The first: great idea! We love this, and we’ll see what we can do. It may only require a simple update.

The second: that said, as much as we like the idea, even YouTube doesn’t allow it. There are then piracy considerations, and it is a potential content moderation nightmare. Like, for example, the whole Bee Movie. We love this idea, just as we love Bee Movie, but it will require thought and discussion before anything is (potentially) implemented.

With regard to your question in question. 

We do actually support COUB, as luck would have it. But it’s very possible something changed on their end that broke our ability to embed their content. How we handle their embeds, on our side, hasn’t changed in several years. One of our engineers would need to dig in on this more, but with time and resources stretched a little thin at the moment, we cannot say for sure when this might be.

Good news! You can, as it happens, pause them by long pressing the lightbox in mobile apps. On web, normal video controls are available. 

On Android, you can tap on the video in the lightbox to show or hide normal video controls, too. This is not the case for iOS, however: sadly, normal video controls are not available there at this time.

As and when we take a look at this in the future, you’ll catch the news here at WIP or at @changes. Hopefully before too long.

Good, incidental news for you: the team actually discussed this during a recent meeting when looking ahead to the coming months. So we can that it’s on our radar that the settings disable Gifs and Videos, but certain other elements that animate are not affected by the setting.

There is nothing more concrete to add, for now, but we will let you know the moment we do: here, or at @changes!
