Search faces (at least) two major challenges. One is to improve the efficiency of retrieving relevant content for all digital formats (images, audio, video, 3D shapes, etc). The second is to make relevant information retrievable in a range of platforms, particularly in high diffusion ones for mobiles. The two challenges are interrelated but distinct. This report aims to assess the potential of future Mobile Search. Two broad groups of search-based applications can be identified. The first group adapts and emulates web search processes and services to the mobile environment. The second is made up of services which exploit the unique features of mobile devices and mobile environments. Examples of these context-aware services include location-based services or interfacing to the internet of things (RFID networks).
The report starts by providing an introduction to mobile search. It highlights differences and commonalities with search technologies on other platforms (Chapter 1). Chapter 2 is devoted to the supply side of mobile search markets. It describes mobile markets, presents key figures and gives an outline of main business models and players. Chapter 3 is dedicated to the demand side of the market. It studies users’ acceptance and demand using the results of a case study in Sweden. Chapter 4 presents emerging trends in technology and markets that could shape mobile search. This vision was partly based on an analysis of forward-looking scenarios for mobile, developed by the authors and evaluated by experts in the field (Chapter 5). Another input was a questionnaire to which 61 experts responded. Drivers, barriers and enablers for mobile search were summarised in a SWOT analysis. The report concludes with some policy recommendations in view of the likely socio-economic implications of mobile search in Europe.

Next generation mobile networks and technologies will support renewed media markets where main opportunities lie in the provision of ubiquitous broadband connectivity, applications and content. Within this framework the chapter reviews -and briefly discusses- upcoming mobile services, the demands of users, and  the impact of the latter on the technical requirements of the network. The main objective of the chapter is providing a simple baseline for the technological evolution of mobile media, but able to integrate main factors from the demand side, and granular enough to be used in the discussion on alternative scenarios and on the influence of potential disruptions

The deployment of NGNs (Next Generation Networks) has led to a change for the public role in the telecommunications industry. Now the public support is seen as not only responsible for the regulatory framework where market forces thrive, but as the leading force behind infrastructure deployment and innovative boosting measures. This section reviews the ways in which involvement of public administrations in the deployment of NGNs is happening. Subsequently, it focuses on the analysis of the European case and particularly on the Guidelines for the application of State aid rules in relation to rapid deployment of broadband networks that the European Commission published on
Sept. 2009.

Mobile games are a prime example of a successful mobile application and demonstrate the increasing range of relevant platforms for the media and entertainment industries. Against this convergent background, the chapter introduces the basic features of the mobile gaming market and its industrial ecosystem together with its main players and activities. The focus of the chapter lies in the challenges ahead for the evolution of mobile into a potentially dominant game platform; the role of the diff erent software platforms; and the opportunities for game developers in a new scenario dominated by smartphones, new portable devices, broadband ubiquity, increasingly mobile social networks and emerging context awareness.

Next generation mobile networks (NGMN) will support a renewed electronic communication structure where market opportunities lie in the provision of ubiquitous broadband connectivity, mobile applications and content. Regulation will mainly impact the pace of the deployment of NGMN either providing a stable and coherent framework for the market to evolve or, on the opposite, amplifying the effect of techno-economic uncertainties, and therefore delaying the roll-out. The paper concludes that the most immediate effect of regulation for NGMN refers to the long awaited spectrum management reform but, that in addition, a broader framework is needed: policy makers and regulators should define a scenario for NGMN as a cornerstone to stimulate innovation which could be transferred to markets and users in the form of new services, applications and businesses. Both elements -spectrum management and regulatory-policy framework- have been in the agenda since about five years now in Europe, though they have never reached an actual implementation. In the authors’ opinion, the window of opportunity for mobile operators’ deployment of NGMN will remain open to the medium-term, but their chances are inversely proportional to the delay in these pending regulatory decisions.

Technological progress has profoundly changed the way personal data are collected, accessed and used. Those data make possible unprecedented customization of advertising which, in turn, is the business model adopted by many of the most successful Internet companies. Yet measuring the value being generated is still a complex task. This paper presents a review of the literature on this subject. It has been found that the economic analysis of personal information has been conducted up to now from a qualitative perspective mainly linked to privacy issues. A better understanding of a quantitative approach to this topic is urgently needed

In an eminently disruptive and innovative environment, entrepreneurship becomes relevant as an economic engine and the COVID crisis has shown that business sustainability is even more linked to the digital component. In this context, this study analyzes the self-perception of entrepreneurial skills in a sample of students from two entrepreneurship educational programs, representative of a segment of potential entrepreneurs with previous professional experience, who concentrate the main initiatives of professional reorientation and skills updating. Data collection is done through a structured online questionnaire based on the Entrepreneurial Competencies Framework (EntreComp). The results show that the skills related to the identification of opportunities, highly related to the intention to undertake and the block of specific knowledge, including economic, legal and digital, are the ones that concentrate the lowest rates in terms of perceived capabilities. The incorporation of conten...

