JULIUS SCHMOIIL AND ERNST LAUSCHKE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR S" TC BARXI-IART BROTHERS d: SPINDLER, OF ILLINOIS.
DESIGN FOR A FONT OF PRINTING-TYPE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JULIUS SOHMOHL and ERNST LAUSCHKE, subjects of the Emperor of Germany, resid ing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Printing-Type, which is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being bad to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.
This design comprises upper and lower case letters, point-s, figures, dollar-mark, and character (is. It is moderately condensed, the letters being composed of medium heavy unshaded lines. The general style of the letters is plain except as modified by the presence of somewhat peculiar ceriphs which are employed upon all terminals. In general, the ceriphs are oblique and terminate in at least one fine point, having in many instances an opposite terminal less acute. In many of the letters, as capitals A, H, M, and N, the end of the line provided with an oblique ceriph is concave, the more acute point of what appears as a ceriph being in reality the terminal of the line itself thus hollowed out upon end of the concave out with a slight spur, which appears as the opposite end of the ceriph. Other-ceriphs are simply oblique spurs projecting from 30 one side of the heavy line at the end, as in the case of lower-case y, j,and g at their terminals below the line. Other ceriphs are actual cross-strokes in oblique direction, as in the case of figure 2, lower terminal of capital 3 5 Q, and the ceriphs on the characteristics of E and F. In the majority of instances the line is slightly swelled at the end thus furnished with the complete ceriph, causing one end of the ceriph to appear less acute than the other; but in some instances the ceriph consists merely of a fine cross-line Without swell or shade projecting from one side, as in the case of the lower terminal of character & and characteristic of capital Q.
Ve claim- The design for a font of and described.
In testimony whereof We have hereunto set our hands, at Chicago, this 17th day of De- 50 JUL. SCHMOHL. ERNST LAUSCI'IKE.
