Description

ot' Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN HOFFMANN, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 49,268, dated August-F, 1865.; antedated May 22, 1865.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, CHRISTIAN HOFFMANN,
in the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Pipe for Smoking Tobacco 5 and 1 do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters ot' reference marked thereon.
My invention consists in keeping the smoke of the tobacco free from the oil of the tobacco and the saliva from the month by providing the bowl of the pipe with a chamber for the reception of the oil of' the tobacco and the stem of the pipe with a chamber for the saliva by such contrivance as is hereinafter shown and described.
In order to enable skilled mechanics to make and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part ot' this specication and is a longitudinal section ot' my improved smoking-pipe, A is the tobacco-bowl, and is screwed into the dripchamber B at a, and has the drippipe C inserted into it and projecting into the chamber B.
D is a tube for connecting the chamber B with the chamber E, which is to receive the saliva from the stem F. The stem 1F has the neck G projecting from it into the chamber E;
The smoke from the tobacco passes down thedrip-pipe Cinto thechamberB,a-nd through the pipe D into thechamber E, thence through the stem F into the mouth of the smoker. The oil of the tobacco drops from the drip-pipe G into the chamber B. The saliva drops from the neck G into the chamber E. Both the oil of the tobacco and the saliva can be removed by detachin g the stem F and tilting the pipe until the oil ot the tobacco runs through the tube Dinto the chamber E, and is carried oft through the socket of the stem F; or both the bowl A and the stem F can be detached.
The ends of the drip-pipe C and the neck G project below thc openings b and c of the tube D.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf i The combination and arrangement of the bowl A, the drip-pipe C, the drip-chamber B, the tube D, the drip-chamber E, and the neck G, substan tially as herein shown and described.
CHRISTIAN HOFFMANN. Witnesses:
