Description

@uiten faire se-.tent @ffice JOHN J. ESHLEMAN, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO' HIMSELF AND JAMESRILEY, 0F SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 62,536, dated jlIarc-h 5, 1867; antedated .February 16, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHING STOPPERS TOBOTTLES.
dlgs dgrhnle nimm tu in lgrst rttrrs nrnt nur making' part at' llore samt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
B e it known that I, JOHN J. ESHLEMAN, of Philadelphia., Pennsylvania, have invented an Attachment for Bottle Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference marked Ithereon.
My invention consists of an elastic ring and a chain combined with a bottle stopper, in the manner described hereafter, so that the stopper may be securely attached to and readily detached from the bottle when required.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and the manner in which it is applied. On reference to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part et' this specificationl Figure 1 represents a bottle stopper with my attachment.
Figure 2 the same, applied to a bottle; and 'V Figures 3 and 4 modifications of part of the attachment.
A is a. metal socket, in which is secured a stopper, P, ot' cork, or other suitable material, and to the top` of this socket is connected one end of a chain, a. To the other end of the chain a is secured a curved metal tube, C, through which extends a portion of a spiral spring, D, the opposite ends of the said spring (which is bent in the formrof a ring)being secured together within the tube. When it is desired to connect the stopper to a bottle, the elastic ring D is slipped over the usual enlargement It, at the mouth of the bottle, until it,
occupies a position on the neck below the said enlargement, as shown in fig. 1, the ring expanding as it passes' overthc enlargement, and then contracting so as to adhere firmly to the neck, and remain in the position in which itis placed. Instead ot' a ring composed ot' a spiral spring a split ring of wire may be used, one end bein-g secured to 'the tube Cfand the other end projecting into and sliding in the tube, as shown in tig. 3; or the tube C may be dispensed with, and a split wire ring, similar to that shown in tig. 4, may be used. It will be seen that by the use of this attachment a stopper may be securely connected 'to a bottle, while it can be readily detached when required.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- An expanding or elastic ring D and a chain, a, in combination with a. stopper, B, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specilieetion in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
J. J. ESHLEMAN.
