Feminist Translation

Male dominated fields suppress the visibility of women and form a patriarchal system that only benefit men. This system also affects the area of translation. In translations, encountering sexist language is common. To show that patriarchal language is degrading and misogynistic, some translators started to work on not only the translation itself but also on correcting the problematic language and concepts. These feminist translators make women’s voice visible in translations by adopting certain strategies. Emek Ergün’s translation of Virgin: The Untouched History (2007) is one of the examples of feminist translation practices in Turkish translations. The translator writes an unusually long preface on how the translation is a feminist one. Ergün also chooses the word “himen” over “kızlık zarı”, which is a conventional usage of the term, while translating “hymen”. Feminist translations of literary works promote feminist movement and give women some space to show that they exist in all the fields that men do. Although practicing feminist translation has been an ongoing act, is it realistic to expect from these translations to contribute to the feminist movement? Is it possible for women to voice their opinions about patriarchal use of language and concepts in translations? This paper will answer these questions by analyzing Emek Ergün’s translation and giving examples of other works to show that it is possible to counter patriarchy through translation.

As a cross-cultural activity, translation is central to feminist praxis. To examine the dynamics of translation, Taiwanese gender politics, and cultural mobility of feminist discourses, I investigate two Chinese translations of The Vagina Monologues published in Taiwan. In the first part of my article, I compare the political and institutional contexts in which the two different Mandarin Chinese translations were produced, discuss how Eve Ensler's play was first introduced to Taiwan in 2000 by Ch'en Ts'ang-to as an initiative against gender-based violence, and explain why it was retranslated by Ting Fan and Ch'iao Se-fen in 2014. In the second part, I draw on select examples from those two translations to analyze how the two groups of translators represent subversive female bodies and sexualities in the Chinese language. By conducting the cross-analysis, I argue that translation, as a nuanced form of feminist activism, facilitates the dissemination and circulation of feminist awareness in cross-cultural encounters.

W monografii zaproponowano model analizy terminograficznej jako odpowiedzi na postulowane w literaturze przedmiotu systematyczne badania metaleksykograficzne. Na dalszych stronach podsumowano wyniki badań ponad 600 słowników specjalistycznych z terminologią angielską i polską za lata 1990-2006. Zawarte w publikacji karty terminograficzne zawierające dane metaleksykograficzne przebadanych słowników umożliwiają przegląd materiału badawczego i jego dalsze wykorzystanie w badaniach. Pracę uzupełniają indeksy: dziedzinowy, według typów słowników, oraz wykazy najdłuższych serii wydawniczych. Dzieki nim użytkownik może np. potwierdzić istnienie słownika w ramach konkrtnej dziedziny i odnaleźć jego dane bibliograficzne.

A tradução tem uma longa história de ser representada por metáforas que foram – e continuam sendo – transformadas consciente e intencionalmente por mulheres feministas na tradução. Metáforas estão presentes nos nossos processos de conhecimento e compreensão do mundo, nos possibilitam identificar as relações de poder – muitas vezes naturalizadas pelas próprias metáforas – e atravessam e constituem nossos processos de subjetivação. Ao reescrever o discurso da tradução por meio de suas metáforas, transformamos o modo como a tradução é compreendida, praticada e também teorizada. Neste texto, elegi um percurso a partir do artigo seminal de Lori Chamberlain, Gender and the Metaphorics of Translation (1988), em diálogo com Metaphors, Women and Translation: from les belles infidèles to la frontera, de Pilar Godayol (2013), que o retoma e desenvolve. Após revistar as metáforas em Chamberlain e Godayol, são discutidas duas metáforas feministas da tradução – o abebé de Oxum (NASCIMENTO DOS SANTOS, 2014) e a “marea” (PALMEIRO, 2020). Entende--se que a representação da tradução em metáforas de movimento, processos e figuras não-gênero centradas pode ser considerada uma “contra-pedagogia da crueldade” (SEGATO, 2018a), uma maneira de superar a dicotomia colonial de gênero das demais metáforas analisadas – dicotomia essa, segundo a filósofa argentina María Lugones (2010), essencial à colonial-modernidade. As metáforas que se valem de movimentos, processos, do “não-humano” dialogam com – e retrucam – a desumanização, a exploração e a dominação impetradas pela colonização e colonialidade.

