NTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
TOBACCO-PI PE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 51,812, dated January 2, 1866; antedated October 19, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUST T. DIETZ, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and'State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Improved Pipe for Smoking Tobacco; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of myinvention consists of such novel arrangementand construction as are hereinafter described for preventing the oil of the tobacco from beingdrawn alongwith the smoke into the mouth of the smoker, and for preventing fouling.
In order to enable others to construct and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and opera-tion.
The accompanying drawing is a longitudinal section of my pipe.
The bowl A has screwed or otherwise attached to it the reservoir or drip-chamber B. The extension C of the elbow D or of the stem ofthe pipe passes diametrically through it, and is secured by the nut and screw on its extremity and by the collar a. The nut and collar, bearing against the surface of the reservoir, form a tight and perfect connection. The tube b of the extension opens downward into the reservoir, preventing the oil of the tobacco from getting into it (tube) and making an outlet for the saliva in the stem.
The oil of the tobacco and the saliva collected in the reservoir are` removed by'detaching the cap E or withdrawing the extension C and using its bearings for that purpose.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
Extending the stem of the pipe or of the elbow D through and opening its tube downward into the reservoir, as specified and described.
