In Russia, industrial production measures the output of businesses integrated in industrial sector of the economy. Manufacturing is the most important sector and accounts for 55 percent of total production. The biggest segments within manufacturing are: metallurgy (9.6 percent); coke and refined petroleum products (9.5 percent); food beverages and tobacco (8.4 percent); chemicals (4 percent); machinery and equipment (3.8 percent); transport (3.7 percent) and electrical equipment (3.4 percent). Mining and quarrying accounts for 35 percent, and natural gas and crude oil exploration represents 29 percent of total output. Also, electricity, gas and water supply accounts for 11 percent.

Russia Industrial Output Growth Above Forecasts
Industrial production in Russia expanded by 3.7% year-on-year in November 2024, down from October's five-month high of 4.8%, compared to market expectations of a 3.5% rise. Output growth eased for manufacturing (7.2% vs 9.6% in October), mainly boosted by other transport vehicles and equipment (44.2%), computers, electronic and optical products (23.1%), medical and veterinary purposes - (+16.0%), repair and installation of machinery and equipment (+15.0%), clothing (+10.1%), and machinery & equipment (+7.8%). Meanwhile, production of electricity and gas production & distribution accelerated slightly (1.2% vs 1.0%), while declines were seen for raw material extraction (-1.3% vs -2.0%), alongside water distribution and sewage (-1.9% vs -1.4%). On a monthly basis, industrial output was unchanged in November, after surging 6.6% in October, which was the highest in seven months. Year-to-date, industrial production expanded by 4.3% compared to the same period a year ago.

Russia Industrial Output Growth Hits 5-Month High
Industrial production in Russia advanced by 4.8% year-on-year in October 2024, up from a 3.2% rise in September and above market expectations of a 3% increase. This was the strongest expansion in industrial activity since May, prompted by massive government spending and military production tied to the war effort. Output growth accelerated for manufacturing (9.6% vs 6.6% in September), notably radar, radio navigation and remote control equipment (+78.8%); particle boards and similar boards made of wood or other woody materials (+67.8%) and passenger cars (+54.1%). On the other hand, production eased in electricity, gas production and distribution (1% vs 1.7%), while declines were seen for raw material extraction (-2% vs -1.8%) alongside water distribution, sewage (-1.4% vs -3.1%). Monthly, industrial output jumped by 6.6% in October, the most in seven months. Year-to-date, industrial production grew by 4.4% compared to the same period a year ago.

Russia Industrial Production Accelerates in May
Industrial production in Russia jumped by 5.3% from the previous year in May of 2024, accelerating from the 3.5% increase in April, and firmly above market expectations of a 2.5% expansion. Output expanded for manufacturing (9.1%), utility generation and distribution (4.2%), and logistics around wastewater disposal (5.4%), which jointly offset a contraction in the output of minerals (-0.3%). From the prior month, industrial output in Russia expanded by 1%.
