He heads both the Laval site of the Observatoire interdisciplinaire de création et de recherche en musique (oicrm.org) and the Laboratoire audionumérique de recherche et de création (larc.oicrm.org). Favouring an interdisciplinary approach, his research and research-creation projects mostly deal with the study and practice of recorded popular music and the singing voice. In addition to multiple chapters, articles and conference papers, he co-authored (with Sophie Stévance) Les enjeux de la recherche-création en musique (PUL, 2013)—a revised version of which will be published in 2017 at Routledge under the title Research-Creation: Towards a Collaborative Interdiscipline—and co-edited Quand la musique prend corps (PUM, 2014) with Monique Desroches and Sophie Stévance, as well as Rewriting the Rules of Record Production (Routledge, forthcoming) with Simon Zagorski-Thomas, Katia Isakoff and Sophie Stévance. La reprise dans les musiques populaires devient ainsi un moyen inédit pour questionner, du point de vue sociohistorique, le copyright et les stratégies de médiatisation dans les industries culturelles. Résumé Après avoir passé en revue une grande partie de la documentation scientifique portant sur la narrativité en musique et dans d’autres formes d’expression non littéraires, l’auteur observe que la chanson enregistrée n’a pas véritablement fait l’objet d’études sérieuses du point de vue narratologique. Afin de combler en partie cette lacune, l’article propose une analyse de la chanson « Stan » du rappeur états-unien Eminem, dans le but de dévoiler le fonctionnement narratif de la chanson. En se concentrant sur les aspects performanciels et technologiques, l’analyse rend compte de la richesse du récit phonographique à l’oeuvre dans cet enregistrement, en considérant notamment les relations temporelles et spatiales, de même que les modes d’énonciation vocale.

Résumé Les pratiques de l’emprunt, de la transformation, de l’adaptation, du remixage, de la citation, du pastiche, de la parodie ou de la reprise sont très répandues en musique populaire. Sans vouloir rendre compte de ces pratiques de façon exhaustive, l’article propose de les aborder sous l’angle de la transphonographie : dérivé du modèle littéraire de la transtextualité proposé par Gérard Genette (1982). Le concept de transphonographie permet d’organiser ces pratiques en six grandes catégories qui décrivent les types de relations qui peuvent s’établir entre des enregistrements musicaux : l’archiphonographie (relations génériques), l’hyperphonographie (relations de transformation), l’interphonographie (relations de coprésence), la polyphonographie (compilations de phonogrammes), la paraphonographie (fonctions de médiation) et la métaphonographie (relations critiques). Since the 1970s, the landscape of higher education and research has been considerably altered by the integration of the arts within the university environment. Even though a form of research is inherent to artistic creation, the creative process is not comparable to the established procedures involved in academic research. As such, how can the imperatives of intellectual (and sometimes restrictive) rigour characteristic of scholarly endeavours be reconciled with the more explorative and intuitive approach of artistic creation? The concept of ‘research-creation’ allows artists and scholars to collaborate on a common project, acknowledging each participant’s expertise in the production of an artistic work that either generates theoretical reflections or has emerged from academic research. This fully revised and updated translation of Sophie Stévance and Serge Lacasse’s original French book offers an overview of the historical, political, social, cultural and academic contexts within which research-creation has emerged in Quebec and Canada, before similar (yet often divergent) conceptions appeared elsewhere in the world. Focussing primarily on the case of music, the book goes on to explore the pedagogical potential of research-creation within a university-based environment and proposes a clear and encompassing definition, as well as a theoretical model, of research-creation supported by concrete examples. By underscoring the reciprocal nature of this approach and the potential benefits of collaborative relationships, the authors’ vision of research-creation extends far beyond the field of music and art alone: rather, it has the potential to integrate all approaches and disciplines that seek to combine practice and research.

québécoise», débuté en 2009, des remixeurs d'origines diverses (France,
Roumanie, Maroc, Cuba, mais aussi Québec) et issus de traditions musicales variées (avant-garde, pop, folklore électroacoustique, etc.) ont été invités à produire une série de 13 remixes avec une seule contrainte : les remixes devaient comprendre des extraits d'enregistrements de chansons québécoises d'avant les années 1950. Ce projet, qui a fait l'objet d'une enquête ethnographique étalée sur 3 années (menée par Gérald Côté), mobilise intensément le numérique, tant en ce qui concerne la production artistique que la collecte et l'analyse des données ethnographiques. La question de la diffusion (artistique et scientifique), sur support numérique, est donc au cœur de la démarche finale du projet.
