Beit known that we, CHARLES S. HAZLETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boone, county of Boone, and State of Iowa, and JOHN WEST, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, countyof Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for a Font of Script rlype, set forth in the following specification, refererence being had to the accompanying typographical impressions, forming a part thereof.

This design comprises upper and lower case letters, figures, points, character ttf, dollarmark, and vertical connection-strokes. The general style of the font is plain, without iiourish or unnecessary movement or appendages. The lower-case letters especially are quite extended, producing a square open appearance, the height and breadth of each single element, as o, and the like element of a, b, d, p, the elementwhich is repeated in m, and its like element in n and V, and the element in u and W being about equal. The lower-case letters and figures are almost devoid of shades, lines being light, but not quite hair-lines, almost imperoeptibly thickened on some of the downstrokes. Capitals are slightly but obviously shaded on downstrokes. The

inclination of the letters is forward at a very small angle, just avoiding the appearance of being perfectly upright, thus adding to the square appearance. The letters commen ce and terminate without special provision for connecting with preceding and succeeding letters-that is, no special initial or terminal strokes are appended to the letter proper. The composed matter has therefore a disjoined appearance as distinguished from the appearance of acontinuous line or pen-trail in each word. Exceptions to this rule are in some instances produced by use of the vertical circumtlex connecting-stroke to join al preceding letter which terminates forwardly at the bottom to a succeeding letter which commences with a forward stroke at the topas, for example, a, followed by n or in.
