Infrastructure output in India contracted 1.8% year-on-year in August 2024, following a 6.1% growth in the previous month, marking the first output contraction since February 2021. Output decreased for coal (-8.1% vs 6.8% in July 2024), electricity (-5% vs 7%), cement (-3% vs 5.5%) and refinery products (-1% vs 6.6%). Infrastructure output in India rose 6.1% year-on-year in July 2024, following an upwardly revised 5.1% increase in June. Output rebounded for petroleum refinery products (6.6% vs -1.5% in June 2024) and increased at a higher rate for fertilizers (5.3% vs 2.4%), cement (5.5% vs 1.9%) and steel (7.2% vs 6.7%). In contrast, output grew at a slower pace for coal (6.8% vs 14.7%) and electricity (7% vs 8.6%). Meanwhile, output shrank for natural gas (-1.3% vs 3.3%) and crude oil (-2.9% vs -2.6%).
