Hungary Current Account Swings to Surplus in Q1
Hungary posted a current account surplus of EUR 1.86 billion in the first quarter of 2024, shifting from a EUR 0.41 billion deficit in the corresponding period a year earlier and above market consensus of a EUR 1.79 billion surplus. The goods account recorded a surplus of EUR 1.26 billion, swinging from a deficit of EUR 0.75 billion a year earlier and the service account surplus increased to EUR 2.15 billion from EUR 2.04 billion. Meanwhile, the secondary income deficit narrowed to EUR 0.26 billion from EUR 0.57 billion, while the primary income gap rose to EUR 1.29 billion from EUR 1.13 billion.

Hungary Current Account Gap Narrows in Q4
Hungary's current account deficit narrowed sharply to EUR 0.6 billion in the fourth quarter of 2023, from EUR 4.5 billion in the same period of the previous year, as the goods account deficit shrank to EUR 0.3 billion from EUR 4.4 billion a year ago. At the same time, the services account surplus widened to EUR 2.4 billion from EUR 1.9 billion. On the other hand, the primary income gap increased to EUR 1.9 billion from EUR 1.5 billion a year earlier, and the secondary income deficit rose to EUR 0.7 billion from EUR 0.5 billion.
