У книзі опубліковано архівні документи з літерної справи комуністичних спецслужб «Міллі-Фірка» про історію кримськотатарського національного руху в 1917–1920 рр. Протоколи Курултаю, відомості, зібрані слідчою комісією Кримського Татарського Парламенту весною 1918 р., чекістські переклади кримськотатарських документів та інші свідчення, які розкривають складний перебіг трансформаційних процесів Криму періоду війн та революцій. Документальну частину доповнює історико-аналітичне дослідження про Кримськотатарський національний рух.

A fifth of the 800 individuals in the 1979 top secret KGB wanted list had been sentenced to death in absentia, apparently in punishment for defecting. Of the death sentences recorded in the list, more than 80 per cent were handed down in the 1950s, with a sharp decline after that.

У книзі опубліковані документи з «архівів КҐБ». Вони охоплюють період від початку будівництва ЧАЕС до введення в експлуатацію об'єкту «Укриття» («Саркофаг») після Чорнобильської катастрофи — тобто з 1970-х років до листопада 1986 року. Свідчення, зібрані у виданні, відображають перебіг будівництва, розслідування причин аварії 26 квітня 1986 року та перші місяці ліквідації її наслідків через призму діяльності радянських спецслужб. Відтак численні повідомлення про недоліки будівництва, можливі диверсії, донесення від агентів та інформування про інші можливі небезпеки на ЧАЕС стали наскрізною темою книги.

By use of Soviet interrogation protocols and captured German "trophy documents" the organization of manpower in Treblinka II can be described with precision. The rationalized rotation of the guards, organized into three platoons, ensured that security during unloading of transports was sufficient to prevent loss of control over the doomed Jews, and also that every man assigned to Treblinka II eventually rotated through every duty post in the camp.

The article deals with the origins of the deportation operation “Zapad” (“West”) in 1947. In particular, the author analyzed the practice of forced evictions of the population of Western Ukraine, which supported the Ukrainian liberation movement, both in the format of conducting a separate operation (May 22, 1941), and in the form of everyday Chekist work in 1944-1947. The deportation campaign was an important element of the counterinsurgency and was regulated by a number of normative acts both at the Soviet Union and at the Republican levels. The analysis of the decisions of the communist special services gives an opportunity to show how Chekists used their previous experience of such actions in the operation “Zapad”. Also, it shows the peculiarities of the struggle of the communist regime against the Ukrainian liberation movement. The relationship between the deportation operation “Zapad” and the eviction action “Wisła” is analyzed.

В 1951 г. украинские спецслужбы завели совершенно секретное агентурное дело на свидетелей Иеговы, проживающих в западных областях Украинской СССР. Целью операции было «заагентуривание иеговистского подполья», создание легендированного комитета управления свидетелей Иеговы в Украине, перехват каналов связи с зарубежными представительствами и, в конченом итоге, использование Общества Сторожевой башни по линии внешней контрразведки. В результате операции МГБ должно было фактически возглавить организацию свидетелей Иеговы в Советском Союзе. В статье анализируются история и неожиданные последствия секретной операции, вызванные внутренними противоречиями советской системы в отношении религиозного инакомыслия. В контексте
массовых репрессий и депортаций, повлекших тотальную разобщенность свидетелей Иеговы в послевоенный период, советские спецслужбы парадоксальным образом способствовали
восстановлению общин и коммуникации свидетелей Иеговы и стали альтернативной основой, на которой верующие восстанавливали каналы связи друг с другом и восполняли
свои религиозные ресурсы, в том числе печатную литературу. В основу исследования легли недавно рассекреченные документы из архивов Службы безопасности Украины.

The article tells the story of the use and perception of images of violence from an unusual trial against a group of believers, arrested in 1952 in Ukraine. Visitors to an exhibition held in 2019 at the Museum of Art in Cluj-Napoca were invited to look at two sets of photographs: originals and spruced-up copies coming from a recently opened criminal file retrieved from the SBU (former KGB) archive in Kiev. Through the reconstruction of the story of the people who suffered the arrest, we attempt to question the use of research ethics and of heritage in relation to retrieving from archives and displaying violent images of the past. What are the attributes and limits of showing? And what can we learn from the hand at work, the process of actively manipulating the image?

Between 1942 and 1991, law enforcement and security authorities in the Soviet Union employed an evolving set of edicts to prioritize their investigation and prosecution of citizens for individual activities during the German occupation. Particularly during postwar processes, the breath-taking effectiveness with which security organs identified, located and tried citizens under Article 58 of the Soviet criminal code represented the most thorough accountability effort undertaken by any European power. With very few exceptions, the proceedings were closed and secret; after 1960, occasionally the outcome would appear in a short press account. Yet for the government, the pursuit of individual accountability remained of sufficient domestic and international importance to justify commitment of resources, Union-wide, until the demise of the Soviet Union. A representative subset of the many hundreds of thousands of Article 58 prosecutions were the cases brought against Soviet citizens who participated in "Operation Reinhard" (AR), the Nazi's effort to murder all the Jews in Poland. Soviet investigations and trials against men who served in the so-called Trawniki system, named for the training camp where all were inducted, trained, and deployed to AR sites, demonstrate the comprehensiveness of state security's efforts and the potential high value of those records for completing a modern historical reconstruction of the crimes committed during "Reinhard" between 1941 and 1945.

