysis of
large and complex networkssuch as social networks and biological networks.Such visual analytic tools
involve taking advantage of the graphics capabilities of computers to support analysis of network structure.
More specifically, GEOMI supports interactive three dimensional visualisation and analysis of large and
complex networks.Using GEOMI we can visually explore such networks and discover patterns and trends
to provide critical insights. GEOMI is at the cutting edge of a new generation of visual analytic tools that
combine network visualisation techniques with network analysis methods.

Este estudo procura identificar posicionamentos identitários do rap português, e perceber como estes se transpuseram para a internet, assim como se configuram as comunidades online relacionadas ao movimento cultural na rede. Utilizamos as músicas de rappers para, através do seu discurso, traçar as temáticas abordadas e entender seus contextos. Mais tarde procuramos mapear as páginas e grupos generalistas de Facebook sobre hip-hop português, para que pudéssemos compreender o enquadramento e a formação das comunidades online.
A dissertação está dividida em seis capítulos. O primeiro traça a criação e popularização da internet, expondo o conceito de Sociedade em Rede no processo. No capítulo dois caraterizamos a noção de comunidade imaginada e comunidade online. O terceiro capítulo contextualiza a formação do movimento cultural hip-hop, os seus principais elementos e atributos. No capítulo quatro passamos para a compreensão desta corrente urbana em Portugal, definindo os aspetos que a nacionalizam e os atributos identitários num momento anterior à popularização e da migração em massa para a internet. O quinto capítulo analisa as caraterísticas do rap português na internet, enquanto o sexto estende essa pesquisa para mapear e perceber a formação de comunidades online nas páginas e grupos generalistas de Facebook sobre hip-hop.

This study aims to identify the identity positioning of Portuguese rap, and to understand how they have transposed themselves to the internet, as well as the configuration of the online communities related to the cultural movement on the web. We use the songs of rappers to, through their discourse, draw up the themes addressed and to understand their contexts. Later we try to map the generalist pages and groups on Facebook about Portuguese hip-hop, so that we can understand the framing and the formation of online communities. 
The dissertation is divided into six chapters. The first traces the creation and popularization of the internet, exposing the concept of Network Society in the process. In chapter two we characterize the notion of imagined community and online community. The third chapter contextualizes the formation of the hip-hop cultural movement, its main elements and attributes. In chapter four we move on to the understanding of this urban current in Portugal, defining the aspects that nationalize it and the identity attributes in a moment prior to popularization and mass migration to the internet. The fifth chapter analyzes the characteristics of Portuguese rap on the internet, while the sixth one extends this research to map and perceive the formation of online communities in Facebook's generalist pages and groups on hip-hop.

Gephi is an open source software for graph and network
analysis. It uses a 3D render engine to display large
networks in real-time and to speed up the exploration.
A flexible and multi-task architecture brings new possibilities
to work with complex data sets and produce
valuable visual results. We present several key features
of Gephi in the context of interactive exploration and
interpretation of networks. It provides easy and broad
access to network data and allows for spatializing, filtering,
navigating, manipulating and clustering. Finally,
by presenting dynamic features of Gephi, we highlight
key aspects of dynamic network visualization.

In this paper we address the problem of finding the best viewpoints for three-dimensional straight-line graph drawings. We define goodness in terms of preserving the relational structure of the graph, and develop two continuous measures of goodness under orthographic parallel projection. We develop Voronoi variants to find the best viewpoints under these measures, and present results on the complexity of these diagrams.

The widespread interest in digital humanities (DH) has given rise to a lively discussion about the role of technology in undergraduate classrooms. This article discusses the author's own experience designing and teaching two DH courses in a liberal arts college in North America and offers advice to others who wish to attempt similar courses. The different designs of these two courses serve to demonstrate different ways of tailoring pedagogical objectives and strategies according to the needs and readiness of different student audiences. Both courses illustrate how the infusion of technology into liberal arts programs advances student-centered learning and promotes the teaching of discipline-specific knowledge and critical thinking skills. They underscore the importance of blending technical instruction with methodological reflections and carefully scaffolding course content and activities.

This paper contributes to an ongoing debate in International Political Economy about the appropriateness of globalization, regionalization and macroeconomic imbalance theory by identifying quantitative estimates for all three tendencies from world trade data. This is achieved with a series of gravity models enhanced stepwise by the mapping of the estimation errors of a given model on representations of the overall structure of trade. This not only allows the identification of imperfections in a given model but also permits the further improvement of the models since any systematic regional organization in the error-terms can be identified. The results of the most elaborated model indicate that single factor explanations of global economic integration are presumably misleading. Instead, each of three explanations captures only part of the ongoing changes, as they can be identified under a comparative static perspective from world trade data.

We consider the problem of partitioning a directed acyclic
graph into layers such that all edges point unidirectionally. We perform an experimental analysis of some of the existing layering algorithms and then propose a new algorithm that is more realistic in the sense that it is possible to incorporate specific information about node and edge widths into the algorithm. The goal is to minimize the total sum of edge
spans subject to dimension constraints on the drawing. We also present some preliminary results from experiments we have conducted using our layering algorithm on over 5900 example directed acyclic graphs.

This article explores whether and how network visualization can benefit philological and historical-linguistic study. This is illustrated with a corpus-based investigation of scribes' language use in a lemmatized and morphologically annotated corpus of documentary Latin (Late Latin Charter Treebank, LLCT2). We extract four continuous linguistic variables from LLCT2 and utilize a gradient colour palette in Gephi to visualize the variable values as node attributes in a trimodal network which consists of the documents, writers, and writing locations underlying the same corpus. We call this network the "LLCT2 network". The geographical coordinates of the location nodes form an approximate map, which allows for drawing geographical conclusions. The linguistic variables are examined both separately and as a sum variable, and the visualizations presented as static images and as interactive Sigma.js visualizations. The variables represent different domains of language competence of scribes who learnt written Latin practically as a second language. The results show that the network visualization of linguistic features helps in observing patterns which support linguistic-philological argumentation and which risk passing unnoticed with traditional methods. However, the approach is subject to the same limitations as all visualization techniques: the human eye can only perceive a certain, relatively small amount of information at a time.

This paper examines approaches to the visualisation of ‘invisible’ communications networks. It situates network visualisation as a critical design exercise, and explores how community artists might use such a practice to develop telematic art projects – works that use communications networks as their medium. The paper’s hypotheses are grounded in the Australian community media arts field, but could be applied to other
collaborative contexts.

We introduce a force-directed algorithm, called Sync-and-Burst, which falls into the category of classical force-directed graph drawing algorithms. A distinct feature in Sync-and-Burst is the use of simplified forces of attraction and repulsion whose magnitude does not depend on the distance between vertices. Instead, magnitudes are uniform throughout the graph at each iteration and monotonically increase as the number of iterations grows. The Sync-and-Burst layouts are always circular in shape with relatively even distribution of vertices throughout the drawing area. We demonstrate that aesthetically pleasing layouts are achieved in O(n) iterations.

We describe a novel approach to visualize bibliographic networks that facilitates the simultaneous identification of clusters (e.g., topic areas) and prominent entities (e.g., surveys or landmark papers). While employing the landscape metaphor proposed in several earlier works, we introduce new means to determine relevant parameters of the landscape.