This paper is informed by feminist translation as theory and practice, in the sense of feminist translation as an extension of feminist writing. It is based on the assumption that the translator's feminist position (or lack of it) influences the translation of a feminist text; and it attempts to answer several questions: What identifies a feminist discourse? What are the intersections between feminist theory and translation studies? Which translation strategies help preserve the feminism of a text? What are the feminist translation strategies that can be adopted in the translation of feminist texts into Arabic? What makes feminist translation a political act? This paper is, therefore, divided into three main parts. The first part discusses the issues related to the translation of feminist discourses and feminist translation strategies. In the second part, the paper addresses various issues related to feminist translation praxis, with particular reference to the intersections between feminist theory and translation studies, as manifested in the notions of visibility, foreignisation and simpatico/simpatica translation. The third part is based on a case study; namely the translation of feminist thought into the Arabic language. The example used here is that of a Reader in Feminist Literary Theory and Criticism published in Arabic, consisting of a selection of articles published in English on various aspects of feminist literary studies. The paper explores the strategies used in translating these articles into Arabic. The paper  ends  with  concluding  remarks  on  feminist  translation  praxis  as  knowledge-production and reflects on feminist translation as a political act, with particular reference to the Egyptian/Arab context.

Este artículo tiene como objetivo dar a conocer la figura literaria de Shimizu Shikin (1868-1933), una de las escritoras más representativas de la denominada «literatura femenina» japonesa de la década de 1890. Activista, ensayista y escritora, Shikin advocó por los derechos de las mujeres a través de la literatura en varias de sus obras, y en medio de la ebullición del movimiento literario genbun itchi, innovó con un estilo directo y natural en la obra El anillo roto (Koware yubiwa, 1891) para sortear las restricciones estilísticas a las que las escritoras de la época estaban sometidas. Este artículo pondrá de manifiesto y analizará, mediante traducciones inéditas al castellano, el contenido reivindicativo y de corte feminista en El anillo roto.

In this interview, Susie Tharu spoke about her personal experiences with the women's movement, her contributions and involvement with the feminist organizations in Hyderabad, and her works from women writing in India (1991) to the Latest Steel Nibs are sprouting (2013).

This paper explores the ways that two transdsiciplines can work together, and benefit from their interdisciplinary roots and approaches for even more fruitful results. While the core of the paper, written by Joan Wallach Scott, focuses on the many difficulties accrued by the Anglo-American concept and term "gender"  and hence its translation into and use in other languages and cultures, the frame of that core essay explores  the many existing and potential connections between gender studies and translation studies.

COURSE DESCRIPTION The course consists of 3 components: theoretical, methodological and practical. First: the students will be introduced to concepts related to gender and translation through an understanding of the intersections between feminism, gender and translation studies. Second: the students will be engaged in a discussion of the challenges and translation strategies involved in translating feminist and gender-oriented texts in the humanities and social sciences, including ethical considerations in translators' interventions. Third: the students will be encouraged to reflect on translators' work from the perspective of feminist translation and gender studies. They will be trained to produce their own " feminist translations " in a process that involves compiling terms and preparing glossaries, including footnotes and/or endnotes, developing and explaining translation strategies (prefaces and introductions), editing and presentation (revision, layout and manuscript submission). At the end of the course the students should be able to identify inaccuracies in the translation of feminist texts and to produce a translation from a feminist/gender perspective.

Abstract – The main aim of this research is to provide an analysis of the Italian translation of the poetry of
Lucia Sánchez Saornil, the only female author of the Spanish Ultraist movement, combining the theory of
poetic translation with gender studies in translation.
The translated poems that I analyze in this article are my own translation of Sánchez Saornil’s work. These
translations are still in progress for a future publication. The stated goal is to find a middle way between the
radical strategies outlined by the Canadian feminist movement during the Eighties (cf. Diaz- Diocaretz 1985,
Hannay 1985 , Chamberlain 1988, 1998 , 1990 Godard, Lotbiniere - Harwod 1991, Von Flotow 1991 1994,
1997, 1998, Simons 1996), and the translation techniques that are required to recreate the features of a poem
without betraying the style and aesthetics of the author (cf. Holmes 1969, 1978, Lefevere techniques 1975,
Popovic 1976 Beaugrande 1978, Etkind 1982, Raffel 1988).
Moreover, I will analyse the perspectives opened by the great feminist challenge in translation, and the role
of literature and translation in the rise of a new sensitivity in the female question.

Já há bastante tempo está consagrada a relação da literatura com a tradução. Trata-se,
inclusive, de uma relação de forte interdependência: se, por um lado, para a tradução,
uma de suas principais fontes textuais é justamente a literatura, para a produção literária, o contato
com traduções representa a possibilidade do encontro com a alteridade – com diferentes
experiências de mundo, culturas, línguas e subjetividades. Assim, os sistemas literários são
enriquecidos pela recepção de traduções, ao passo que a produção literária alimenta a prática
tradutória. Neste simpósio, no entanto, buscamos adicionar outra camada a essa relação: a dos
feminismos. Desde a chamada virada cultural, os Estudos da Tradução vêm acolhendo reflexões e
debates sobre a relação da tradução com perspectivas, sujeitos e objetos por muito tempo
invisibilizados e invisibilizadas. Como consequência, a tradução deixou de ser vista
exclusivamente como uma operação linguística de decodificação/codificação para ser entendida,
estudada e praticada como uma complexa atividade comunicativa, dinâmica, guiada por fins
predeterminados e, portanto, nunca neutra, mas sempre atravessada por ideologias e relações de
poder. Com o impulso das teorias pósestruturalistas, desconstrutivistas, decoloniais –
entre outras – e com a influência da força dos movimentos sociais, a tradução também passou a
ser estudada a partir de seu potencial como ferramenta em lutas políticas, como intermediadora cultural, como atividade éticoideológica. Dessa forma a reflexão do campo ampliou o debate normativo e prescritivo sobre “como” traduzir, adicionando questões como: quem é traduzido? Quem traduz? Por que se traduz? De onde e para onde se traduz? Foi nesse contexto de expansão do paradigma teórico-metodológico da tradução que se desenvolveram – e seguem em desenvolvimento – reflexões feministas no campo da tradução, centradas nas desiguais relações de poder mantidas por práticas tradutórias em função das múltiplas opressões de gênero. De teóricas da chamada escola canadense à mais recente Tradutologia Feminista Transnacional, os Estudos da Tradução vêm se dedicando à observação de questões – incluindo opressões, lutas e celebrações – de gênero em contextos de tradução (Fonseca et al. 2020). Inicialmente centrado na denúncia sobre a linguagem sexista empregada na produção escrita e tradutória, com foco na sua subversão, o debate foi, aos poucos, ampliando-se para dar conta de novas demandas da luta contra a opressão de
gênero – como apontam Castro e Spoturno (2020, p. 13), os enfoques feministas da tradução se
adaptaram para “responder a novas e diferentes materializações do patriarcado e outros sistemas
de opressão”. Assim, em diálogo com o paradigma da interseccionalidade, outras variáveis identitárias
(como raça, classe, contextos geopolíticos) passaram a ser observadas em sua relação com a de
gênero e, assim, expandiram o debate da tradução feminista. Nesse campo, tem espaço evidente e
essencial a literatura: a tradução literária é um dos campos mais frutíferos para o debate feminista na
medida em que o texto literário é também um meio de expressão subjetiva, política, cultural, decolonial e, portanto, é um potencial instrumento de reivindicação de justiça social. Como resultado,
assistimos, nos últimos anos, a um aumento importante de pesquisas que, por exemplo, destacam a polifonia no texto traduzido, incluindo a valorização da voz e da subjetividade da tradutora;
que denunciam e criticam traduções e/ou estratégias tradutórias que reproduzem os efeitos
das opressões de gênero em suas intersecções com outras variáveis; que celebram a produção literária de mulheres em contextos de tradução, com sua introdução em novos públicos leitores; que
questionam o cânone literário reprodutor das relações de poder a partir da possibilidade de revertê-lo pela tradução; entre outros. Trata-se, em suma, de, por meio da tradução e de um posicionamento ético-político alinhado com as lutas feministas, buscar compensar desigualdades, denunciar ausências e preencher lacunas históricas que ainda sustentam, na literatura e na sua difusão por meio da tradução, desigualdades sociais importantes. Levando isso em consideração, este simpósio convida a proposição de trabalhos que discutam as múltiplas possibilidades de relação da tradução literária com os feminismos, bem como os estudos da tradução feminista. Trata-se, assim, de reunir discussões que proponham repensar a cartografia da tradução literária (Sánchez, 2019) levando em conta a possibilidade de reverter fluxos epistemológicos, tradutórios e literários que ainda sustentam opressões de gênero. Ao mesmo tempo,é uma oportunidade de celebrar esforços que venham sendo realizados no sentido da reversão da violência epistêmica (Spivak, 1993), também perpetuada por meio da literatura e de sua tradução, que mantém, como consequência da opressão de gênero, diversas vozes literárias em silêncio.

