UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAooB PHILIFPI, or NEWVYOVRK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES M. LAM- LINE, KAUFMANN KAUFMANN, AND ISAIAH KAUFMANN, ALL OF SAME PLACE.
LAMP-EXTINGUISHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 340,457, dated April 20, 1886.
Application filed September 29, I885. Serial No. 178,544. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAooB PHILIPPI, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extinguishers for Lamps,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a plan view of one of my im proved extinguishers for lamps, shown as applied to a lamp burner, the cone being removed. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, and showing the cone in sectional elevation. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the extinguisher detached. Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the same.
The object of this invention is to improve 29 the construction of the extinguishers for lamps for which Letters Patent N 0. 309,398 were issued December 16, 1884, in such a manner as to make them more convenient in use and. more reliable in operation.
The invention consists in the construction and combination of various parts of the extinguisher, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claim.
A represents a lamp-burner, of which B is 0 the cone and O is the wick-tube.
D is'a plate, the ends of which are bent forward to form clasps E, which pass around the side edges of the wick-tube C, so as to secure the said plate to the said wick tube. The
plate D is made with an angular projection, F, on its lower edge, as shown in Fig. 3, to facilitate the placing of the said plate upon the wick-tube.
' Upon the lower corners of the body of the 0 plate D are formed pivot-points G, which pass through holes in the downwardly projecting arms I of the plate H, so as to hinge the said plate H to the said plate D.
Upon the lower ends of the downwardly- 5 projecting arms I are formed arms J, which project forward and are bent inward and then forward, and to their ends is attached a weight,
K, of sufficient gravity to swing the plate H over the upper end of the wick-tube 0, when the said plate is left free.
Upon the rear corners of the lower ends of the arms I are formed points L, which projectinward beneath outwardly-projecting lugs M, formcd'upon the lower corners of the plate D. The pivot-holes in the arms I are elongated vertically, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. With this construction, when the plate H is over the upper end of the wick tube G, as shown in Fig. 1, and the wick is raised by turning the button N, the first effect is to raise the plate H vertically until the points Lcome in contact with the lugs M, which stops the upward movement of the said plate H, and causes the continued upward movement of the wick to swing the said plate H to the rearward, uncovering the upper end of the wicktube, and allowing the wick to pass the edge of the plate H, as shown in Fig. 2, the arms I being made of such a length that when the plate H is pushed back its forward edge will be upon the edge of the rear side of the wicktube 0, so that the flame, when the wick is lighted, will not be affected by the said plate H. When the wick is turned down, the gravity of the weightK will swing the plate H forward over the upper end of the wick-tube O, and the flame will be instantly extinguished.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- I In an extinguisher for lamps, the combination, with the supporting-plate D and the loosely jonrnaled or mounted plate H, having downwardly and forwardly projecting arms I J, and provided with a weight, K, of the points L, formed upon the downwardly-projecting arms of the looselyjournaled or mounted plate H, and the lugs M, formed upon the lower edge of the supporting plate D, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the said hinged plate, when raised, by the upward movement of the wick will be swung to the rearward, as set forth.
JACOB PHILIPPI.
