@met 'Chillin ODENBAUGH, OF MIDDLETOWN, PENNSYLVANIA. d Letters Patent No. 83,994, dated November 10, 1868.
IIVIPROVED SCAFFOLD.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may omwem:
Be it known that I, FRANK ODENBAUGH, of Mid-V dletown, in the oountyof IVashington, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Scaffolding; and I do hereby declare that the following ,isa full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1, of the drawings, is a representation of a side View of my device, and
Figure 2 is an end View thereof.
The object of my invention-is to provide, for the use of carpenters, painters, masons, and glaziers, a porta- 4-ble scaffold, that shall be more perfect in construction,
and more useful in operation, than any similar device heretofore known.
The letters A of the drawings represent four end .pieees, two at-eaoh end, with crossslats or ladderrounds, marked a, arranged in the manner shown, the centre round being fastened with a pin, b. The lower round` is made wider than the others, to receive and hold the ropes mentioned hereafter as connected therewith.
At the lower ends of side pieces A, I adjust axles and wheels, as lshown at c. These serve as a ready means of transporting `the scaffold from place to place, as may be desirable.
Immediatelyabovethe axle and wheels e, I adjust the crank and shaft d, in the manner represented, and I also attach to the same a ratchet and pawl, f.
The letter B represents the platform proper, pivoted, as'shown, to the side pieces A. I usually construct it of two side rails, with removable plank between them, resting upon metallic cross-bars, as shown at y. I prefer also to have two or more of these metallic crossbars extend beyond the side rails, to form a rest and and from thence downward to the lower round or slat on the opposite side.
Letter u is a rope, extending from the round or slatlastmentioned upward through staples at at, through staples on the side of the cross-bar opposite to that last mentioned. It also passes through a staple at x, and from thence downward to the lower cross-bar or slat of the ladder.
. The oiee of this series of ropes is to raise the platform propel' to any desiredaltitude, in oonj unotion with.
-the crank and shaft d, and also in conjunction with ratchet and pawl, f, to hold said platform firmly in the desired position.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A portable platform or scaold, having end pieces A, platform B, ladder-ronmls a, pin b, axle and wheels e, crank and shaft d, ratchet and pawl f, cross-bars g and h., ropes fi, 1), Ir, and u, and staples, as described and shown, constructed and arranged substantially as herein specified.
In testimony that I claim the above, I have hereunto subscribed my naine, in the presence of two witnesses. f
F. ODENBAUGH.
Viitnesses:
