This paper investigates students' perceptions about the level of importance of the services required in an on-campus student housing facility (SHF), with the aim of providing empirical information that can guide the provision and management of on-campus university SHF services. The paper adopted a survey research strategy. The study is exploratory in nature; a postgraduate residence was selected, and a closed-ended questionnaire was administered to students who are registered residents of the housing facility. Both descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. The study found that security personnel, waste disposal, electricity, internet, fire safety, access control, cleaning, water, fumigation, CCTV, first aid, and room heater were perceived to be more important than services such as; gym equipment, indoor sports equipment, DSTV decoder, phone, receptionist, tuck shop, ATM service, vending machine and lift service. No statistically significant differences of the gender groups and the level of study categories regarding perception of services available and the importance level of services in the SHF were found. Although, several studies have been conducted on SHFs, studies that primarily focuses on the services requirements and prioritisation of the services is lacking. Therefore, the study provides empirical information that could serve as a guide for the provision and management of SHF services for both property investors and university facility and hostel managers. The study further contributes to the knowledge in the area of SHF services requirements by providing empirical information that could serve as a precursor for further studies.

This paper asserts that, despite rhetoric of added value, facilities management suffers a dearth of objectively researched, publicly available information concerning the impact of facilities on businesses at the level of market sectors or individual organizations. The paper aims to correct that situation for United Kingdom higher education institutions. A survey of undergraduates starting university in 2001 confirmed, to high levels of significance, earlier research with the 2000 class. For many institutions, facilities factors, where provided to a high standard, are perceived as having an important influence on students' choice of institution. Year-on-year comparisons show strong agreement at the global level and, where data could be gathered, at the institutional level. The article studied the application of facilities management practice in high rise commercial properties. Convenience sampling technique was used in administering questionnaires to the 60 respondents who responded to the survey. It was found out that the extent of application of facilities management in the subject properties is better described as below average. Similarly, the most frequently tools of facilities management in use and employed in the properties were outsourcing and in-house sourcing. This was influenced by the level of their familiarity with the tools. Planned and Preventive maintenance should be taken regularly in order to enhance the effectiveness of the facilities management and to satisfy both the owner and customers of the organization. This case study about the role of the facilities manager is depicted through two hotel workplace environments: one which views facilities management in a strategic role, and another which views facilities management as a low priority operations position. Themes for in-depth discussion include maintenance workload planning and tracking, the service-profit chain, and the facilities manager as a strategic partner. Discussion and assessment produced from this case study will illustrate the importance of managing a hotel from the perspective of valuing the main capital investment of the firm with the intention of preserving and extending the life of the physical plant.

Purpose – Teams and teamworking has now become a common form of work structure in most organisations, including facilities management. The human interactions which occur when people work together in groups is still problematic. In this study human factors are identified and the purpose of this paper is to establish the level of importance of each factor involving specialised teams within a manufacturing environment. Design/methodology/approach – A quantitative study was undertaken at a number of manufacturing plants which were using the process: team-based cellular manufacturing. Managers, team leaders, and operators involved with manufacturing cells were targeted to evaluate the various human related factors associated with these teams. Findings – From the nine human factors evaluated, three factors: " communication " , " teamwork " , and " training " were identified as being key to the day-today success of team-based cellular manufacturing. Some notable differences were observed when comparing the data between countries. Research limitations/implications – This study adds to the limited research which has been conducted on the human aspects of socio-technical processes. Further work is required to enhance understanding of key human factors. Practical implications – For practitioners involved with manufacturing cells, the study provides an understanding of the key areas towards which attention and resources can be channelled. Originality/value – While the study provides valuable insights into a socio-technical process in manufacturing, the findings are also very useful to management practitioners who are attempting to manage and improve the effectiveness of teams and teamwork.

