Be it known that I, BENJAMIN BEST, of Dayton, inthe county of Montgomery, and State of Ohio, have invented a. new and improved Scaiiold; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whieh- Y Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved scaffold.

This invention relates to a new scaffold, which consists offa series 'of upright posts, which areanchored to the ground by means of braces, and on which slidingfbraees for supporting the platform are arranged 'in suoli a manner that the -latter can be raised and lowered at will by the parties on the platform. The length of the .scaffold can be regulated by the number of uprights employed.
A A' are upright posts, the lower end of each of which is secured to a sill, a, which is steadied by a brace, b. This brace where it is attached to the post is perforated by annmber of holes, so that the position of the sill may be changed to adapt it to uneven ground. Three (more or less) Vbraces c c are pivoted to the sides of each post A A' in such a manner that by their use the said posts can ,be firmly anchored into the ground, as is clearly shown in iig. 1. On the front of each post, z'. e., on that side of the same which facesthe side of the building or`wall on which the scaii'old is to be used, isarranged a sliding bar, B, on which one or more clips d made of sheet metal or other suitable material are arranged, so as to lsurround the post A A. On the bar B are alsb arrangedtwo ears or lugs c e, which may be made in one piece with the clip d, in which lugsl are the bearings for Athe shaftfof a drum, C, and ratchet-wheel D. To the drum is secured the end of a cord, L, of which the other end is fixed to the bar B, and which cord passes over a pulley, E, arranged on'the top of the -upright A or A', as is clearly shown in the drawing. By turning la crank, g, which is secured nto the end of each shaftf, the cord 7i is either wound around the drum or unwound from the same, thereby raising or'lowering the bar B as may be desired. -By a spring-catch, t', which is pivoted between two lugs 7c, near the lower end of the bar B, and which fits into holes Z Z which are provided in the post A or A', the bar B is held in position, and can only be raised or lowered by releasing this spring-catch. A pawl, m, which ishinged to the side of the bar B, catches into the teeth -of the wheel D and prevents the bar B from moving down on the bar A or A', sd that for elevatingthe bar B the spring-catch z' is only to be released, and the cord 71, wound upon thc drum. But
`for lowering the bar B the spring-catch z and the pawl m must be released. To the sides of each bar B are -pivoted two horizontal arms F F, and two vertical suspended arms Gr G, the respective ends of which are con-- ncctedby a brace,H, as is clearly shown in the drawing. The arms F F of the post A? are bridged over by a p late,`o, to the edges of which the planks I I are hinged, which serve as a platform,
when placed'upon thearms FF of the posts A. The ends of these planks are then firmly secured to the arms F F by means of cords p, pins g,.or otherwise. The crank g is arranged'at a convenient height above the platform I, so that it may be easily vhandled by the parties standing on the platform. It is evident that this'scaiibld can be easily'folded up and packed into a comparatively small space.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the uprights A A', pivoted and adjustable braces b C, pivoted sliding and supporting frame B F G H, friction-rollers n, clip d, with its appendage, pivoted spring-catch z', hinged planks I, Ypulleys E and cord h, operating in the manner described for the purpose specified.
2. The clip 0l when made in one piece with the lugs e, so that itserves to guide the supporting frame on the upright, and to hold the windlasls for raising and loweringl the said supporting frame, as set forth. l
