Patented Feb. 6, 1866.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

TOBACCO-PIPE.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 52,419, dated February 6, 1866. I
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL JEANNE, of the city of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tobacco-Pipes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description thereof, whichwill enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a side view of my improved pipe. Fig. 2 is a view ofthe same open. ,Fig. 3 is a section through the line as 00, Fig. 1, lookingto the left.

The object of my invention is to furnish a pipe which may be readily agd thoroughly cleaned when and as often as desired and it consists of a pipe" made'in two parts hinged together at the bottom, the parts beingheld together by metallic rings or bands screwed on around the top and heel of the pipe, and the leakage of smoke being prevented and the seam made air-tight by a packing of cork or its equivalent around the division-seam, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is a portion of the stem of the pipe. B is the bowl, which is made in two parts by being divided longitudinally, as represented in Fig. 2. The two parts or halves of the bowl are hinged together at the bottom by means of a small hinge, G. The parts B are kept together when closed by the caps or bands D and E, which are screwed on to the top and heel of the bowl.
To prevent the passage of smoke through the seam formed byjoining the parts B in the manner described, and at the same time to make the seam air-tight, I cut grooves in the solid substance of the pipe-bowl, in which I place a packing, F, of cork or equivalent, as represented in Fig. 2. These grooves are made slightly dovetailed, so as to retain the the smoke from the bowl to the stem, as in ordinary pipes. H is a metallic strip which may be placed over the seam formed by the meeting of the parts B, if desired.
What 1 claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A tobacco-pipe of any material or form made in two parts hinged together at the bottom of the bowl and secured by bands at its top and heel, the seam being made smoke and air tight by packing, the whole being constructed substantially as described, and for the pur-- poses set forth.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 10th day of October, 1865.
PAUL J EANNE.
