In humans, the frontal sinus (FS) is located in the medial part of the supraorbital region, sometimes expanded throughout the frontal squama. It exhibits high morphological variability, but its general form appears to be constrained by surrounding structures. The goal of this study is to analyze FS growth and test for covariation between FS volume and the glabellar region, upper nasal region, bone thickness and endocranial size in a human sample from Argentina. The sample comprises 149 reconstructions derived from computed tomography images of individuals aged 0-31 years. Volume of the FS and measurements of the surrounding structures were recorded. The FS growth trajectory was assessed by parametric and nonparametric methods, and covariation was determined using correlations and partial correlations. The FS volume could be measured at an age of about 6 years and older; adults had no aplasia but hyperplasia was found in some cases. Since the most conspicuous characteristic found was...

Since the first anthropological studies, the skull has been a fundamental empirical reference. Due to this, a large amount of cranial collections derived from different human societies were created. Even with renewed theories and methodologies, craniological studies continue in present times. The goal of this paper is to understand the conditions of possibility of anthropological research regarding this subject in Argentina. Firstly, I analyze Marcelo Bórmida’s morphological study on indigenous skulls of Patagonia through the different sample, intellectual and geopolitical aspects of the sample he investigated. Secondly, I outline some theoretical, technological and political changes that have occurred in craniological studies in recent decades, among which I focus on the restitution of human remains to indigenous peoples.

In this paper we analyse how the collections of human remains in the Museo de La Plata (Argentina) were intervened, identified, classified, documented, exhibited and stored between the last years of the 19th century and the 1940s. The analysis of archives and publications, the composition of bone assemblages, the storage spaces and the osteological characteristics allow us to state, firstly, that the anatomical criterion was privileged, but not the only one. Thus, collections of skulls, pelvises, long bones, skeletons, and formalin preparations were made, sometimes subdivided by geographical region. Secondly, the exhibition incorporated rearrangements determined by museum curators and their research interests. Thirdly, many skulls and skeletons were identified and referenced, sometimes as the product of vague memories, and then reordered as a result of the exhibition and research. Finally, we discuss how these practices impact in the restitutions of human remains to indigenous people.

Every process of restitution of human remains kept in museums has its own particularities. In this process, social actors with different backgrounds, driven by heterogeneous objectives and interests, collaborate, juxtapose and sometimes even confront each other. In this article, we analyze the trajectory of the mortal remains of Sam Slick – one of the sons of the Tehuelche chief Casimiro Biguá– whose skeleton, exhumed towards the end of the 19th century, formed part of the collections of the Museo
de La Plata (Argentina). We reflect on the circumstances which, in a context of state and scientific violence, turned indigenous bodies into objects of study. Finally, we explore the role that genealogies and memories play in the process of political subjectification of indigenous peoples in Argentinean Patagonia.

Canalization is a developmental property of organisms that constrains morphological variation and can be expressed as a reduction of the variance among individuals. This work aims to evaluate variance of size and shape in the human skull during postnatal ontogeny in order to infer canalization. Craniometric landmarks were digitized on 266 skulls of individuals at age 0, 2, 7, 12, 15, 18 and 20 years. Geometric morphometric was used to compute variance of size and shape at each age and then variances were compared between consecutive ages. Neither variance of size nor variance of shape showed progressive reduction along ontogeny. There were no differences in the variance of size between consecutives ages but significant reductions of variance of shape were found between ages 0 and 2 for the neurocranium, as well as between 7 and 12 for the face. These results suggest that canalization is related to developmental processes such as brain growth and dental emergency that affect differently the neurocranium and the face at particular moments of the ontogeny. Keywords: variance, neurocranium, splacnocranium.

The neurocranium of hominid species has been largely studied with reference to the midsagittal plane, with variations being attributed to brain evolution. By contrast, there is limited information on variation in non-midsagittal regions, which are the points of insertion of muscles and bony structures related to mastication. This work aims to analyze ontogenetic changes and sexual dimorphism (SD) in midsagittal and non-midsagittal neurocranial structures from a contemporary human sample comprising 138 computed tomography (CT) cranial images of individuals ranging from infants to adults. Morphology of the vault and the base was assessed by registering landmarks and semilandmarks, which were analyzed by geometric morphometrics, and the endocranial volume (EV). The results of regressions and Kruskal-Wallis test indicate that the major size and shape changes in both midsagittal and non-midsagittal regions occur during infancy and juvenility; shape changes are also associated with an inc...

