Letters Patent No. 80,499, dated July 28, 1868 IMPROVEMENT IN REFLEGTOES LIge dgehnle rzemh fl Migrar *'tltera atmt mili making part n 1132 sms.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN;
i Be it known that I, LOIS PORTNER, of thecity of Chicago, in the county of Cook, anti State of Illinois, have invnted new and useful Improvements in Light-Reflectors for Ghandeliers;" andl do her-ehy declare that the following is :rfull and exnct description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,
making partof this specification, in which- Figure 1 represente a. chandelier, with my reflectors put on,
Figure 2 a. top plan view of a refiector, and
Figure 3 a. side view of the seme.
The nature of my invention consists in so shaping the reflecting surface of the reflectors used on chandeliers as to illuminate the table or other objects thoroughly, without leaving any shadow in the centre.
To enable others skilled'in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its Construction and operationl The principal object of niy refieetor s to use it on the kerosene-lamps of chandeliers for illumnating hilliard-teb1es,- although the same can he used for illuminating dining-tubles or for other purposes, as also for gas-chand'eliers. I
The refiector A is made of sheet metal, principally tin, 01' of any other material suitable for the purpos e. It is rnised in the rniddle; a, and is slanting lengthweys towards its outer edges, the edge b of which, the farthest from the centre of the chandelier, is bent down sha-rply, so 'as to refiect the light in the direction m m elmost vertcally, While its nem-est edge d to the centre of the chandelier remeins'straight, the longest edges of the refiector gradunting accordingly, and :is-the refiecting-surfuce, terminated by the edge d, slnnts gradually to the said elige, the light reflected by this side will be thrown pnrtly in the'directon n n,a. little below the central cup B of the c'hztn'delier, the result being that the light of two or more iamps refiected on one side right down, end on the other side towards the centre of the chundelier, will illuminate the table perfectly, without lenving any shedow in the centre.
y The reflectoris provided with an Opening, O, to slip it ever L tin top, D, of t'he lamp-glass E, end a wire, F hooked at the end, hinged to the top of the refiector, :1nd at the edge of the Opening O, serves the purpose to support the reilector over the lamp by booking said wire over the tin top of the glass.
That I claim ns my invention, and desire to Secure by Letters Patent, s--
The refiector A, constructed substantiully as and in the menner herein set forth and for thepurpose specified.
LOIS PORTNER.
