Description

' @eine tata gtttwt @ffice -WILLIAM ULRICH, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGrNORv TO HIMSELF, CHARLES M. THEBERATH, AND JACOB H. THEBERATH, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 72,570, dated December 24, 1867.
i IMPROVEMENT IN REFLECTORS.
TO ALL WHOM' IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ULRICH, of Newark, in the county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented .a new andv improved Reiiector; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying plate of drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved reflector.
Figure 2 is a side View, partly in section, of the same. I
Figures 3 and 4 are detail plan or top views o f the clip, by means of which it is secured to the burner or lamp. i
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new re'iiector, which is so arranged that it can be easily attached to or detached from gas-burners or lamps of suitable description, and that it can be revolved around the same, so as to throw the light or shade to any desired spot, and which can be'folded out of the Way, so as to throw noshade to any part of the apartment in which it is arranged.
The invention is more particularly intended tovbe of use in private families, and in places of business where it is desirable to have a strong light upon certain spots.
A represents a reflector, made of sheet metal, mica, or any other suitable material, ofsuitable curved form,A
and of any suitable dimensions. The concave surface is polished, so that it will strongly reilect thel light. To the lower part or edge is secured one arm of a hinge, a, of which the other part is formed on a bar, B, to which the reflector is hinged. The opposite end of the bar B is provided with a sleeve, ring, or other device, b, by means of which it can be fitted upon a burner or around a lamp, and with a thumb-screw, c, by means of which it can b e clamped in any desired position. Figs. 8 and 4. represent two ltindsof sleeves or rings b, but thesame can be varied at will. By the use of such a ring or sleeve, the reiiector can be revolved around the burner, and adjusted so as to throw the light in any desired position. By means of the hinge a, the reflector can be folded down, as is indicated by red lines in iig. 2. A handle, d, is secured 'to the rear side of the reiiector, to allow the same to bc casly'haudled or folded. The relector can also be used as a shade, when itis brought between the light and any person in the room, whereby it will be of great convenience in privateresidences. Whenever it is desired, the reflector can be easily taken off the lamp or burner, and as easily replaced again.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent-v The revolving and folding reflector, made and operating substantially as herein shown and described.
2. Iiiuging a reflector, A, to a har, B, which carries a ring, sleeve, or clamp, by means of which it can be secured toa burner or lamp, substantially as set forth.
3. Providing a revolving and folding reflector with'a handle, d, substantially as set forth.
WILLIAM ULRICH.
