IMPROVEMENT IN TIES FOR COTTON-BALES.-

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 24,] I2, dated May 24, 1859.

To all whom it may concern) Be it known that I, EDWARD GARRETT, of the city of New Orleans, State of Louisiana, have made a new and useful Improvement in Ties of Iron Bands for Cotton-Bales; and I hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference ,being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, the same letters being used to designate the same parts shown in the respective figures.

Figure 1 is a side or top view. Fig. 2 is an edge View taken from line X in Fig. 1, which is sectional in part.

The ends of the band are marked A and B, and both pass through "the. mortise o in plate a. This plate has two mortises, marked, respectively, o and i. The end A is first passed through mortise 0, then through 6, as seen by Fig. 2, which makes the permanent fastening of end A to plate a. The changes to be made in the length of the band are effected through end B. Prior to this end being passed through mortise o the plate 0, having mortise s, is placed 1 on this end, and after the end has been passed through mortise o it is drawn back, which forms a hook, and again passed through morand again passed through mortise s, to make the tie, as has-been stated.

After this my description, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-

when made and arranged as or substantially as has been set forth, to form a tie for iron bands for baling cotton or forsirnilar purposes.