KGB report, circulated to members of the ruling Politburo, regarding the deportation of Alexander Gendler from the Soviet Union. The expulsion was formally done on the order of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR under Article 31.1 which has been removed from Russia's Criminal Code.

The article analyzes the stored and found materials of postal censorship (perlyustraciya korespondencii) to the history of Operation «West» («Zapad»). Checking and censoring letters was one of the important measures of political control of the Soviet intelligence services over the dissemination of information and public response to important events. Despite the pre-war practice of selective re-reading of letters from January 1946, special services continued to provide postal censorship for 100% of the original correspondence in the western regions of the Soviet Ukraine and Belarus, as well as the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian SSRs.

The monthly reports of the work of the postal censorship units show that the preparatory measures for the future deportation became recognized by the population of Western Ukraine since the end of June 1947. The Soviet intelligence services failed to comply with the regime of conspiracy during the organizational phase of Operation «West». The mass deportation had the effect of an information blast in private correspondence. It was found out, that from June 1947 until early 1949, at least 39,605 private letters were seized to stop the spread of information about the mass evictions, which were either destroyed or used for operational purposes by the MGB authorities.

It was researched, that the public resonance directly related to the forced eviction lasted until March 1948, and indirectly, at least until the end of that year. That is, before the beginning of a new phase of the deportation campaign against the «OUN families» sanctioned by the order of the MGB USSR of October 20, 1948.

The stored postal censorship material has considerable informational potential for further studies of the deportation practices of the communist totalitarian regime, especially for the history of everyday life and personal survival strategies during the repression.

Здійснено аналіз збережених та виявлених матеріалів перлюстрації кореспонденції до історії операції «Захід». Перевірка та цензурування листів були важливим заходом політичного контролю радянських спецслужб над поширенням інформації та встановленням реакції суспільства на важливі події. Поп ри те, що від січня 1946 р. було відновлено довоєнну практику вибіркового перечитування листів, для західних областей радянських України та Білорусі, а також Литовської, Латвійської та Естонської РСР продовжували перлюструвати 100% вихідної кореспонденції. Встановлено, що про підготовчі заходи майбутньої депортації населенню Західної України стало відомо з кінця червня 1947 р. Радянським спецслужбам не вдалося дотриматися режиму конспірації під час організаційного етапу операції «Захід». Проведення масової депортації спричинило ефект інформаційного вибуху в приватному листуванні. З'ясовано, що від червня 1947 р. і до початку 1949 р. із метою зупинення поширення відомостей про масові виселення конфісковано щонайменше 39 605 приватних листів, які були або знищені, або використані з оперативною метою органами МДБ. Досліджено, що суспільний резонанс, безпосередньо пов'язаний із висе-ленням, тривав до березня 1948 р. включно, а опосередковано - щонайменше до кінця того ж року. Тобто, до початку нового етапу депортаційної кампанії проти «сімей оунівців», санкціонованого наказом МДБ СРСР від 20 жовтня 1948 р. Збережені матеріали перлюстрації кореспонденції містять значний інформаційний потенціал для подальших досліджень депортаційних практик комуністичного тоталітарного режиму, особливо для історії повсякдення та особис тих стратегій виживання в часи репресій.

В статье обсуждается тема восприятия и использования в музейном пространстве изображений государственного насилия. В центре внимания — история одного необычного уголовного дела 1952 года, когда группа верующих из украинских сел была осуждена как члены «церковно-монархической антисоветской подпольной организации “Истинно-православной церкви”». Фотографии из этого уголовного дела были представлены на выставке в 2019 году в Румынии. Посетителям было предложено посмотреть на два варианта фотографий арестованных верующих: оригиналы и их копии, отредактированные оперативниками. Реконструируя долгую историю архивного дела, авторы пытаются показать, как по-разному могут прочитываться архивные фотографии и тексты, и как они, становясь частью музейного пространства, обретают новый потенциал в формировании исторической памяти. В статье обсуждается вопрос трансформации травматического прошлого (многие участники которого еще живы) в культурное и историческое наследие, а также то, как эти «трудные» формы культурного наследия порождают новые смыслы и создают новые пласты исторической памяти.

Здійснено аналіз інформаційного потенціалу фондів Галузевого держав-ного архіву СБУ для подальших досліджень операції «Захід». Виокремлено групи фондів та справ, котрі містять дані про передумови, перебіг та резуль-тати масової депортації жовтня 1947 р. Виявлено та прокоментовано джерела, які допоможуть дослідити операцію «Захід» у ширшому контексті радянських депортацій з території Західної України у 1944-1952 рр.
The information potential of the Branch State Archives of the Security Service of Ukraine Collections for further research of Operation «West» was analyzed. Groups of fonds and cases were identified, containing data on the preconditions, the course and the results of mass deportation in October 1947. The sources that will help investigate Operation West in the broader context of Soviet deportations from Western Ukraine in 1944-1952 have been identified and commented on.

Since the 1920s, Soviet intelligence and counterintelligence followed a concept of an ‘unending covert war’ against the hostile international environment and cultivated a sophisticated operational theory aimed at winning that new type of conflict. Equipped with these advanced intellectual achievements, Soviet special services secured their status as the Kremlin’s principal strategic tool, exalted over the military. By drawing on new discoveries from the former Soviet archives and a thorough rereading of secondary sources, this article discusses this phenomenon and its implications in both Soviet and post- Soviet times, and distils theoretical lessons for Strategic Culture theory.
