Earthquake-induced liquefaction, which turns the soil to liquid from solid, can cause substantial lateral movement to the ground surface. It has detected the potential liquefaction due to earthquakes in WestWest Sumatra is very high. The most problems due to liquefaction are loss of stability and significant settlements. For particular infrastructure such as railway, liquefaction has a considerable influence on the railway embankments. Then, it needs to be investigated whether the railway corridors are built in areas with a high potential of liquefaction. The analysis method used in this research is by comparing railway corridors against the Map of West Sumatra liquefaction potential. This study presents the most railway corridors in West Sumatra that were built in areas with having the liquefaction potential. For the corridors which may be potentially destroyed by liquefaction, special treatment must be applied to them.

The Kuranji watershed is one of the watersheds in the city of Padang, which is currently experiencing development due to rapid population growth. This has resulted in land conversion from areas that have vegetation to built areas such as settlements. This affects the balance of the Kuranji watershed ecosystem and can lead to geological disasters. Therefore an initial analysis is needed in the development of the Kuranji watershed in the future. This study aims to analyse the interrelation of rainfall and morphometric characteristics that have an impact on geological disasters. The data used are data of maximum rainfall and maximum river discharge in the Kuranji watershed from 2009 - 2018. DEM data (30x30) used to calculate morphometric aspects, consisting of linear aspects, area aspects and relief aspects. The calculation of these aspects is done by a Geographic Information System (GIS) approach using ArcGIS 10.6 software. The result shows that the Kuranji watershed has an area of 22...

The earthquake on February 25, 2022, in West Pasaman resulted in damage to people’s houses as well as fatalities. The quake happened just under the Mount of Talamau, 18 km northeast of the city of Simpang Empat City, with a magnitude of 5.2 M. This earthquake was followed by small earthquakes that occurred until February 27, 2022. Damage to houses in the earthquake-affected area became the focus of attention in this research to assess the housing vulnerability related to the earthquake hazard. The vulnerability assessment of house buildings is critical in earthquake-prone areas because it can provide information about the impacts on the buildings. The vulnerability of house buildings is closely related to the potential for damage due to earthquake hazards. The benefit of the vulnerability assessment of house buildings is to arrange the mitigation action plan to reduce the level of damage to building structures. The method, in turn, can reduce the number of fatalities as well. Buildings with a high level of vulnerability to earthquakes are non-engineered or residential buildings that are built without considering essential factors in planning, such as the necessary technical requirements.

Construction Workers play an important role in attaining a good construction and safe building. However, it has not been getting enough attention to the importance of worker’s roles since it is assumed that engineer has already enough knowledge to control and supervise the construction workers. Based on the survey conducted Disaster Study Center of Andalas University after September 30th, 2009 earthquake, it was found that generally houses in West Sumatera were constructed without the involvement of engineers. The buildings constructed based on the workers experience and knowledge only. Also, more than 95% workers in West Sumatera have lack of knowledge about the earthquake-safe house requirements and retrofitting of damaged houses. The basic knowledge of construction for workers is needed to reduce the victims in case of damaged houses during the earthquake. In this Study, the expert team who understand the aspects of the earthquake-safe house and retrofitting did training for local people and construction workers in Padang Sarai, Padang City and Kurai Taji, Padang Pariaman District. The training provides all activities that support the whole construction process of earthquake-safe house, including the retrofitting method for unreinforced masonry houses using ferrocement layers, which is presented by slides presentation and practice on the field. Evaluation of this program was carried out by pre-test (before training) and post-test (after training). The result of training program shows that the knowledge of local people and construction workers on requirements earthquake-safe house and retrofitting method using ferrocement layer improved significantly. The construction workers understood to how to build their own earthquake-safe house and retrofit the damaged houses. This training program is an effective way in disaster risk reduction to prevent the damage to houses due to the earthquake.

Padang City is one of the metropolitan cities in West Sumatra Province and has six (6) watersheds, one of which is the Batang Kuranji watershed. Over the last few years Batang Kuranji watershed has experienced significant infrastructure and urban development which began with the massive earthquake of 30 September, 2009 with coastal communities, afraid of being affected by larger aftershocks having the potential of a tsunami, moving to the upper watershed. As a result, the type of land cover that was originally an infiltration area has been changing into a runoff area. The Batang Kuranji channel with a discharge (Q25) 870 m3/s may not be able to accommodate the change in discharge which can lead to flooding. This paper aims to determine changes in discharge that occur due to changes in land cover and to analyse whether the use infiltration wells and retention pond can reduce the flooding volume. Two methods to calculate runoff discharge were adopted, HEC-HMS 4.1 Modelling and Nakayasu. It was found that the peak discharged increases to (Q25) 1,037.60 m3/s. Thus, creating retention pond with a dimension of 35 hectare with a depth of 5 m and 34,246 infiltration wells can reduce the flood risk. The percentage of runoff discharge they can accommodate is 90.98% and 9.02% respectively.

