SHADE-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 328,275, dated October 13, 1885.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FREDERICK BARROWS. a citizen of the United States, residing at Haverhill, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Combined Shade-Holder, Shade, and Reflector for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a shade-holder for gas-burners which may be applied to burners of any of the ordinary constructions, and be readily attached to and detached from the same, the shade also serving as a reflector at the same time.

My invention is especially adapted for the use of persons engaged in stitching shoes, in which occupation it is very essential that the light be brought as near as possible to the article operated upon, especially when the material is of a black or dark color, and when it is desirable to obviate the effect of thelight and heat upon the eyes and head.

The invention consists of two arms pivoted together and having jaws somewhat of the form of calipers. The ends of the arms are separated and held apart by means of aspring which serves to hold the jaws toward each other, the jaws being made to clasp a gas burner. Connected to the outer ends of the arms is a wire frame, which extends upward and is then bent downward, and then upward in a loop, which latter supports a metal shade and reflector. By simply pressing the ends of the arms together the jaws will be opened and the holder can be readily attached to or detached from the burner. A similar holder may be connected with the pivoted arms so as to support a shade and reflector on the opposite side of the burner.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a gas-burner with my holder and shade and reflector attached. Fig. 2 is a side view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a top or plan View, and Fig. 4 is a view of the under side of the arms, showing the spring.

A is a portion of a gas-pipe, and B is a burner, which may be of any ordinary construction.

C C are two arms pivoted together at d, and having jaws C C, made in the shape of calipers or nippers.

On the under side of the arms C C is attached a wire spring, D D, which is also secured to the pivot d. This spring serves to keep the arms C C apart, and consequently the jaws C C pressed toward each other, so that by simply pressing the arms C C together the jaws C C will open and be made to clasp the burner and be retained on the burner.

To the outer ends of the arms C C are attached the two ends of a wire frame, E E, which extends upward, and is then bent downward to a point, f, when it again extends upward, forming aloop, F, and serves to hold the shade G, as shown in Fig. 1. The shade G is composed of a thin piece of sheet metal or other material, so as to present a reflecting surface toward the flame of the gas, and thus while shading the eyes will also reflect the light upon the material being operated upon, it being understood that the light is to be as near to the work as practicable.

A reflector, G, may be supported in a frame, E F, attached to the jaws C C, and arranged opposite the reflector G, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

Instead of the wire spring D D, as shown, a coiled spring may be employed to hold the arms C C apart.

What Iclaim as my invention is-- A reflector and shade-holder consisting of arms C C, pivoted together and provided with jaws C C to grasp the burner, jawrlosing spring D,having its ends secu red to the pivoted arms, and wire frame E, having one end secured to each arm, and having the central portion bent, as described, to support the shade, all substantially as shown and set forth.