In media and content industries, the main effect of digitization has been a radical transformation of information formats and displays. In fact, these formats and displays are responsible for the shifting perceptions of users-consumers concerning how they relate and interact with information. However, in spite of its considerable relevance, the bidirectional relationship between formats/displays and users has been seldom studied. This brief paper presents an overview of the evolution of displays and devices in some key media and content subsectors -publishing and distribution of books and newspapers- with the main objective of hinting at the next steps in their evolution

Subsiding troughs that are the result of mining activities can be detected in SAR interferograms as approximately elliptic shapes against the noisy background. Despite large areas being covered by interferogram, the number of positive samples, which can be used for automatic learning, is limited. In this paper we propose two alternative methods for the detection of subsiding troughs: the first one is designed to detect any circular shapes and does not require any learning set and the second is based on automatic learning but requires a reduced number of positive samples. The two proposed methods can support manual inspection of large areas in SAR interferograms.

After more than a decade of development work and hopes, the usage of mobile Internet has finally taken off. Now, we are witnessing the first signs of evidence what might become the explosion of mobile content and applications that will be shaping the (mobile) Internet of the future. Similar to the wired Internet, search will become very relevant for the usage of mobile Internet. Within the mobile ecosystem framework, this paper will discuss if and how intense public action in the mobile search domain should (could) be. Potential actions refer both to ‘conventional’ and 'non-conventional' regulatory approaches. Public administrations as procurement bodies may leverage services and thus acting as early deployers of applications is an example of a ‘conventional’ case, while the use of the wealth of public data with high added value in mobile search scenarios would be one of a ‘non-conventional’ case. The paper will present a list of different policy options and analyse their fe...

Purpose Academic research into entrepreneurship policy is particularly interesting due to the increasing relevance of the topic and since knowledge about the evolution of themes in this field is still rather limited. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the key concepts, topics, trends and shifts that have shaped the entrepreneurship policy research agenda during the period 1990–2016. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses text mining techniques, cluster analysis and complementary bibliographic data to examine the evolution of a corpus of 1,048 academic papers focused on entrepreneurship-related policies and published during the period 1990–2016 in ten relevant journals. In particular, the paper follows a standard text mining workflow: first, as text is unstructured, content requires a set of pre-processing tasks and then a stemming process. Then, the paper examines the most repeated concepts within the corpus, considering the whole period 1990–2016 and also in five-year ter...

This paper proposes the application of a widely used approach, known as stated preference discrete choice experiments, to estimate the value of personal information in three real-life contexts and situations. The paper develops three experiments describing hypothetical situations in which respondents considered varying aspects of their personal information (e.g. storage, sharing with third parties) when (a) purchasing online a product, (b) a service or (c) conducting pure search online. The survey was carried out with sample quotas pre-specified in order to match the profile of the Internetuser population in the UK with respect to gender, age group, geographical area of residence and personal annual income. The results from the experiment provide new insights in the value and influence of attributes of personal information when conducting online transactions. In particular, main results show that there was little interest by respondents to pay in order to introduce control over thei...

The mobile environment presents numerous challenges to users and developers alike. Ideally, mobile content should be designed to enhance a user's experience rather than simply serve up the same content originally designed for other platforms. This chapter presents a study of techniques for “content adaptation”, the process of reformatting content and displaying it optimized for a mobile device. Adaptation techniques consist of a varied number of mechanisms by which content is adapted into a format more “friendly” to mobile devices. The idea of “friendly” can range from simple accessibility requirements to a dynamic redesign. Included in this discussion is a summary of the advantages and disadvantages of current techniques. Examples of different techniques are presented and illustrated along with the system framework necessary to implement them.

The paper is grounded in the idea that a theory of mobile media, like that of any other scientific discourse, must be built on solid conceptual and taxonomical bases. Within this context the paper brings together previous fragmented approaches to studying mobile media, analyses them, and develops a set of definitions and classifications of contents and applications in order to consolidate the construction of a robust mobile media theory. The paper finishes with a reflection on the ongoing mutations of this field and their implications, suggesting that scholars need to rethink the basic concepts behind their theories.

Within the city framework, next generation networks (NGN) appear as the key technology for the provisioning of smart transportation, smart grids, Internet of Things, big data, open government and all types of new services and applications. However, beyond specific aspects of the urban context, the rise of the knowledge economy has reinforced the role of telecommunications as a strategic investment in urban areas. The consensus regarding the importance of telecommunications has changed the reasoning at play. It no longer includes the existence of an adequate infrastructure as a factor affecting local development. Instead, its absence is considered a sign of underdevelopment. However, not every development is feasible in terms of costs and sustainability, in particular in a post-crisis economic climate. In this talk the main trade-offs in network deployment between service capabilities (including quality of service), technologies (including architectures and main technical parameters) will be examined in a prospective baseline for urban environments.

After more than a decade of development work and hopes, the usage of mobile Internet has finally taken off. Now, we are witnessing the first signs of evidence of what might become the explosion of mobile content and applications that will be shaping the (mobile) Internet of the future. Similar to the wired Internet, search will become very relevant for the usage of mobile Internet. Current research on mobile search has applied a limited set of methodologies and has also generated a narrow outcome of meaningful results. This article covers new ground, exploring the use and visions of mobile search with a users' interview-based qualitative study. Its main conclusion builds upon the hypothesis that mobile search is sensitive to a mobile logic different than today's one. First, (advanced) users ask for accessing with their mobile devices the entire Internet, rather than subsections of it. Second, success is based on new added-value applications that exploit unique mobile functionalities. The authors interpret that such mobile logic involves fundamentally the use of personalised and context-based services.