Management of educational building assets is one of the most complicated factors because it has a bigger number of related and unrelated criterions. Analytic hierarchy process (AHP) as a decision-making technique is widely deal with many decision problems that have bigger number of criterions. This paper proposes AHP method to define the judgment matrix of related and unrelated criterions that is used to calculate the relative weights (RWs) of each criterion. Analytic network process (ANP) was also used to calculate the RWs of the interrelated building categories (architectural, mechanical, and electrical). Such RWs can be used by managers for physical condition assessment of an educational building. The educational building hierarchy are divided into five levels. Each level is then defined in a judgment matrix to calculate its RWs. Then. The consistency of such judgment matrix has been evaluated to ensure that the RWs’ results are acceptable. As concluded in the space level of the building hierarchy, the classroom space type that includes most of the education processes had the highest relative weight (RW=26.76%) followed by the bathrooms (RW=26.14%) and corridors and stairs (RW=25.77%). On the other hand, the cafeteria space type was the least relative weight (RW=1.58%) among all other space types. AHP technique provided an improved approach to calculate the RWs of each criterion af ecting physical condition of educational building in Egypt.

Residential buildings need proper building maintenance management to allow residents living in comfort and building owners to preserve their properties. Apart from ensuring the safety of residents, the aesthetic values of the building can be also preserved. Maintenance priority plays a vital role in enhancing the maintenance management process, especially when the building managers face budget and cost constraints. It has been a challenging task for the decision maker to decide which maintenance work should come first. Many practitioners have been determining maintenance priority in a cursory manner simply based upon biased past experience, subjective or personal evaluation, and conservative decisions, and some even use a specific building maintenance manual by default without making a deliberated choice. Thus, this research seeks to investigate the differences between perspective and actual practice of practitioners in prioritising the maintenance of building facilities and services. A questionnaire survey was conducted among building maintenance personnel for high-rise residential buildings in Peninsular Malaysia with 321 valid questionnaire responses. Wilcoxon signed-rank test was performed to examine the difference between practitioners' perspective and actual practice towards maintenance priority of building facilities and services. The findings revealed that facilities that deal with daily necessities and safety such as power supply, water supply, lift system, and fire protection system were ranked higher in both practitioners' perspective and actual practice compared to other facilities and services. It is also proven that there is a significant difference between practitioners' perspective and actual practice towards all building facilities and services.

This Impact Report identifies and summarises the diverse impacts, resulting from the £500m of UK funding of Science and Technology in 2013, using numerous quantitative metrics and short case study extracts.  It shows how the varied impacts of a national science and technology organization and its many funded programmes can be annually identified, captured, tracked, and summarised in a public document.

The report was produced for, and by, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) -  the UK Research Council responsible for funding: (1) all UK astronomy, particle and nuclear physics research, (2) related UK science and technology facilities (e.g. as Harwell and Daresbury), (3) the UK contribution to international science (e.g. CERN, international telescopes and space missions), (4) innovation and business spin-off programmes, and (5) UK public engagement activities.

The Report was co-researched and co-authored by the STFC Impact Team, including myself while Impact Evaluation Manager in 2013, with Dr. Claire Dougan-McCallie (lead author/Head of Impact) and Jenny Beard, with additional input from senior managers, and many data and case study contributions from other key managers across STFC.

Varied key impacts are identified and reported including:

• Research amongst the best (by citation impact) in astronomy, nuclear and particle physics.
• Supported research of 226 Principal Investigators in 70 universities, led to 1,100 peer-reviewed papers in 2012.
• Facilities (the Diamond Light Source, ISIS and CLF) were used in 2012/13 by over 4,200 unique users , in over 2,400 experiments, producing over 1,000 papers in peer-reviewed journals.

• Technology from CERN benefited the UK economy by over £100 billion every year.
• Funding the development of the UK’s space, internet and computer animation industries, returned over £500 billion to the UK economy per annum.
• Funded Innovation Campuses hosted over 230 enterprises and supported over 5,000 jobs.
• UK industry won £43 million in contracts from the international subscriptions funded, and had accumulated a total of £150 million since 2005.

• Funded research inspired future generations to study STEM subjects, attracting 90% of UK undergraduates to study physics, funded 782 PhD students  and 16,800 student training days.
• Between 2009 to 2012 public engagement programmes engaged people on 58 million occasions, with 2 million people engaged in face-to-face activities in 2013 alone.

