J. 1?. KING.
Pad for Bottle Stoppers. No. 232,188. Patented Sept. 14, I880.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. KING, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRIGT OF COLUMBIA.
PAD FOR BOTTLE-STOPPERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 232,188, dated September 14, 1880.
Application filed July 28, 1880.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Washington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pads for Bottle-Stoppers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it ap pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to that class of pads or washers for bottle-stoppers in which the body of the padis provided with a head and one or more collars, and is to be attached to a projection on the cap-piece of the bottle-stopper.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described hereinafter, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of part of a bottle with the stopper fastened down. Fig. 2 represents a similar view with the stopper raised. Fig. 3 is a detached View of the pad. Fig. 4 is a modification of the same.
In the drawings, Arepresents the upper part of a bottle, to the neck of which is secured a bottlefastener, B, the one represented being patented to me July 27, 1880, No. 230,423, although my improved pad can be applied to any other bottle-stopper in which a pad is required.
The upper end, 0, of the bottle-fastener is provided with the ordinary teat or projection 0, over which the pad D is secured in the usual well-known manner. This pad consists of the body a, and has a socket to receive the nipple of the cap 0, a broad head or collar, 2), the upper face of which is slightly beveled, so as to fit snugly into thelower recessed end of O. The collar b bears on the upperend or mouth of the bottle andfirmly closes it when drawn down by the bottle-fastener against the bottle. A short distance below the head I) is arranged a second collar, (1, of smaller diameter than the upper one, and it is intended to fit tightly into the neck of the bottle, and when forced down (No model.)
into it will curl or bend up on its sides, as shown in Fig. I, and thus firmly seal it.
The bottom of the body is closed or solid, and may be provided with a small projection, e, which serves to enter the pad into the mouth of the bottle.
If desired, two or more collars, e, as shown in Fig. 4, may be employed, and the pad accordingly lengthened.
The pads may be made of any suitable material and of any size required.
The advantages of my improved pad are that it firmly closes or seals the bottle in two places instead of one--viz., on the top as well as in the neck of the bottle. It is very simplein its construction and not liable to get out of order. It can be readily applied to any of the bottlestoppers in which a pad is required, and it can be furnished at a very moderate cost, being made in one piece.
The operation will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, and will require no further explanation here.
I am aware that pads for bottle stoppers have been provided with a head and collar, as shown in Patent No. 194,204; but in this case they are held to the cap-piece by a pin protruding therefrom, which passes through the pad and secures it by washer and rivet end.
Havingthus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is
1. A pad for bottle-stoppers, consisting of a body, to, having the head I), with beveled upper face, one or more collars, d, a socket, and a solid bottom, all constructed and arranged as shown and described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pad JOHN F. KING.
