TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JOHN HEUERMANN, of Davenport, in the c ounty of Scott, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Fire-Escape; and I do hereby declare that the following is a truc and exact description thereof.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction and combination of two ladders and a fire-escape box in such manner as to admit of the raising and lowering of escape-box and one ladder, while the other ladder remains stationary; the attaching of a ladder to escape-box, as shown on drawings; the attaching of a cam in such manner as to throw such last-named ladder to and from the building by means of a rope connected therewith; the framing of such escape-boxV and escape-box ladderrin such manner as to admit of folding up while not in use, and the connecting therewith arms or braces, as shown on drawings, for raising and holding such ladder in a rm position; reference being had to the accompanying drawings,making a part of this specication, in which- Figure I is a perspective View, with fire-escape folded up.

Fire-escape box, iig. 4, is attached to ladder D by slides N, which borv is raised and lowered by ropes attached to roller A, from which the ropes R pass up and over the grooved wheels on iron shaft' marked V, and the ends of rope are securelyr fastened to one of the bolts X which connect the frame of the escape-box, as shown on'the drawings. Letter W represents the arms by which the ladder is raised from the ground and supported in its place. Letters E, F, G, and H represent the different pieces of iron frame of escape-box. Letter K, the floor of same, of wood or sheet iron. Letter L, of side pieces, of wood or sheet iron. Letter I, the ladder of escape-box.l Letter J, the iron points or hooks of escape-box ladder. Letter C, the cam, by which escape-box ladder is moved to and from the building. Letter O represents an iron brace which is placed into grooves marked P to hold escape-box securely in shape when thrown open. Letter M represents the bottom hatten or brace of iron, securely fastened by bolts, or otherwise, to frame-pieces F, so that the frame-pieces E of. escape-box 'rest upon the bottom hatten or brace when the escape-box is thrown open. The ladder of escapebox is securely fastened by iron bolts X to frame-pieces G and II, as shown on drawings. Letter Q represents the ropes by which the cam C is moved, so as to throw the escape-boxvladder to and from the building. Letter Il represents a ratchet for holding ratchet-wheel to its place. Letter S represents a ratchet-wheel securely fastened to roller A. Letter T represents a flange securely fastened to roller A. Letter U represents the chains securely fastened near the bottom of ladder D, which are to be used for fastening such ladder to its position on the ground. Letter Z represents the hole in roller Athrough which the ropcs'lt pass and are securely fastened.

What I claim formy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. 'Ihe combination and arrangement of the fire-escape box in all its parts, in the manner and for the purpose herein described.

2. The method of attachment ot' such hre-escape biox to an ordinary ladder, in the manner and for the purpose herein described. l

3. The method ofattachment of the ladder to fire-escape box, so asv to be easily thrown to and from the building by means of the cam and ropes, arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
