This article investigates the complex interplay between subscription video on-demand services (SVODs) and the representation of Brazilianness in global media. Focusing on Brazil’s video streaming landscape, our study delves into the challenges of representing the diverse tapestry of national culture, particularly in content commissioned by foreign platforms. These challenges include technical barriers, such as the concentration of audiovisual production infrastructure in the Rio-São Paulo axis, and textual hurdles, like the perpetuation of stereotypes and exoticization of Brazilian narratives. Our investigation includes a review of historical limited portrayal of Brazilianness on domestic television, an analysis of SVOD content from 2016 to 2023, and a case study of two Brazilian original series: Cangaço Novo and How to be a Carioca. These series illuminate different aspects of Brazilian reality. Cangaço Novo depicts a less fictionalized ‘Brasil’ prevalent in mainstream media, featuring themes of drought, the sertão, and local resistance. In contrast, How to be a Carioca presents a more stereotyped ‘Brazil’ tailored for international audiences, focusing on preconceived notions about Rio de Janeiro. Our findings reveal a paradox in the role of SVODs: they perpetuate national stereotypes even as they provide global access to Brazilian content. These platforms shape and export perceptions of Brazil, influencing how the country is viewed both domestically and globally. We explore the tensions between local content creation and global distribution, emphasizing the complexities of globalization, diversity, and cultural identity within the markets of the Majority World.

The Brazilian audiovisual landscape has been monopolized by the Grupo Globo conglomerate and its commercial broadcast network, TV Globo, which established a common video experience centered on the telenovela. Although cable and the internet sowed seeds of discontent in the 2000s, it was only with the advent of video streaming services in the 2010s that Brazil's video landscape was transformed. This led to the multiplication of video cultures and greater access to transnational audiovisual flows. This article frames streaming as a competitive force that has compelled Grupo Globo to diversify its storytelling and representation, highlighting its potential to disrupt Brazil's video cultures and exposing the limits of cultural proximity. It examines how streaming services affect Brazilian video cultures and how preexisting conditions in Brazil provide opportunities and limitations to underline streaming's disruptive potential for Brazil's video cultures and Globo's declining hegemony and ability to adapt to the digital era.

Since the 1950s, the institutional police series have been among the most popular productions on US television. Through the reiteration of the "us versus them" mentality, police officers are fictionalized as normative agents who uphold "goodness", while crime is portrayed as a moral and individual flaw of the criminal. Not only do these productions recurrently ignore systemic problems in US society, which are used to explain crime in the real world, but they also reinforce the authority of the institution as the force capable of maintaining the status quo. From the perspective that these series act in the construction and mediation of meaning about the role played by real-world police institutions and their members in society, we structure the text around two main arguments: (a) TV series reinforce the police institution's authority, treating its actions as unquestionable and, most importantly, allowing real-world institutions to interfere in their fictionalization processes; (b) TV series normalize police brutality, with narratives often justifying violent acts as an efficient investigative tool, illustrating norms and bureaucracies as major impediments to the police officer's work. By framing ethical and human rights violations as efficient and necessary acts, these series contribute to normalizing some of the dirtiest aspects of the profession.

In this article, we investigate Netflix, questioning the expectations of the public and the critics regarding changes that arise from the introduction of this service in the market. From the analysis of trade press coverage, access data, and the company's investment trends, we inquire what types of TV consumption experiences are at stake in the discourse promoted by analysts and novelty enthusiasts. We also discuss how evaluations on these platforms renew the ongoing controversies about television quality. In spite of the type of elucubration awakened by the sensation of ubiquity and stylistic revolutions, we will defend that the practices related to streaming work, in fact, as updated models of linear TV.

As séries televisivas estadunidenses têm alcançado grande popularidade no Brasil.

