Description
V W. BOYD. IRON TIE FOR COTTON BALBS Patented-Aug. 30, 185-9.
UNITED STATES IVILLIAM BOYD, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
IMPROVEMENT IN IRON TIES FOR COTTON-BALES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 25.240, dated August 30, 1859.
T0 aZl whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, \VM. BOYD, of the city of New Orleans, parish of Orleans, State of Louisiana, have made a new and useful Iniprovement in Iron Ties for Cotton-Bales; and I hereby declare the following is a full, clear,
' and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification, the same letters designating the same parts shown in the different figures- Figures 1 and 2 showing the sides of the band; Fig. 3, the edge of the band; Fig. 4, the key, marked a.
In the application of iron ties for cottonbales one important consideration to be taken is the character of the tie, allowing the bales to be stowed on shipboard apart from their uses otherwise. As the bales are forced into their places by the use of screws, any prominent partas a band or a buckle or button, when made use of to form the connectionis liable to catch 011 the bales adjoining and cause the tieto be either injured or broken, this tie being made by a split in the ends of the band, dividing the same into three parts, (marked 1' for the two sides and It" for the centers,) the machine making the splits, forming 1 and 1, to allow the key to pass between them to formthe connection, the key having wings on each end. which will pass through readily; but the elasticity of the cotton draws the band, as seen in Fig. 3, bringing the wings of the key on the side of the slits, so it cannot come out, and the partsi and z" forming a smooth surface at the tie to allow the bale to be forced into place by stowing on shipboard without catching the adj oining bales. as set forth, from other devices.
I do not assume to claim the splitting of the parts to be joined and the use of a key passing between the parts so separated, as I am aware this is of common usage.
After this my description, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
In combination with the splits, the use of a key having wings at each end to form the lock to the tie, when made and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
\VM. BOYD.
\Vituesses:
' FRANCIS ARMSTRONG,
JOHN EARLS.
