Definitions
- My improvements consist in the manner of attaching to thedamper-plate the rod A, by which it is turned, and also in providing a spring, B, on the side of the damper-plate rod, arranged in such a manner as to hold the l damper-plate in any situation by the friction of said spring on the side ot' the aperture in the pipe through which the rod passes.
- this spring in this case by bending the rod A at the top in the .form of a ring, and passing the end down into the aperture in the pipe, so that it may, by its tendency to spring outward, press against the side ofthe aperture, and thus hold the damper-plate iny position -by its friction.
- My other improvement consists in the many ner ofjoining together the rod Aand damperplate by bending it so as to tit the depressions formed in the damper-plate, and the rod and plate are held tightly together by means of the elasticity of the rod, the curvatures of which are compressed when forced into the grooves. In this way, by a single wire rod and a plate, I obtain a simple and perfectly adjustable damper at a very small expense.

Description
R. i61.' BRECKENRIDGE.
Stove Pipe Damper.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IMPROVEMENT IN STOVE-PIPE DAMPERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56.891, dated August 7, 1866.
To all 'whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, R. Moss BREGKEN- RIDGE, of West Meriden, county of New Ha- .ven, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Damper; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional view of a stove-pipe, showing the damper-plate shut. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the damper-plate, showing the manner in which the rod A passes through. My improvements consist in the manner of attaching to thedamper-plate the rod A, by which it is turned, and also in providing a spring, B, on the side of the damper-plate rod, arranged in such a manner as to hold the l damper-plate in any situation by the friction of said spring on the side ot' the aperture in the pipe through which the rod passes. I form this spring in this case by bending the rod A at the top in the .form of a ring, and passing the end down into the aperture in the pipe, so that it may, by its tendency to spring outward, press against the side ofthe aperture, and thus hold the damper-plate iny position -by its friction.
My other improvement consists in the many ner ofjoining together the rod Aand damperplate by bending it so as to tit the depressions formed in the damper-plate, and the rod and plate are held tightly together by means of the elasticity of the rod, the curvatures of which are compressed when forced into the grooves. In this way, by a single wire rod and a plate, I obtain a simple and perfectly adjustable damper at a very small expense.
Now, having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The rod A, combined and arranged with the damper-plate C, substantially as and forw the purposes herein set forth.
2. The spring-handle -B, at the upper part of the rod A, combined with the rod A and damperplate C, substantially inl the manner and for the purpose herein 'shown and described.
R. MOSS BRECKEN RIDGE.