This article aims to analyze and discuss the representation of health professionals in the American television series, with a specific focus on physicians. We defend that these professionals were initially presented as infallible heroes due to the direct and indirect participation of medical institutions. The literature review shows that this model began to deteriorate in the 1970s and 1980s presenting fallible physicians, that were liable to errors and even crimes. We argue that the current production, despite presenting ‘more human’ professionals, continues to be influenced by public and private health organizations and institutions, in order to perpetuate a favorable image of doctors and the medical institution. In this regard, we will draw attention to the recent participation of the Hollywood Health and Society in television fictional series.

This chapter analyzes the comedic lens through which the TV show Superstore critiques neoliberalism and the challenges faced by workers in the retail industry. By exploring themes such as union dynamics, automation, healthcare woes, and corporate greed, the series provides a satirical commentary on the pitfalls of neoliberal ideology and the realities of contemporary work culture in the US. Through exaggerated scenarios and humorous interactions between characters, Superstore exposes the disconnect between corporate management and frontline workers, inviting viewers to reflect on the difficulties hindering meaningful change in the capitalist labor system. The chapter also examines the show's portrayal of labor disputes, highlighting the absurdity of corporate anti-union tactics and the impact of labor activism on workers' financial stability and long-term planning.

This chapter delves into the institutional underpinnings that shape the One Chicago shared universe. The argument is that the universe’s consistency is driven by a shared institutional outlook. The One Chicago shows offer a distinct perspective on the city and its institutions, depicting them as fallible yet indispensable elements of society. Despite their flaws, the doctors, firefighters, police, and prosecutors are portrayed as tirelessly performing their duties. This shared institutional perspective reinforces a conservative view of law and justice and serves as a unifying thread across all four programs. Additionally, this perspective is rooted in a strong group identity – the characters see themselves as Chicago’s institutions, despite the stigma associated with their “dirty work” (Hughes, “Work and” 319). By emphasizing the importance of these institutions’ dirty work and their position in society, the shows underscore their vital role in the functioning of the city. The focus on strong institutions combating threats to Chicagoans, viewed through a conservative lens, is the cohesive theme that unites this shared universe. It reflects the importance of preserving traditional values and social stability through strong institutions, more so than any crossover event.

Television series about everyday institutions from the US have gained global popularity. These productions present a world with ordered meanings, where institutions play a crucial role in maintaining social order. Using a social constructivist framework, this chapter explores institutional series as more than just sources of entertainment but also as sources of knowledge about the inner workings of everyday institutions. Moreover, they can propagate myths and ideas about US institutions, serving as mediators between viewers and real-world institutions. By analyzing Grey’s Anatomy and Chicago PD, I aim to investigate how fictionalized medical and police institutions work, organize their narrative universes, and trigger myths in the process. In my analysis, I found that Grey’s Anatomy portrays medical professionals as dedicated and ethical, while Chicago PD depicts citizens as potential adversaries and the police as heroes who may behave badly for the sake of justice. Ultimately, both shows contribute to unrealistic expectations of real-world institutions and their members.

The ascent of streaming video catalyzed a global transformation in production and consumption practices, leading to a marked increase in scholarly research exploring its multifaceted implications. In their book Streaming Video: Storytelling Across Borders, editors Amanda D. Lotz and Ramon Lobato aim to analyze how subscription video-on-demand services (SVODs) have impacted global production cultures. The book navigates these services' production strategies across markets and contests the notion of a uniform disruption. It explores how these services engage with, adapt, or challenge storytelling norms. Moving beyond conventional debates that pit global SVODs against local services, this collection highlights how different services complement each other, emphasizing their role in magnifying voices typically marginalized in mainstream media, fostering a renaissance of neglected genres and formats.

Abstract: This work seeks to initiate a discussion about Comfort Series, series, which, although reaching high ratings, have been overlooked by the scholarly literature. These productions become important because of their ability to provide the viewer with an experience of security that will be translated as comfort. We argue that the pleasure of this experience lies in the fact that these productions present the world in an orderly way by triggering hegemonic myths and mythologies in the American society and also by the organizational presence of fictional social institutions. Thus, we reinforce a certain quality or sociological value that exists in Comfort Series and its potential for the study of television fictional series.
