BOTTLE STOPPER AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 289,215, dated November 27, 1883.
Application filed September 29, 1883. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, FRANK. BURNS, acitzen of the United States, residing at Westfield, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle Stoppers and Fasteners; and I do hereby declare that the follow` ing is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this speciiication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. Figures l and 2 of the drawings are perspective views, showing the application of my invention; Fig. 3, a detail view of the bodyA portion ofa double stopper; Fig. 4.a detail sectional view of the rubber tip. Fig. 5 is aper spective view, showing the lever forced up against the nose of the bottle and the stopper removed from the mouth of the bottle.
The present invention has relation to bottlc-Stoppers and stoppenfastenings; and it consists in the several details of construction, substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, A represents the lever of my improved fastener, having its form substantially like that of a W, its ends a adapted to be pivotally secured to a wire around the bottles neck, or have their bearing in depressions formed in the sides of said bottle.
To eyes bof this W-shaped lever A is pivotally connected a bail, B, which passes through an opening, c, in or about the center of a stopper, C, and is so bent as to form shoulders d, as shown in' Figs. l and 2, to prevent lateral displacement of said stopper. This stopper C is formed of a body of metal. wood, or other non-elastic material in such a manner as to have a hub, e, from which projects in a vertical direction lugs f, having shoulders g, adapted to receive and hold thereon suitable rubber tips, thereby forming a double reversible stopper. The rubber tips employed upon theiproject-ions f of this stopper are formed with a flange, h, and a circular shoulder, t, `projecting above said flange, so that when the stopper is in position for closing and the lever A brought down upon the bottle this shoulder is so compressed as to admit of the hub portion e of said stopper being forced tightly down upon the flange, to eifectually seal the bottle, and increase the power and durability of the stop' per. IVhen the W-shaped lever is forced upward, to uncork the bottle, as shown in Fig. 5, the central portion of said lever will abut against the bottles nose k, which will prevent the lever from swinging over on the opposite side thereof, while at the same time the bail and stopper are also held ou the same side with the lever by the lower end of said stopper striking against the interior of the bottles mouth. The bail B, being pivotally connected to the lever A, swings free from the bottle when the same is unclosed, carrying withit the stopper C.
rIhe stopper, being constructed as above described and being pivotally connected to the bail on the line ofmkits axis, will always present one or the other of its ends directly to the mouth of the bottle when it is desired to close the same.
The advantages in providing astopper with a rubber tip at both'its extremities, and pivotally connecting it to the usual swinging bail, is that not only can either end be used, but when one of the tips becomes worn or lost, the stopper is still capable of use by bringing the opposite end thereof to t-he bottles mouth, thereby rendering the stopper effective for longer use.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with a suitable fastening device, of a reversible bottle-stopper pivoted thereto, and consisting of a body of wood, metal, or other non-elastic material, provided at both ends or extremities with elastic tips, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with a W-shaped lever pivoted to the bottle, and a bail pivoted to the lever, of a reversible bottle-stop per pivoted tosaid bail, and consistingV of a non-elastic body composed of a central hub, and lugs projecting from each side thereof and provided with elastic tips, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
FRANK. RURNs.
