See, that’s what the app is perfect for.

Sounds perfect Wahhhh, I don’t wanna

iguanodonwildman asked:

I’ve been getting notifications about people adding gifs that are credited to me to their posts. These are not my gifs. I assume this is a glitch that must tie back to some update on the site and likely won’t be fixed anytime soon, but is there at least a way to turn off these specific types of notifications?

Answer: Hey, @iguanodonwildman!

Thanks for this. We have contacted you directly for more information, but we also have some suggestions we would like to share.

If you upload a GIF to a post (instead of inserting a link to one or using the GIF search), that GIF becomes inadvertently “yours.” Also, keep in mind that folks can edit their post to replace your GIF at any time after the notification is sent. It would certainly be nice if there were a notification type that could be muted, separately from others (and may we take this chance to say that we would love to build this one day, only it is not clear when. While we would like to add it… we’ve got a lot of other things we need to build first.)

So, as there isn’t right now, if you are uploading a GIF to your post instead of inserting it, here are some temporary solutions:

  • First, try to avoid uploading or reposting other people’s GIFs, and use the GIF search when possible.
  • Alternatively, you could also copy the link to a GIF already hosted on Tumblr and paste that link into the post editor. It will insert that GIF without them needing to download and reupload it.

For those unsure how to copy image links, you right-click and select “Copy Image Link.” On Android, you tap and hold on an image, select “Share photo,” and copy the URL. iOS does not provide a way for us to do this in our iOS app.

Alternatively, what works well is that you can get the first GIF in any post by pasting the post’s permalink into the GIF search. Bonus point: this will also embed any static image like a GIF, complete with a credit link. The only downside is that only the first image is returned, so GIFsets are out of the question unless you want to use the first GIF.

We hope this helps, and thanks for getting in touch with this.

luxpenumbra asked:

Re: media auto-play - I would like gifs to autoplay, but I do Not want videos to autoplay at all. Is there a way those two features can be controlled separately?

image

Answer: Hey, @luxpenumbra!

Yes, that would be cool for us to do. Sadly, however, this is not something we can commit to in any real way right now.

We are not sure when we would get to it, for one thing, and to do so would likely be rather complicated given our current resources. It’s a neat idea, though. So, if this were to change, you would hear it at @changes or indeed here at WIP. Thanks for your question!

freshgratednutmeg asked:

May I add one suggestion as you think about the feature to restrict your gifs from gif search?

In chats/dms, (unlike posts) when you do a gif search and add the gif to the chat, it doesn't display the name of the blog you sent the gif from until *after* you hit send. I'm super empathetic to the original asker, as in looking for a cat gif to send to a friend, I inadvertently sent them a post from an undeniably racist blog, which was made clear in the blogname. So, inverse of the problem but similar issue

Answer: Hello, @freshgratednutmeg!

This seems like a pretty great suggestion to us! We would hate to send a GIF to someone inadvertently from a terrible blog. Or even a normal blog with a terrible name.

We will pass this suggestion on to the rest of the team. While we can’t promise anything at this point, it is certainly a neat idea, and we would like to see where the discussion takes us.

Thanks for your question, and have a lovely day.

birdy-bird27 asked:

I was wondering if sometime in the future we could have gifs as our profile pics. I know it was accidentally allowed for a short period of time and I think it would be a fun edition to have

Answer: Hello there, @birdy-bird27!

As much as we like this idea, we’re afraid this one won’t be happening. A long story short: it’s simply too much of a possible abuse vector and a space for bad intent, like with flashing images.

We appreciate the question. Keep ’em coming!

xofeno asked:

Is there a way to stop our gifs from showing in the gif search tool? I still want my posts to show in the tags and normal search results. I just don't want random strangers adding my gifs to their posts.

Reason being, my gifs have been added to upsetting posts a few times now. I hate that something I made out of love for a TV show can so easily be used to bolster misogynistic, racist, transphobic, homophobic, or other disturbing posts.

So is there a way to disable our gifs from appearing in the gif search tool without having to hide our posts altogether?

Answer: Hello there, @xofeno!

Thanks for getting in touch, here. There is no doubt that this would be a pretty nice user safety feature to add. Only we should say that this is not a promise to add it, just that we think it’s a good idea at this stage.

We ourselves make GIFs too, and have also experienced having our GIFs added via search to uncomfortable posts. So we understand and empathize with you entirely!

In any case, this has got us thinking. We will be back in touch as and when we have updates for you here.

a-victorian-girl asked:

Hi! I think it's time to clean up and throw away all the porn gifs from the gif library... don't you think? Thank you!

Answer: Hey, @a-victorian-girl!

Thank you for raising this with us—it is important to address. And we’re sorry if you’ve encountered content on Tumblr that shouldn’t be here in the first place.

As we reviewed your question we discovered a couple of bugs that were causing more types of content to appear in GIF search results than intended. The bugs behind that issue have now been fixed. This means that:

  • GIFs from posts that are labeled as mature or which we suspect may contain sexually explicit content are now being correctly filtered.
  • We also fixed a caching-related bug, which means that for users who have not allowed mature terms (through their Community Label settings), we will now return empty results.

This should help reduce the possibility that you encounter explicit or otherwise mature content when searching for GIFs.

As an important reminder, sexually explicit material is not permitted on Tumblr, as mentioned in our Community Guidelines. If you discover any content which violates these Guidelines, please let us know!

For example, if you click on a GIF from the library, you’ll see a link in the bottom right-hand corner which leads to the blog where the GIF was first published. From there, you can follow these steps to report the content to us.

Thank you for flagging up this issue—your feedback is vital. Have a good week!

Best,

—Tumblr Trust & Safety Team.

the-becom1ng asked:

can you apply the “don’t auto play gifs & videos” option to banners and stuff too? it could be really dangerous for photosensitive ppl & is overstimulating for some autistic ppl

Answer: Hey there, @autisticboybreakdowns!

Good, incidental news for you: the team actually discussed this during a recent meeting when looking ahead to the coming months. So we can that it’s on our radar that the settings disable Gifs and Videos, but certain other elements that animate are not affected by the setting.

There is nothing more concrete to add, for now, but we will let you know the moment we do: here, or at @changes!

andit-was-allyellow asked:

Any update on why media looks so tiny on mobile and if it's getting resolved? I thought it was just gifs but it turns out even static images look really compressed. I updated the app and everything (Android)

Answer: Hey there, @whotf-invited-moonmoon!

This is something we touched on recently over at @changes, for which the same answer must apply here: we’re aware that this bug is still happening in the Android app, and we’re currently working on a fix for this. We hope to get it out in the next version of the app!

Thanks for your question!

Love,

—Cyle.

hello! not sure if y'all are aware of the small gif/small picture bug but here's a screenshot of it in action. at random gifs and pictures on their own line turn very teeny!

Answer: Hey there, @wildfaeworld!

Not only are we aware, but we are actually already underway working to fix this! Keep an eye on here, or @changes, for any news on our progress here. You will be the first to know.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, and we hope it won’t be long until it’s resolved.

thatscarletflycatcher asked:

Have you considered a feature that allows crediting gifs while adding them through a link? very often the gif search will only offer the first gif of any given post, and if you want to use the third, you are out of luck.

Answer: Hello there, @thatscarletflycatcher.

This sounds like a no-brainer to me! And more importantly, it should be doable. We’re still working on the beta post editor on web, and automatically adding attribution to GIFs added to posts via “Add images from web” will hopefully be straightforward to implement as soon as we can spare the time.

Be sure to follow @changes to be the first to know when this happens. And thanks as always for the feedback!