This paper considers the renovation of hotels in the context of facilities management (FM). It evaluates a study carried out in Egypt into the attitudes of hotel general managers about the importance attached to hotel renovation and refurbishment. The findings show that whilst hotel managers express a belief in the importance of hotel renovation, there is little evidence of strategic thought in the renovation process. Instead, the focus appears to be on the "softer" customer satisfaction aspects of hotel management. There is scope for a more strategic view of FM among hotel managers and owners

Performance Measurement System (PMS) is an effective performance measurement tool and technique that is being widely implemented in the global industries. Literature has suggested the significant contributions of its implementation in enhancing the strategic service delivery and performance. However, there is little study undertaken to explore the PMS implementation in Facilities Management (FM) industry, particularly focusing on Malaysia. This study explores the PMS practice among FM practitioners and their knowledge in Performance Measurement (PM) generally. Findings from this study also proposed the 20 contributing factors that the FM practitioners believed are the barriers in implementing PMS. This research also suggests the future research opportunities in developing a PMS framework that can be used as guidance for FM service delivery in Malaysia.

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to examine degree of job satisfaction of the University of Athen’s (UOA) administrative staff, specifically regarding the workplace and its impact on their productivity. Design/methodology/approach – Questionnaires were distributed to 160 administrative personnel of the UOA. The study entails descriptive analysis, independent samples t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlations (two-tailed) and regression analysis of the data collected. Findings – The results indicate that the UOA’s administrative staff is dissatisfied with most aspects of their workplace, which is characterized by an inability to encourage and support new forms of office work. This scenario was also found to have a negative effect on productivity. In addition, regression analysis showed that satisfaction with the workplace is a significant predictor of employee productivity. Purpose-This study aims to assess the satisfaction of users with outsourced facility management (FM) services in multi-tenant shopping malls (SMs) in Accra, Ghana. Design/methodology/approach-This study measured user satisfaction (US) with 15 FM services using the perception of internal users about the attitude and courtesy of the personnel who provide the services, the reliability of the services, their responsiveness and their competence. This study used survey data from 117 users who have actively used these services for at least 12 months using structured questionnaires. The data was descriptively analysed to assess the perceived satisfaction of the users in five SMs. Findings-The results showed that users were satisfied with the delivery of all 15 services (each had a mean above 3.0 which is the benchmark satisfaction point). The findings also showed high levels of service quality with the four dimensions of satisfaction investigated. Originality/value-This study demonstrates US with outsourced FM services for multi-tenant SMs in Ghana. Practically, property owners, potential investors and other stakeholders can rely on the findings for effective FM strategy decision-making. Facility managers can rely on these findings to review their service delivery for the better.

Facilities management is an integrated approach to operate, maintain, improve, and adapt the buildings and facilities of an organisation in order to support the core business operations of that organisation. Due to the lack of knowledge and skill in maintenance-related matters, the organisation and client rely on the facilities manager to take care of their building most of the time. However, the facilities management of the buildings has been unprofessionally applied by the facilities managers, which subsequently triggered negative impacts to the building services and facilities. Lack of manager's commitment is also questioned because of the salary payment. Therefore, this paper seeks to examine the relationship between the competency of facilities manager and maintenance performance; and investigate the relationship manager's salary and manager's commitment through questionnaire survey and interview. The findings indicate that there are significant relationship between manager's competency and maintenance performance; as well as manager's salary and manager's commitment. The study concludes that actions should be taken in order to improve the competency and commitment of facilities managers constantly, and hence enhance the maintenance performance.

The performance of facilities in the school environment has an impact on student learning performance. Towards improving the facilities performance, the identification of the relevant indicators for school facilities is necessary. This paper presents the initial study of identifying the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the school classroom facilities. It begins with the identification of the key performance indicators (KPIs) for classroom facilities based on general indicators gathered from the literature review. Apart of discussion on questionnaire development, it discusses the results of the survey. Respondents' backgrounds, the descriptive analysis results regarding the students' opinions of classroom facilities, and the KPI ranking for classroom facilities are among the main focus of the analysis. These KPIs could be used as a guide to improve the FM performance in schools. An improvement in FM performance will, in turn, enhance the performance of the facilities provided.