The West Sumatra beach is very beautiful and has much diversity in terms of their natural properties. This paper elaborating the diversity of the West Sumatra Beach related to their abrasion potential. Field investigation conducted to collect the nature diversities such as the plantation, sands and the geometric. The sand samples have been taken from beaches and brought to the laboratory to investigate their physical properties. The geometric of the beaches were analysed to gain the specific parameter which are comparable each other. The special study on the role of vegetation on abrasion protection as well as numerical modelling of their mechanism also had been studied and reviewed in this study. Those diversities then are turned into the engineering parameter and linked each other to gain their relation to abrasion potential. This study than can redraw the relation between the physical soil properties as well as the beach geometric with the abrasion potential of the beaches. The p...

Development of transportation infrastructure in the region aims to meet the needs of the community to facilitate mobility of people, goods, and services. However, the work of transportation infrastructure requires a large amount of cost while the development budget is limited. Therefore, a careful determination of the priority of road handling is urgently required. In this study, an analysis was conducted to determine the priority of handling strategic roads in Tebo Regency. This study uses the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method with 4 (four) criteria to determine the priority of road handling, namely: engineering, economics, regional potential, and policies. It was found that National Road - Pintas being the first priority with a weight of 0.252, then the second priority for National Road - Lubuk Mandarsah with a weight of 0.23.The third priority is Unit I Rimbo Bujang - Unit XI Rimbo Ulu Road with a weight of 0.211.

Coastal regions are vulnerable to erosion and depletion of land areas for human habitation and economic activities. A description of various types of the hydraulic structures associated in erosion protection applications are provided. Recently, because of the shortage of natural rock, traditional forms of river and coastal structures have become very expensive to build and maintain. Therefore, the materials used in hydraulic and coastal structures are changing from the traditional rubble and concrete systems to the cheaper materials and systems. Erosion problems in coastal zones are become increasingly serious due to the development of artificial activities related to the expansion of city functions, industrial complexes and harbour facilities, as well as the removal of sea sand for use in aggregate resources at the construction sites, which is a major factor in the inflow and outflow of sea sand. In addition, the environmental and economical importance of the coastal beach zones is...

Land cover change is a strategic issue in the Subwatershed of Danau Limau Manis. The community was triggered by the big earthquake of September 30, 2009, so people moved to the upper watershed. The problem is the increasing number of people, the damage to the watershed ecosystem. This damage can be seen from the erosion of river water and the availability of river water during the rainy season and dry season. An appropriate solution is needed to reduce erosion by modeling land cover. This study aims to determine the value of soil erosion and peak discharge. Erosion using a rational formula using the modified universal soil loss equation model based on land units and peak discharge. The land unit is an overlay of land cover maps, slope maps, and soil maps. Land units that produce erosion and exceed the tolerance limit are carried out with a land cover change scenario using the spatial multi-criteria analysis model. Scenario determination is also based on slope maps, land cover maps, ...

One of the hazards of the erosion is soil infiltration capacity is decreased in the place of occurrence of erosion and increasing the volume of surface flow. It will also lead to the occurrence of the superficiality of the river due to the deposition of materials of soil erosion. These hazards need alternative agrotechnology which could reduce the rate of soil erosion. This research is to know the hazard of soil erosion in the upper watershed of the Aie Limau Kambiang and find out the alternative agrotechnology for reducing the soil erosion. This research was conducted. Soil samples collected was taken in purposive random sampling based on a unit of land. The data were analyzed using the universal soil loss equation. The research results of the largest erosion threat come from the land use of traditional gardens and plant density is low. The highest erosion 151,012.00 ton/ha/year was founded on the plantation blended that have a steep slope over 35% LS value of 9.5. The better of ag...

The construction of irrigation infrastructure in Indonesia continues to increase to fulfill the need for food. However natural disasters, limits to operating and maintenance funding and other factors often result in less than optimal operation of these systems. If one part of the system is lack operational then the whole system will be affected. Continuity of supply is very dependent on the reliability of water supply, the irrigation structures and farmers using the irrigation water in an optimal manner. An irrigation system must be reliable over the whole course of its service, not only in the planning stages but also in subsequent phases so it must be managed as efficiently as possible. This study identified the factors determining the reliability of the irrigation system in the 2,665 ha irrigation area of Koto Kandis in Pesisir Selatan district, West Sumatera province. The factors that play a major role in this system were discovered to efficiency of technical operation and maint...