The interaction between gender and translation has started with the influence of cultural studies on many different disciplines and particularly the cultural turn, experienced in translation studies in addition to the increasing awareness on the interdisciplinary nature of the field itself. In this article I explore the concept of feminist translation—briefly, the use of language as a tool for a critique of patriarchal language—through the examples of feminist translation in Turkey. In so doing I focus on two feminist texts: SCUM Manifesto by Valerie Solanas and Virgin: The Untouched History by Hanne Blank, and their feminist translations into Turkish: Erkek Doğrama Cemiyeti Manifestosu by Ayşe Düzkan and Bekâretin El Değmemiş Tarihi by Emek Ergün. The translation strategies preferred by these translators and the use of paratexts overlap the feminist translation strategies, which have been introduced by Luise von Flotow. Feminist translators in this context have " womanhandled " the texts and made a contribution to both the contemporary feminist translation theory and practice, and feminist movement in Turkey.

Em 29 de maio de 1851, Sojourner Truth (1797-1883), mulher negra feminista, abolicionista e defensora dos direitos das mulheres, proferiu um impactante discurso na Convenção pelos Direitos das Mulheres em Akron, Ohio, nos Estados Unidos.
No mês seguinte, em 21 de junho de 1851, o discurso foi transcrito e publicado no jornal Anti-Slavery Bugle por Marius Robinson, jornalista que estava na plateia e amigo de Truth. Juntos revisaram o texto.
Doze anos depois, em 23 de abril de 1863, outra versão do discurso aparece publicada em The New York Independent por Frances Gage. Gage faz alterações significativas à primeira versão, acrescentando marcas do sotaque do inglês falado pelos negros do sul dos Estados Unidos: "Ain't I a woman" -, sotaque esse que Sojourner Truth não tinha, pois ela não era do sul e, mas de uma região que falava holandês.
O reflexo da versão de Gage sobre a biografia de Sojourner Truth é uma imagem estereotipada da fala de uma mulher negra. Leituras de "Ain't I a woman?" não raro provocam risos.
Já a versão original do Anti-Slavery Bugle, traduz a figura de uma mulher de extrema inteligência e agudez intelectual, reconhecida por sua oratória, o que é coerente com seu papel de importante pregadora religiosa.

