Description

NITED STATES: ATENT FFICE.
THOMAS sMITH AND HENRY J. BROWN, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
TOBACCO-PI PE STEM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 46,505, dated February 21, 1865.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, THOMAS SMITH and HENRY J. BROWN, of Detroit, in the county of WVayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Tobacco-Pipe Stem; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents a sectional side elevation of this invention, showing its operation. Fig. 2 is a similar representation to Fig. 1, with the different parts disconnected, showing their mode of construction.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention consists in a tobacco-pipe stem provided with a water-chamber in two sections, in combination with two small opposite tubes extending partially through each aforesaid section, with an adjustable cap over the tubein the lower section, so that the smoke coming out of the top of the tube is conducted down into the water and cleansed of all particles of dust and ashes, and is relieved of a large per centum of its nicotine, and the aforesaid tubes are so arranged in the centers of the aforesaid sections that the water cannot escape through them from the aforesaid chamber. 1
B B is a tobacco-pipe stem containing the water-chamber c c, with the two opposite tubes D E, and a cap, F, fitting over the tube E in the lower part of the chamber, so that the smoke coming up from the bowl, through the passage H and through the tube E and out at the aperture 5/, is conveyed into the water in the direction :10 a2, and then up through the water, as indicated by the red line, into the upper part of the chamber, whence it is conducted through the tube E, through the pasmade delicious and heathful from being relieved of its excess of nicotine. The water is prevented from spilling out by the tubes D and E being placed in the opposite centers of the chamber, so that when the stem is turned in various positions the water passes or remains on either side of the tubes aforesaid without entering them.
Thestem may be constructed of wood, horn,
or other material, and in two sections, to be joined together by screw-thread or other desirable manner, so that one-half of the waterchamber is in each section.
The tubes D and E may be constructed of tin or other available and suitable material. The cap F can also be made of tin or other suitable material.
We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent The combination of the stem B B, chamber 0 0,. and tubes D E, and the cap F, all constructed and'operating substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
