The adopted strategy allows the single-molecule magnet behavior of the system to be maintained unaltered on the surface.

The self-assembly of open ditopic and tetratopic cavitand complexes has been investigated by using monofunctionalized cavitand ligands and suitable metal precursors. In the case of ditopic complexes, self-assembly protocols, leading exclusively to the formation of both thermodynamically stable cis-Pt square-planar complexes 8 and 9 and the kinetically inert fac-Re octahedral complex 14, have been elaborated. The use of cis-[Pt(CH3)CN)2Cl2] as metal precursor led to the formation of monotopic trans-10 and ditopic trans-11 cavitand complexes, while cis-[Pt(dmso)2Cl2] afforded both cis-13 and trans-11 isomers. The self-assembly of tetratopic cavitand complexes has been achieved by using mononuclear [Pd(CH3CN)4(BF4)2] and dinuclear [M2(tppb)(OTf)4] (19: M = Pt; 20: M = Pd) metal precursors. Only the tetratopic dinuclear complexes 21 and 22 were stable. The ligand configuration with two phosphorus and two cavitand ligands at the metal centers is the most appropriate to build tetratopic cavitand complexes with sufficient kinetic stability.
H/D and guest-exchange ion-molecule reactions have been used as a new tool to elucidate the operation of multiple hydrogen bonding in gas-phase complexes formed between phosphonate cavitands and ethyl-substituted ammonium ions.

The monitoring of benzene and other carcinogenic aromatic volatile compounds at the ppb level requires boosting both the selectivity and sensitivity of the corresponding sensors. A workable solution is the introduction in the devices of preconcentrator units containing molecular receptors. In particular, quinoxaline cavitands (QxCav) resulted in very efficient preconcentrator materials for the BTEX in air to the point that they have been successfully implemented in a commercial sensor. In this work, we report a highly efficient quinoxaline-based preconcentrator material, in which the intrinsic adsorption capacity of the QxCav has been maximized. The new material consists of silica particles covalently coated with a suitable functionalized QxCav derivative (QxCav@SiO2). In this way, all the cavities are exposed to the analyte flux, boosting the performance of the resulting preconcentration cartridge well above that of the pure QxCav. It is noteworthy that the preconcentrator adsorpti...

Advanced applications, involving high risk mechanical systems, require the in-service deformation level to be verified in order to assess their safety and reliability, providing information for repairing or replacing interventions. In the present work, a self-diagnostic poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) elastomer containing a supramolecular detection probe is proposed, enabling the strain intensity in the polymeric matrix to be identified by fluorescence detection. Turn-on fluorescence represents an efficient, sensitive, simple, and real time diagnostic tool to quantitatively detect high-strain regions for the mechanical monitoring of structural elements. The supramolecular complex—cross-linking the polymer’s chains—provides fluorescence response induced by strain even if present in a very low amount (10–6 mol kg–1), completely preserving the mechanical characteristics of the matrix. The developed PDMS material is mechanically tested, and the observed fluorescence field is correlated with that obtained by the...

The synthesis and the chemisorption from solution of a terbium bis‐phthalocyaninato complex suitable for the functionalization of lanthanum strontium manganite (LSMO) are reported. Two phosphonate groups are introduced in the double decker structure in order to allow the grafting to the ferromagnetic substrate actively used as injection electrode in organic spin valve devices. The covalent bonding of functionalized terbium bis‐phthalocyaninato system on LSMO surface preserves its molecular properties at the nanoscale. X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirms the integrity of the molecules on the LSMO surface and a small magnetic hysteresis reminiscent of the typical single molecule magnet behavior of this system is detected on surface by X‐ray magnetic circular dichroism experiments. The effect of the hybrid magnetic electrode on spin polarized injection is investigated in vertical organic spin valve devices and compared to the behavior of similar spin valves embedding a single dia...

Two novel triptycene quinoxaline cavitands (DiTriptyQxCav and MonoTriptyQxCav) have been designed, synthesized, and applied in the supramolecular detection of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and xylenes (BTEX) in air. The complexation properties of the two cavitands towards aromatics in the solid state are strengthened by the presence of the triptycene moieties at the upper rim of the tetraquinoxaline walls, promoting the confinement of the aromatic hydrocarbons within the cavity. The two cavitands were used as fiber coatings for solid-phase microextraction (SPME) BTEX monitoring in air. The best performances in terms of enrichment factors, selectivity, and LOD (limit of detection) values were obtained by using the DiTriptyQxCav coating. The corresponding SPME fiber was successfully tested under real urban monitoring conditions, outperforming the commercial divinylbenzene-Carboxen-polydimethylsiloxane (DVB-CAR-PDMS) fiber in BTEX adsorption.

While pH-driven interconversion of tetraquinoxaline cavitands (QxCav) from vase to kite conformation has been extensively studied both in solution and at interfaces, cavitands behavior in solid matrices is still unexplored. Therefore, the synthesis of a new class of quinoxaline cavitand based copolymers is here reported; a soluble linear poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) and an insoluble cross-linked polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), ensuring a convenient incorporation of the switchable unit, were chosen as polymer matrices. Conformational studies, performed both in solution and at the solid state, confirmed the retention of vase → kite switching behavior when moving from monomeric units to polymeric structures.
