Presentazione
novellistica, saranno dedicati specifici numeri monografici.

Ciò sarà in

Introduction
In an increasingly crowded editorial landscape, the creation of a new journal requires
justification and an accounting for its presence.
The first and most obvious response is that, at this moment, there exists no other periodical with a focus on the Italian novella as a literary genre. Other journals, such as «Studi
sul Boccaccio» or the more recent «Studi giraldiani», concentrate on the authors named
within their titles and therefore encompass the entirety of the authors’ production, including non-narrative works. The «Archivio Novellistico Italiano» (ArNovIt) instead opts to
approach texts that highlight the literary genre rather than the individual authors (who
clearly play an important role within the genre). A clarification of the subtitle to ArNovIt
(«From the Novellino to Basile») is necessary: to be understood not in a rigidly exclusive
manner, this specification on the one hand reflects a certain stability of the genre within
its timeframe (from the end of the thirteenth century to the first half of the seventeenth
century), and on the other is faithful to the duration and intensity of its heritage within
Italy and Europe as a whole. Before the Novellino, the narrative patrimony traceable to
the model of the novella is scant or not recognizable as such; after Basile, it changes too
radically to be traced to a single common denominator.
The second response is the most challenging, but also the most laden with promise:
the Italian novella is a genre of widespread practice and diffusion, both within and outside
the borders of the peninsula. It therefore presents an opportune vantage point for verifying
the endurance and expansion of that specific Italian narrative model in its birthplace as
well as in France, Spain, England, and Germany (contributions will therefore be written
in each of the languages spoken in these countries). What matters most is that those outcomes are detectable not only within the genre itself, but in equal measure outside of it
as well. It is that which happens for example in theatre and in the novel, without considering the interconnections with other genres already present when the novella first began
to flourish, such as the exempla or fables. These are fields in which much work has been
done already, but just as much remains to be done. Specific monographic issues will be
dedicated to the convergences and exchanges with other literary genres or with the diverse
problems, traditions and branches of knowledge that intersect with the novella.
These responses imply that the journal has a comparative calling as well. It centers on
the study of the Italian novella during the period mentioned, and privileges a philological
approach to the texts – without being averse to other types of investigations – thanks in
part to an undertaking that valorizes witnesses heretofore unedited or at any rate, for a
number or diverse reasons, little or poorly known; these witnesses will be assigned to the
specific section Archive, which also gives its name to the title of the journal.

BRAGANTINI, Introduction
The chronological limitations should not impede the inclusion of research beyond these
temporal parameters within a contribution’s core, provided that such research contains at
its origin a reference to texts that orbit around the narrative form of the novella. The same
can be said regarding the repercussions of the novella’s influence beyond the confines of
the genre. The only indispensable requirement is that this treatment pertains to texts or
problems confronting that which originates in the territory of the Italian novella.
The comparative calling to which we allude is firstly an invitation for individuals to
surpass, as far as possible, the confines of the literature in which they specialize. But
above all, it is a proposal for study intended to pool this knowledge, so that we may have
a richer and more articulate landscape than that which has been available until now. Such
a task is made easier by the fact that the novella lends itself to comparisons and intersections with other literary genres much more so than is possible to observe, for example,
with the tragedy or the epic, for which theoretical codification, from Aristotle onward,
has had a decisive influence in firmly establishing its operative boundaries. The
«Archivio Novellistico Italiano» therefore offers itself as a center for discussion encouraging contacts and exchanges between scholars of Italian as well as other literary fields,
in order to permit the breakdown of the barriers between specialties which so often afflict
the humanistic disciplines.
