Description
u UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
A. F. STAYMAN, M. D., OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
ToBAcco-PIPE.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,402, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, A. F. STAYMAN, M. D., of the cityand county of Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Smoking-Pipes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being; had to the accompanying drawing, whichv is made a part of this specification, and which represents a perspective View ot' a pipe illustrating my invention.
This invention consists in the application of corkin the manufacture of smoking-pipes. I have discovered that this material is espe cially adapted for the purpose on account of its lightness, absorbing qualities7 and nonliability to break.
A pipe made of this material will completely absorb the nicotine and prevent the liquid results of the tobacco from entering the mouth. It will remain intact under the roughest usage, and may fall violently without being injured.
Its extreme lightness adapts it to be carried about the person with much less inconvenience than a pipe made of any of the different ma terials commonly employed.
In the drawing, A may represent a bowl made of cork, and B a stem, which may be either of cork or any other suitable material.
The bowl A is represented as lined with woven wire; but any other substance may beemployed for this purpose. The pipe may be made after any of the great Variety of styles or forms, and may be ornamented or have a neat, finished appearance imparted to it, in any desired manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tobacco-pipe bowl or stem composed of cork, substantially as described.
A. F. STAYMAN, M. D.