Elena Ferrante has long acknowledged the influence of Alba de Céspedes’ 1949 novel Dalla parte di lei on her writing, particularly in terms of conceiving female characters. In Ferrante’s newest novel, La vita bugiarda degli adulti, the prominent theme of queer friendship between young women echoes and reconfigures elements from Dalla parte di lei. This article delves into the capacious queer relationality depicted in both novels, tracing the presence of transmasculinity and feminist re-writing as key elements in both. Situating the two novels’ representations of women’s intimacy in their socio-literary contexts, I analyze the ways in which they utilize models like the «fiamma», romantic friendship, sisterhood, and female husbands. Neither author identifies as lesbian or queer; thus my close reading of the frankly sexual and deeply romantic scenes between female characters seeks not to assign the writers or their books to a category, but rather to elaborate the queer dimensions of relationality that they explore. Ultimately, I propose that a significant part of what makes these queer, lesbian, and transmasculine representations possible is a shared feminist project of reading, writing, and rewriting from one’s own perspective: dalla parte di lei. In this sense, what Ferrante’s narrator-protagonist Giovanna owes to de Céspedes’ narrator-protagonist Alessandra is not only the possibility of a queer life and a feminist voice, but the potential for narrating queer feminist experience as relational.

This article, published in Rosalía 21, a collection of studies published by Edicións Xerais de Galicia in 2009 and edited by Anxo Angueira, analises the existing English translations of Rosalía de Castro's work, particularly from a feminist perspective.

Desde finales del siglo XX hemos sido testigos de una
importante transformación en los estudios de traducción
que nos ha hecho orientarnos a aspectos ideológicos
que antes habían pasado desapercibidos. Gracias a
este cambio tan significativo, nos hemos percatado de
que la hegemonía cultural tiene un papel decisivo en
la traducción y de que esta implica inevitablemente un
examen de las relaciones de poder que aparecen en los
textos (Álvarez y Vidal 1996: 1).
En este artículo indagaremos en cómo estos cambios
se han visto favorecidos por la influencia de numerosas
traductólogas feministas, como Susan Bassnett,
Gayatri Spivak y África Vidal, quienes han reclamado
una traducción más inclusiva. Sin embargo, a pesar
del reconocido itinerario de sus investigaciones y
sus relevantes resultados, si lo comparamos con
las traducciones de cuatro obras literarias que son
relevantes para los estudios de género, observamos
que, en líneas generales, la teoría todavía no se está
llevando a la práctica.

The aim of this paper is to present the results of the translation review of L ‘Astragale, a French novel first published in 1965. The review takes as a starting point the ideas and reflections of the Canadian school of feminist translation as well as the debate and the various publications related to this type of translation in Spain over the last years.This is not just any novel as it belongs to the so-called, by the young author Albertine Sarrazin,
“autobiographical” novel, whose work became really popular throughout the sixties in both, France and Spain. It is important to highlight the fact that its first translation to Spanish was published in 1966, underpinning the interest to disseminate such an innovative writing by female authors in a time when this type of writing was practically inexistent in Spain.

A tradução no Brasil foi sempre um ofício de homens (PAES, 1990) e este fato é comprovado pela história e pelo apagamento de figuras femininas na narrativa historiográfica patriarcal (WYLER, 2003) ainda vigente no senso comum. Se a recente História das Mulheres (DEL PRIORE, PINSKY, 2013; PINSKY, PEDRO, 2016) vem reivindicando o papel feminino e mostrando sua importância para a formação dos Estados-Nações, os Estudos Feministas (HIRATA, LABORIE, LE DOARÉ, SENOTIER, 2009) solicitam um olhar epistemológico para esse tipo de pesquisa. Apoiando-se tanto na disciplina História quanto na epistemologia feminista, os Estudos de Tradução, disciplina transdisciplinar, têm trazido novas indagações para as relações entre tradução e mulheridade – termo que pretende abarcar o conceito de mulher para além do conceito biológico (DEJOURS, 2010). Assim, surgem as perguntas: Quem são as tradutoras? Quais são seus nomes? O que traduzem? Como traduzem? Para quem traduzem? De onde traduzem? Existe uma voz

'Global English' is often cited as a notorious neo-colonial, hegemonic threat to other cultures, languages and the circulation of ideas. However, it seems unavoidable in transnational political work. Is it? This article engages with this and other challenges in regard to transnational feminist translation studies.

La intenció d'aquest treball és donar perspectiva a les veus femenines de la pel·lícula Pulp Fiction. Com unes figures tan rellevants al cinema de l'autor ocupen únicament el 21,1% del diàleg total de la pel·lícula? Què diuen? Com ho diuen? En quin context ho diuen?

El que persegueix el meu treball és una anàlisi prèvia del text original per a poder prendre unes decisions des d'una perspectiva més feminista en la seua traducció.

The circulation of knowledge and representations of non-normative sexualities from the West to the Sinophone world and within Chinese-speaking communities has been an interculturally sensitive issue. In this chapter, I examine various attempts at sinicizing Western/Euro-American non-normative sexualities in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. In the first part of the chapter, I offer an overview of scholarship on male homoeroticism in pre-modern China, which sets the foundation for ensuing investigations into translating Western/Euro-American non-normative sexualities. In the second part, I examine critical issues and current contributions in historicizing and scrutinizing translational discourses of contested sexualities. By highlighting the question of translation, I discuss how the Sinophone cultures have been tackling old and new concepts, such as homosexuality, gay, lesbian, and queer, which have been used to refer to contested sexualities in the Western/Euro-American discourse. In the final part, I envision future directions to advance the field and provide several research questions.

Sonuç olarak, bu yazının merkezinde yer alan çeviri yaklaşımları ile Jacques Derrida’nın Babil Kulesi (1985) başlıklı yazısındaki yazma eylemine ilişkin görüşleri arasında yakın bir ilişki olduğu gözlemlenmiş; çeviri eyleminin, çevirmenleri kaynak ve erek dil, kültür ve metnin boyunduruğundan kurtarıp hiyerarşileri yıkma olanağı yarattığı çıkarımı yapılmıştır.

Esta é uma tradução do prefácio escrito por Patricia Hill Collins para a obra Feminist Translation Studies: Local and Transnational Perspectives (2017). A partir de vivências pessoais e de sua trajetória acadêmica e intelectual, Collins expõe sua perspectiva sobre as relações entre tradução e feminismo. Desse modo sua argumentação é dividida em dois momentos: no primeiro, a pessoa da tradutora como uma mediadora entre línguas, pensamentos, culturas e pessoas é focalizada; e, no segundo, o foco recai sobre como a interpretação do pensamento de uma dada comunidade de mulheres pode ser entendida igualmente como um ato de tradução. Para a autora, a tradução dentro desses dois pontos de vista é uma prática ativista e uma ação de confiança naquela que traduz.

The translation is a phenomenon that takes place in our academic life and in everyday life. This phenomenon has not only facilitating effects on our lives but also its complicated Running Head: FEMINIST TRANSLATION AND SUBJECTIVITY IN TRANSLATION ANALYSIS IN THE CASE OF THE BOOK AWAKENING, WRITTEN BY KATE CHOPIN 1 aspects. One of them is the subject of subjectivity in translation. It is seen in many studies conducted from the past to the present that the product of the translator depends not only on the content but also on their lifestyle, the values they adopted, etc. This study aims to examine whether feminism, which is a movement, and gender makes a difference in the translation of a literary product, and if so, to what extent. When we go into more detail in this research, it is possible to encounter the following question: ''Do the texts translated by male and female translators differ in terms of sexist language?'' To investigate this, I evaluated primary sources in terms of sexist language and subjectivity in detail, and I tried to analyze this in the light of the secondary sources and tertiary sources that have been researched on feminist translation and draw a conclusion(s). My analyses on this path; demonstrated that there is not a complete correlation between gender and translation, but there are strong connections, which vary slightly, between the two previous terms since gender affects our mentality. In conclusion, what mentioned in this study is that gender can sometimes affect translations, although it does not have a completely inclusive effect on the subjectivity factor. Although I emphasize the effect of language on gender equality as much as I can in this study, I think that more studies should be done to understand this issue and to put it into life.
