BOTTLE-STOPPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,325, dated October 11, 1887,
Application filed August 23, 1887. Serial No. 247,639. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERICK JAcoB, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottle-Stoppers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in bottlestoppers, and has for its object to pro vide a cheap, durable, and effective stopper for bottles which are to be frequently opened and closed, such as beer-bottles.
It consists in a stopper having projecting arms pivoted to the neck of the bottle by means of pins and elongated recesses, so as to allow the arms and the stopper a swinging motion, as well as a motionin the direction of the axis of the bottle, the stopper being forced upon the mouth of the bottle by means of a swinging bail.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 shows an elevation of myimproved bottle-stopper closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the closing-bail turned aside. Fig. 3 isavertical section. Fig. 4 is an elevation at rightangles to the positions of Figs. 1, 2, and 3, with the stopper and closing-bail turned away from the mouth of the bottle. Figs. 5 and 6 are elevations of a modiiication having a wire neck-band.

In the drawings, the letter A designates the neck of the bottle, and B is the stopper,which, by preference, is made of two partsnamely, the body a, made of hard rubber, metal, wood, or other suitable material, and the part I), made of soft rubber, cork, or other suitable material and of any desirable form.
0 c are two arms projecting from the stopper B diametrically opposite, and connected to the neck A of the bottle by means of endpins, d (I, entering elongated recesses e 6, so as to allow the arms and stopper aswinging motion, as well as a motion in the direction of the axis of the bottle.
The recesses e 6 may be formed in the material of the bottle, as shown in Figs. 1 to 4, or in the neck-band n, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the recesses in the latter case being formed by one or more loops, Z, of the neck-band n.
In the example illustrated in the drawings the two arms 0 c, with their pins (Z d, are made in one piece, consisting of a wire bent to the proper form, the central part, f, having a curved surface to form a cam for the closingbail, and having a depression, 9, in the center.
h is the closing-bail, pivoted to the neck of the bottle by means of pins 1' engaging recesses j, which latter may be formed in the material of the neck of the bottle, as indicated in Figs. 1 to 4, or in the neck-band n, as in Figs. 5 and 6. The closing-bail has projecting loops or cars k, which impart to it some elasticity and serve as a support for the fingers in opening and closing the stopper.
For closing the bottle, the stopper is turned against the mouth of the same and the closingbail is forced over the middle part of thestopper until it passes into the depression g,which retains it in position.
For opening the bottle, the closing-bail is forced aside, Fig. 2, and then the stopper is raised and turned aside, as seen in Fig. 4:.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the neck of a bottle and a stopper, of two diametrically-opposite arms projecting from the stopper, pins and elongated recesses connecting the arms to the neck of the bottle, a curved surface on the top of the stopper, and a closing-bail pivoted to the neck of the bottle and acting against said curved surface, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with the bottle, of the stopper B, wire 0 c f, end pins, (2, elongated recesses e, and closing-bail h, pivoted to the neck of the bottle, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination, with a bottle, of the stopper B, wire a c f, depression g, pins d d, elongated recesses e, the closing-bail h, pivoted to the neck of the bottle, and a neck-band, n, forming the recesses e e and j, substantially as shown and described.