Most studies on craniofacial morphology have focused on adult individuals, but patterns of variation are the outcome of genetic and epigenetic variables that interact throughout ontogeny. Among cranial regions, the orbits exhibit morphological variation and occupy an intermediate position between neurocranial and facial structures. The main objective of this work was to analyze postnatal ontogenetic variation and covariation in the morphology of the orbital region in a cross-sectional series of humans from 0 to 31 years old. Landmarks and semilandmarks were digitized on the orbital rim, as well as in neighboring neural and facial structures. Data were analyzed using geometric morphometrics. Results indicated that orbital size increases during the first years of postnatal life, while the shape of the orbital aperture does not change significantly with age. In general, the pattern and magnitude of shape covariation do not vary markedly during postnatal life although some subtle shifts were documented. Additionally, the shape of the orbital aperture is more related to the anterior neurocranium than to zygomatic structures, even when the allometry is adjusted. Although we expected some influence from postnatal craniofacial growth and from some functional factors, such as mastication, on the development of the orbits, this assumption was not completely supported by our results. As a whole, our findings are in line with the prediction of an early influence of the eyes and extraocular tissues on orbital morphology, and could be interpreted in relation to processes promoting early neural development that coordinately affects orbital traits and the neurocranial skeleton. Objectives: This work assesses cranial vault thickness (CVT) ontogenetic changes using a computed tomography database to register thickness across multiple regions. Methods: Vault images of 143 individuals from 0 to 31 years old were analyzed by thickness semiautomatic measurements. For each individual, we obtained a thickness mean measure (TMM) and its coefficient of variation, a measure of endocranial volume (EV), the distribution of relative frequencies of thickness—relative frequency polygon, and a topographic mapping that shows the thickness arrangement through a chromatic scale. Ontogenetic changes of these variables were evaluated by different regression models (TMM vs. age, EV vs. age, TMM vs. EV) and visual comparisons between the age groups. Results: TMM increased during ontogeny until the onset of adulthood without sex differences, but the most accelerated growth rates occur during the first 6 years of postnatal life. TMM variations were associated with EV only in infants and children, but not in later periods. The polygons showed a flattening during ontogeny, probably due to an increase in thickness variation within individuals. However, the adult pattern of thickness arrangement, with the lateral region thinner than the regions near sagittal plane, was detected from infancy. Conclusion: The pattern of thickness arrangement is established early in ontogeny but CVT increases and changes in distribution until adolescence. Several factors may influence CVT, such as the brain, muscles, vessels, and sutures.

Abstract
The exhibition of human remains is a controversial subject. Political, ethical and scientific aspects, with the sensitivity are together involved in the debate of this subject, producing contentious positions. In this study, we evaluated visitors’ opinions about the exhibition of human remains, considering as reference the permanent exhibition “Being and Belonging: a tour to human evolution”, opened in 2009 at the Museo de La Plata. Two hundred people were surveyed through a semi-structured questionnaire, which focuses on socio-demographic aspects, motivations and expectations for visiting the exhibition and their opinions about the institutional policies of human remains exhibition. The information was analyzed by statistical methods (Student’s t test, Tables of Contingency and Goodness of Fit). Results indicate that most of the visitors like to observe human remains; however, most of the visitors as well agree with the institutional decision of not to exhibit human remains of American origin. It is expected that this study contributes to develop institutional policies about exhibitions that consider the visitor and its studies as a relevant participant.

In the present study, we analyzed postnatal ontogenetic integration among morphological traits of the human neurocranium. Particularly, the covariation between the vault and the base during postnatal life was assessed. Since the association between these regions may depend on the generalized change produced by allometry, we tested its effect on their covariation. On a sample of adults and subadults ranging from 0 to 31 years, 3D coordinates of neurocranial landmarks and semilandmarks were digitized and geometric morphometric technics were applied. Main aspects of shape variation were examined using Principal Components analysis. Covariation between the vault and the base was examined by Partial Least Squares analysis. According to our results, the vault and the base covary strongly during postnatal ontogeny and their relation depends largely on allometry. Two size variables were studied: centroid size, which was obtained from the recorded morphometric points, and endocranial volume, taken as an estimation of brain size. Although growing brain was found to be a developmental process that contributes to covariation among neurocranial traits, there would be other factors that exert their influence during ontogeny. These results lead to reconsider cranial morphological evolution taking into account the developmental constraints given by ontogenetic patterns of integration and reinforcing the idea that in human evolution a suite of relevant characters may be fuelled by few developmental processes.

Cranial differentiation is an indicator of relationships between populations and between populations and their environment. For instance, populations that inhabit cold climates show a particular nasal morphology that favors warming and moisturizing of the inspired air, while populations that consume diets with different consistencies show variation in masticatory structures. Hokkaido registers human occupation since the Pleistocene. After the postglacial and up to 4.300 BP the climate was quite warm; followed by a much colder period. Hokkaido was inhabited by Jomon hunter-gatherers-fishers. Their descendants, Ainu people, continued the same subsistence pattern but adding some seasonal agriculture. The purpose of this study is to compare cranial morphology of Jomon and Ainu, through the craniofunctional method, in order to verify if groups vary as a consequence of directional forces. We registered landmarks and applied geometric-morphometrics and estimated measurements and indices in neural, facial, masticatory and nasal indices. The main differentiation of Ainu occurred by a change in the nasal shape, without changes in size, and a reduction in masticatory volume, mainly in width. The pattern obtained fits with predictions: aborigines of Hokkaido evolved during the last five millennia under climatic stress and with less masticatory stress.

The craniofunctional method was developed by Héctor Mario Pucciarelli based on the Functional Matrix Hypothesis. The goal was to provide an alternative method, contrasting with classic craniometry that presents limited potential to explain biological causes of human variation. The database contains several populations of diverse origins and it enables to asses subjects, such as population history, geographic variation, daptation and morphological integration of the human skull.
