Description

@eine tetra atntffice.
WILLIAM H. HORTON, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR ,TO HIM SELF AND NATHAN P. BROWN, OF SAME PLACE.
Letters Patent No. 74,537, dated February 18, 1868; antedateel December 27, i867.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP-SHADES.
iigt Stbthuie rtfnnh tu in tigen ttttts nteut mit making part uf tin tame.
TO ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS MAY COME:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. IIORTOAT, of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk, and State of Massachusetts,
have made a new and' useful invention having reference to Lamp-Shades; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure l denotes a top view, V
Figure 2 a bottom view, and
Figure 3 a transverse section of a lmnpshade provided with my invention, by which it may be applied to a glass chimney of a common kerosene-lamp.
Figure 4 is a top view, and 4 v Figure 5 a transverse section of a. lamp-shade with my invention, as formed for application of the shade to a gas-burner.
In the drawings, A denotes` the shade, it being a piece of sheet metal bent lin the form analogous to 4the outer Vcurved surface nf the hoof of a horse. A bar, B, hinged at one end to the inner surface of the shade, slides on an arch-piece or curved arm, C, extended from the said surface, and through a slot in the bar. The
purpose of the curved arm is to steady the bar, and ,hold it in any desirable 'angular position, with the shade within the limits of motion ofthe bar on the arm. The arm so holds the bar 4by bearing closely or with friction against the opposite sides of the slot in'the bar. The bar B, at its free end, is jointed to another bar,` D, which terminates either in a hook', as shown ata, in fig. 3, orvin an eye, as shown at b, in figs. 4 and 5. There also extends from the bar VD a i'ork, E, the saine being as represented in figs. 1, 2, and 3, orin figs. 4 and 5. The hook and the fork enable the shadeholder to be applied to a glass-lamp chimney, the hook being caught on the top of the chimney, and the fork being made to embrace the chimney. The eye is to receive and fit on a gasburner, which the fork is to embrace, and thereby aid in holding the part D to the burner.
By such means, the shade may not only be fixed to butadjusted into different angles with the burner or lamp, as the case may be, and as occasion may require.
I claim the lamp-shnde supporter and adjuster, consisting of the friction-arm C, the bars B and D, arranged .nd applied together and tovthoshade as set forth.
I also claim the combination and arrangement of the fork E with the arms C B D, arranged and applied together,and to the shade A, substanlially as hereinbefore explained.
WM. H. HORT ON.
