W. ORB.
(No Model.)
SEAL- 1.001;.
No. 529,945. ,P atented Nov. 27, 1894.
UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM ORB, or COLUMBUS, OHIO.
SEAL-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 529,945 dated November 27, 1894.
' Application filed June 5,1894. Serial No. 512,552. (No model.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ORB, of Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Seal-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in seal locks; and it consists in the particular construction and arrangement of parts which will be fully described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a seal lock for boxes, crates and other similar receptacles, consisting of a spring clasp attached to one part of the box, and a plate having an opening for the jaw of acompressing tool, the said clasp and plate having openings through which a soft metal plug is passed and the same by means of a suitable tool compressed into a head at the opposite side of the clasp and thus securing them permanently together, and making the impressof any desired mark upon either the inner and outer or both sides of the said headed plug, whereby the box cannot be opened without destroying the plug.
In the accompanying drawings:-Figure 1. represents a perspective view of my invention,'a portion of the box to which it is applied being shown in dotted lines. a similar view of a modification. Fig. 3. is a detached view of the plate shown in Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a detached view of the plate shown in Fig. 1.
In the drawings, A indicates the top or lid of the box, and B the side thereof. 7
In Fig. 1 the front edge of the top of the box is cut away as shown at a, and in the side of this cut away portion a is a recess 12 communicating therewith. Secured to .the said top A, within the cut away portion 0,, is a plate 0 which is doubled upon itself to be U-shaped in cross section, the upper portion of the doubled plate beingprovided with an opening D. Secured to the inner side of the side B of the box and extending upward Fig. 2. is'
therefrom, is a plate E, which has its upper end rounded as shown at e, and this plate is made of spring metal so that when the topis forced into position the upper bead or enlarged portion of the said plate E will spring outward over the edge of the opening D in the plate 0 thus holding the top of the box firmly in position. An opening (1 is made in the front end of the plate 0, and a corresponding opening is madein the springclasp E, which registers with the opening d, as clearly shown in the drawings.
In making a seal a headed rivet is passed through the registering openings of the plate and clasp, and by means of a pair of pinchers or equivalent instrument, which has one jaw passed through the opening b in the plate O, the said rivet is compressed and a head formed at both the outer and inner sides of the plate and clasp thus securing them together. If desired the jaws of this instrument may be provided with any letter or other character thus making a seal which will have to be destroyed before the box can be opened as will be readily understood.
In Fig. 2, I show a slight modificationof this construction, in which the plate 0 is of the same construction identically as that in Fig. 1, but the top of the box is not provided with a cut out portion a for the reason that in this instance the clasp or spring plate E is secured to the outer side of the boxinstead of its inner side, and the upper bead or enlarged portion of the said spring plate extends inward instead of outward and catches over the upper edge of the opening (1 in the plate G as will be clearly seen. A metal pin or rivet is fastened through the registering openingsof the plate and clasp the same as in Fig. 1 and compressed to form a head on its opposite end in the same manner thus forming a secure seal. 1
While I here show the clasp E as formed of a plate rigidly attached and forming a spring clasp, I do not limit myself to this construction for a hinge clasp may be used in its place, without departing from the spirit of my invention which consists in providing the plate with an opening through which the jaw of the compressing instrument passes, and the clasp and plate with registering openings to receive a rivet to be headed as a rivet passing through thesaid registering 20 before described. openings, substantially as described.
While I here show the plate 0 attached to 2. A seal lock comprising a plate doubled the top of the box, and the clasp attached to upon itself in cross section and secured to the body of the box, it will be readily underone member of the box, one doubled portion stood that this may be reversed by attaching of the said plate having an opening, a clasp 25 the plate to the side of the box and the clasp secured to another member of the box and to the top without departing from the spirit adapted to engage the edge of the said open of my invention or affecting in any manner ing in the plate, a clasp and plate having 10 its operation. registering openings, and a seal passing Having thus described my invention, what through the said registering openings, sub- 0 I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patstantially as described. ent, is-- In testimony whereof I atlix my signature in 1. A seal lock conlnlprising a plate secured presence or two witnesses. 15 to one member of t 0 box or similar receptaele, the said plate having an opening for WILLIAM the jaw of a compressing instrument, aclasp \Vitnesses: adapted to engage the said plate, the plate W. L. VAN SICKLE, and clasp having registering openings, and JOHN V. ORB.