Crossrail has realized the benefits of utilising the BIM process for their Mega-Project and the efficiency of working in a collaborative environment. In 2008, detailed collaborative working across the 25 design teams commenced. This collaborative work formed part of the projects mandatory contract process. This report focusses on highlighting the works undertaken, working in a BIM environment from conceptual stages through to challenges faced and facilities management.

Crossrail will be the first project in the European transportation infrastructure to use the BIM environment and aims at exploiting the opportunities BIM has to deliver the new rail system. The main achievement would be for Crossrail to become the first major infrastructure project which realises BIM and drive the design innovation in the construction industry.

Health club facilities represent a physical space for an industry that is centric to human health and fitness, serving various societal dimensions such as cultural, economic, and social aspects on the individual and the national levels. This research conducts an indicative post occupancy evaluation (POE), for assessing the provision of post-pandemic precautionary measures and management strategies, in health club facilities. The research activities comprised a review of literature, a walkthrough for assessing a case study health club facility, where precautionary measures were investigated to ascertain its preparedness. Observations of trainers and administrative staff were collected, to derive recommendations that ensure sustainable operation in response to the challenges set by COVID-19 on continuity of health club facilities. The research concludes with remarks to propose recommendations and future research directions. The research initiates a topic that is overlooked in the literature of sports management domain. This research serves to raise awareness among designers and managers of health club facilities on the precautionary measures of protecting health club facilities against safety and health risks of COVID-19, from different regional perspectives. This is by tackling an identified contextual gap on health club facilities in the relevant literature.

Building Information Management (BIM) models are transforming how buildings are designed and constructed, and can facilitate multi-disciplinary coordination, and integrate 3D design, analysis, cost estimating, and construction scheduling. By extending the model into the post-occupancy period, BIM models can be used to support Facilities Management and Building Operations, and offer a consolidated interface for information regarding all aspects of building operational performance. Four key challenges must be overcome to develop BIM models suitable for Sustainable Operations management: (1) identification of critical information required to inform Operational decisions, (3) the high level of effort to create new or modify existing BIM models for the building(s), (2) the management of information transfer between real-time operations and monitoring systems and the BIM model, and (4) the handling of uncertainty based on incomplete building documentation. This paper describes the process used to addresses and overcome each of these challenges. The BIM framework and its refinement are presented along with evaluative data from a case study where a model was developed using this framework for a complex university building. The results of this study demonstrate how these BIM models can be developed for the most challenging existing building scenarios and effectively used to improve building management and performance.

This study was conducted to determine the environment of Orang Asli village and doing field research in Kampung Peta, which is populated by Jakun tribe. The village is located near tu the edge of the Endau-Rompin. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with key informants such as Tok Batin and focus group of selected villager among the considered knowledgeable about developments in Kampung Peta. In this research, the environment of Kampung Peta can be viewed from five aspects which is housing, facility, economy, and cultural. The study found that all of the aspect has been change to a more modern although there are still a few of the community were practiced their original way of life. It can view through the houses that they construct based on forest resources and akso traditional economic activities. This condition describes that Orang Asli in Kampng Peta have seen trying to entering the modernization with their own reference. In addition they also blend right in the forest that can’t be separated. Some recommendations can be implemented to ensure the sustainable development of their environment.

This paper investigates the implementation of energy management key practices in six public higher education institutions in Ghana in order to identify the existence of potential to save energy. Data for this research was obtained through questionnaire based on an energy management assessment measurement tool involving heads of estates/property and maintenance departments of the studied institutions. Total of 45 key practices adapted from previous studies has been used to assess the implementation of energy management in the respective institutions in Ghana. The study revealed that implementation of energy management key practices was generally low across all the phases. Six key practices - informing of the reasons/need for energy management, motivation, conducting economic analyses, tracking and targeting energy usage and key energy use groups, and reviewing building drawings and equipment specification - were not implementad by any institution.
