Backround: The submitted study focuses on the perception of the laity in theological works of the early Christian popes Saint Leo the Great and Saint Gregory the Great. Historical knowledge of these two theological conceptions allows us to establish and develop a theological dialogue about the right position of laymen within the Church. A long-term research project that includes the study of thinking of two popes who were influenced by the teaching of St. Augustine, theologian of Hippo. The study is structured in the following way: an introduction explaining the reasons of selection of the main topic and the authors, followed by the explanation of the context of the historical era during which both saints lived. The study continues with the presentation of theology of the laity from the point of view of St. Leo the Great and St. Gregory the Great. The conclusion recalls their message and their formation efforts in Latin Christianity. Conclusion: Currently, the experts on early Christian literature are starting to pay attention to the position of the laity in the theological thinking of the ancient Fathers of the Church. They seek to deepen understanding of the theology of the laity in early Christianity, which may clarify and deepen contemporary views of theologians in regard to laymen and their role in the Church and the world. The significance of the study is based on the connection between the research in the area of knowledge of the Fathers of the Church and its impact on contemporary theology.

Miloš Lichner, SJ, D.Th, ✉ whose scientific research focuses on publishing the works of St. Augustine in the Slovak language and the works of St. Augustine Bibliothèque Augustinienne in Paris. His professional focus also includes Latin Patrology, specializing in theology of St. Augustine, and the early-Christian dogmatic theology (Eschatology, Mariology, Theological Anthropology, Ecclesiology). He teaches also at the Theological Faculty of the Trnava University. He is a member of the international patristic organization Association Internationale d'Études Patristiques (AIEP); he is a co-founder of the Slovak Society for Catholic Theology-the Slovak Section of the European Society for Catholic Theology (SSKT-ESCT), where he worked for several years as Executive Secretary and President of the SS-KT-ESCT. He is also active in the Society of Deans of Jesuits Faculties in Europe and the Middle East. In 2019, he has been elected as President of the European Society for Catholic Theology (ESCT). Professor Lichner, is studying the Church Fathers still important in the 21st Century? Church history tells us that whenever there has been a spiritual and cultural renewal in thought or action (these two realities are constantly interconnected), it has always happened in the context of the Church Fathers' teachings. The reflection of the patristic tradition and the teachings of the Church Fathers can be recognised not only in the context of the history of theology in periods marked by certain crises and the search for new ways and dialogues with secular culture or other religions. Dielo hipponského biskupa sv. Augustína De catechizandis rudibus (O katechéze úplných začiatočníkov) je jedným z najdôležitejších dokumentov z obdobia ranej Cirkvi. Zaoberá sa správnou metódou katechizovania a zároveň ponúka i jej dva vzory. Vzniklo v rokoch 399 –405. Špecifikum diela spočíva v tom, že ide o tzv. predkatechézu, ktorá je určená záujemcovi o krst, ktorý sa po vypočutí tejto katechézy rozhoduje, či začne alebo nezačne katechumenálnu prípravu. Ako prevažná väčšina Augustínových diel, aj toto vzniklo ako odpoveď na požiadavku, v tomto prípade pastorálneho charakteru. Ide vlastne o odpoveď na tri otázky, ktoré hipponskému biskupovi adresoval kartáginský diakon Deogratias. Augustín v diele analyzuje mnohé príčiny stroskotania v katechéze a predstavuje aj spiritualitu katechétu. Dielo ponúka dve formy katechézy, ktoré sú založené na interpretácii dejín spásy, úzkeho vzťahu medzi Starým a Novým zákonom, ako aj kristologickú ekleziológiu. Je zaujímavé, že Augustín venuje veľmi veľký priestor ekleziálnej príprave možného záujemcu o pripravu na krst, pričom podstata formácie spočíva v upozornení a vysvetlení toho, že v Cirkvi nájde po krste aj zlých kresťanov, ktorým sa má vyhýbať, avšak, pripomína Augustín, nájde v nej aj dobrých kresťanov, ktorých má vyhľadávať a pridŕžať sa ich. Augustínov spis je tak cenným dokumentov o ranocirkevnej predkatechumenálnej transparencii. Podľa hipponského teológa kulminujú dejiny spásy v čase príchodu záujemcu ku katechétovi, ktorý sa takýmto spôsobom stáva súčasťou dejín spásy. Katechumen má katechézu počúvať, aby uveril, uveriac má získať nádej a dúfajúc nájsť lásku.

Obdobie konca 4. a začiatku 5. storočia je časom veľkým zmien v Cirkvi. Konštantínovský mier spôsobil v mnohých prípadoch povrchné pokresťančovanie rímskej ríše. V reakcii na to musela Cirkev spresňovať a prehlbovať viaceré aspekty viery a mravov. Predkladaná monografia sa sústreďuje na postavu sv. Augustína a na to, akým spôsobom ovplyvnil spresnenie chápania sviatosti krstu. Téma je študovaná v jeho sermones, ktoré nám ponúkajú pastorálnu a spirituálnu dimenziu jeho teológie. Sermones sú študované synchrónnym spôsobom a v konkrétnych prípadoch
dopĺňané a vysvetľované prostredníctvom Augustínových systematických diel. Tri základné kontextuálne zbierky textov tvoria štruktúru práce: katechumenátny corpus, antidonatistický a antipelagiánsky corpus. Monografia je založená na celostnom a kontinuálnom čítaní pôvodných textov, čo umožňuje zdôraznenie konkrétnych tém, ktoré sú analyzované.
